Summerville Strong!

Spring sunshine and spring rain this past week had us all grateful to live in Summerville, even when we’re still mostly living out of our homes. Our readers have been able to enjoy more time reading on the porch and enjoying the breeze.

On Thursday, I was contacted by a reporter from the Wall Street Journal, who’s interviewing businesses in SC about their various opening rules and policies. And I have to tell you, I was so proud to brag on our close-knit community and to tell the world how you’ve all been supporting local businesses, even while staying safe and respectful of your neighbors. Just saying it out loud to a journalist reminded me yet again how lucky we are to be Summerville Strong.

To further illustrate that, the day after we ran the post about our in-store rules for social distancing and safe shopping, I received a call from a neighboring business, offering us gloves (since I’d mentioned ours hadn’t arrived yet). I’m happy to report our glove order arrived yesterday, but what an incredibly kind and selfless gesture (thank you, Joyce!).

Onto the news: Our past week’s virtual events included a delightful talk from author Lee Smith and another with the remarkable Ruthie Lindsey (a lesson in a positive attitude if ever there was one!) We see several readers taking advantage of our sneak peek chapters and parent resources on our “Free Stuff” page (we have another free offer below). And, we have THREE events scheduled this week! Read about them below…

Have an idea for an event or a free resource we need to be including? Let us know! ‘Til we meet again, keep calm and read on!

MORE Free Stuff!

Adding to our page of Free Stuff for Kids AND Adult Readers, I received this email from a friend and publishing influencer, Miral Sattar:

I grew up loving classic fairy tales and when my kids were old enough to appreciate them, they were the first stories I turned to. But reading these tales of passive princesses, damsels in distress and torturous witches made me realize how woefully out of sync they were with modern times. So I decided to rewrite and update them and turn them in audio stories.

Bearily Bear Audio Stories feature diverse and confident characters and a lot less violence. These reimagined childhood classics include A Story of a Smart Princess and a Certain Pea, Gretel and Hansel, A Girl Named Rapunzel and more.

I’m giving away the stories for FREE so that children around the world can enjoy and learn from the reimagined fairy tales.” LEARN MORE HERE!
