Still to Come in May: Book Clubs, Third Thursday and Memorial Day Festivities

Halfway through May and we’ve still got clubs galore this month, plus this week’s festive Third Thursday Art & Garden Stroll, and Memorial Day…

But before we get to all that’s coming up, a brief climb up on the soap box to share some facts and figures about book bans…

The Freedom to Read Matters

We’ve always believed bookstores are about more than simply selling books. Thanks to you, they’re about ideas. Curiosity. Community. Conversation. Discovery. Sometimes even disagreement. But most importantly? Choice.

That’s why recent conversations surrounding book bans and challenges matter.

According to PEN America’s “Facts & Fiction” report, thousands of books continue to face removal efforts across schools and libraries nationwide. Whether you agree with a particular book or not, the freedom to read — and to decide for yourself what stories matter — remains one of the cornerstones of both literacy and democracy.

We believe readers deserve access to a wide range of voices and viewpoints. We believe parents should guide their own children’s reading choices. We believe stories create empathy. And we believe conversations about books are always better than silence.

So as we head into another busy week, we’re grateful for a community of readers who continue to show up, support local, attend book clubs, bring the kids to storytime, and celebrate the simple joy of reading together.

And speaking of showing up… strap in for a LOT happening at the store over the next week and beyond…

As we head into Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our country. Originally established following the Civil War, the holiday remains a reminder of sacrifice, service, and gratitude. We’re open and featuring 10% off if your purchase includes history/historical fiction, memoirs or biography

Tuesday, May 26

Books & Banter Fiction Book Club

Our general fiction club returns with The Last Letters of Sarah and Walter — another conversation-worthy read paired, of course, with good company, snacks, and great discussion.

As always, thank you for continuing to make Main Street Reads one of the happiest little gathering spots in Summerville. Every time you shop local, attend an event, join a club, or bring a young reader through our doors, you help keep stories — and community — alive.

See you on Main Street!
