Christmas Around the World: Let’s “Take a Page” from Iceland!
Ever wished for a holiday dedicated to gifting books? Iceland has had this covered for 80 years and we think it’s time we all get on board! Jólabókaflóð, pronounced “Yo-la-bok-a-flot,” is the Icelandic tradition of gifting books on December 24 (and then curling up with hot chocolate to read!) is every reader’s dream come true…
During World War II, Iceland faced shortages like the rest of the world, but paper wasn’t rationed, making books one of the few accessible gifts. The Icelandic people, who had recently gained independence from Denmark, leaned into this, gifting books and creating a treasured national tradition. The result? A country of passionate bookworms and an annual book-giving fest.
Since 1944, the Icelandic book trade has mailed a catalog to every household in November, just in time for the Reykjavík Book Fair. Families flip through the catalog, pick out books, and gift them to friends and family on December 24. After opening their gifts, everyone grabs a mug of hot chocolate, gets cozy, and dives into their new reads!
Now’s the perfect time to bring this tradition to your home. We can help with the book selections and we can pair that with hot chocolate and a scented candle to bring the warmth of the holiday season home with you!
And now, a closer look at this week’s festivities as we look forward to seeing you on Main Street!
TODAY at Main Street Reads:
Join us during Summerville’s Christmas Stroll for an inspiring afternoon at Main Street Reads as Dennis and Karen Vinar sign their heartfelt memoir, How Did You Find Me…After All These Years? A Family Memoir.
This remarkable story follows two teenagers in love who, after facing an unexpected pregnancy, place their child for adoption and part ways. Decades later, after 53 years apart, they reunite and rediscover each other—and their daughter.
More than a love story, this memoir is a moving testament to resilience, love, and the effects of pivotal life decisions. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the authors and hear their incredible journey.
