It’s Getting Spooktacular in S’ville!

Ahh… no better indicators of fall and the Spooktacular season in Summerville than the annual installation of the Scarecrows on the Square on Hutchinson Square, right across from the bookstore.

We love seeing the community out and about and enjoying all the displays put up by local businesses. Bonus: The weather has also been wonderfully cool and “fall-like” – which seems to put a spring in everyone’s step.

So without further ado, here’s what we’re loving in Summerville this week, and a lineup of the week ahead… we’ll see you on Main Street!

WHAT WE’RE LOVING NOW:

SHARI: Well obviously the weather and the scarecrows on the square. It’s a reminder to get those fireplaces going for cooler days ahead. And inside the store we’ve had so much fun decorating. Look for lots of Hogwarts-esque floating candles and trails of spiders and bats…

The book I’m enjoying at the moment is this week’s Books & Banter pick, Five Star Stranger by Kat Tang. I love when an author breaks through with a strong debut novel. Already looking forward to more from this wordsmith.

KRISTY: Anathema by Keri is the perfect Halloween read! It’s a gothic dark fantasy romance with elements of horror. Keri Lake’s writing is always immersive and vivid, but she really flexed her creative mind with this fantastical and disturbing world. This book offers up unique languages, lore, bloodlines, creatures and a fascinating magic system. So many scenes gave me actual, hair-raising, CHILLS. The plot itself is enthralling with incredible characters and a swoon-worthy slow burn. I could not get enough!

Things I’m loving in Summerville include decorating for Halloween and seeing all of the Halloween decor in my neighborhood and around town.

KELLEY: Ah – The Stone Witch of Florence… I’m about halfway through this historical fiction set during the plague in 1300s Italy. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the time period with just a hint of fantasy, by way of magic gemstones. I’m loving both the lyrical prose and the strong female protagonist.

Around town, this is my favorite season, for the weather and the fun fall activities. I recently went to my favorite pumpkin patch, West Farm. They have moved to an even bigger and nicer location this year. The tractor ride and the corn maze are my fall must-dos!
