Happy Summer! Events and Book Clubs Coming Up At Main Street Reads!

So much to report on this week after a busy couple of weeks attending Book Expo America in NYC and placing LOTS of new orders! Read on for info on upcoming event AND our new writers and reading groups!

Before we move on to all the exciting news, a big shout-out to Benjamin Gamble, pictured above, for his fabulous launch signing this past Saturday. There are still signed copies of “Dragons Suck” available at the store. Dozens of guests enjoyed the morning while we served up plenty of junk food (chips and candy bars) in keeping with the lighthearted theme… Thanks, Benjamin – dragons may suck but you rock!

This Saturday – Invoke Your Inner Mermaid!

Our first ever poetry reading and signing will feature Jackie Morfesis and her newly released Mermaid Crossing: Mythic Poetry.

Fresh off a performance at Piccolo Spoleto, Jackie Morfesis is an author, artist, and advocate. Mermaid Crossing speaks to her mythic journey through the eyes of a mermaid, filled with love, betrayal, transformation, and healing. Jackie is dedicated to the creative process as a vehicle for healing and community empowerment.

Mermaid Crossing is a deep dive into a mythic world filled with adventure, and takes readers on a journey that speaks to their soul.

Jackie will be with us from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will do a reading at 11, followed by open discussion – don’t miss this very special event!

Third Thursday Thrillers!

Get ready for a Thriller Third Thursday! Authors Sean Keefer (a Charleston attorney who writes the Noah Parks legal thriller series: The Solicitor and The Trust), and Lawrence Thackston (Orangeburg writer of mystery-thrillers The Devil’s Courthouse, Tidal Pools and Carolina Cruel), will be at Main Street Reads for Third Thursday this month.

Both authors’ titles will be available for purchase and to be signed personally by the authors. A perfect opportunity to grab those last-minute Father’s Day gifts!

Keeping it cool as always will be guitarist/singer/songwriter Michael Kaltofen, so come on out and enjoy Summerville’s monthly blockbuster block party… we look forward to you dropping in, June 20, 5-8 p.m.

Book Clubs Meet This Month!

Based on your feedback (and thank you for that!) we’re going to establish the following book clubs at Main Street Reads:

Pulpwood Queens Book Club: You’ll be part of the national chain of over 800 clubs, with plenty of amazing reads to choose from! (Hint: For upcoming selections, CLICK HERE!) Our first selection will be The Glovemaker by Ann Weisgarber. The club will meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. unless club members would like to choose a date more to the liking of the majority! This month that’s Tuesday, June 25th. If you’d like to order a copy of the official read for the club sale price of 19.99 (20% off), email us [email protected]!

Thrill in the ‘Ville: For mystery and thriller readers, we’ll meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, and we’re inviting you to weigh in this upcoming Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with your choices of books for the next several months. We’ll have suggestions if you like but this will be an open group and so the choosing will be up to you!

Living Large: To celebrate best-selling authors, especially those from the lowcountry, we’ll choose books by famed authors including Mary Alice Monroe, Dorothea Benton Frank, JC Sasser, Nicole Seitz, Pat Conroy and more! It’ll be a mix of genres, but always featuring a prominent author. The LL club will meet on the 4th Thursday of each month, which means the first meeting will take place Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. The first selection will be The Summer I Met Jack by Michelle Gable. We have both the hardcover and paperback editions in stock, discounted of course! (Hardcover normally $27.99 on sale for $23.99 and paperback normally $17.99 on sale for $14.99)

Still in the making: Waiting to hear interest from YOU for a Young Adult “Y’All” book club, a “Cook the Book” Cookbook club, and a “Reality Bites” Non-Fiction club.

Main Street Writes

For the inner writer in all of us, we’re setting up a Monday evening writers group. Come on out this Monday at 6:30 p.m. and bring a few pages with you to share with friends. Once we get a sense of your interests we’ll likely splinter off groups into fiction/non-fiction and discuss bringing in some special guests for afternoon/evening workshops!
