Banned books? Is that still a thing? You bet your books it is. All across the nation, booksellers and libraries will be recognizing banned books this week, September 22-28. We have over 150 banned book titles in stock, decorating our front table and adjacent shelves (look for the yellow caution tape!)
To encourage you to pick up a banned book (or two) we’re offering a Book Buck for each banned book sold. You can use the buck towards your purchase or save it for your next visit! We also have a limited supply of free bookmarks and “I Read Banned Books” stickers available to you to share your love of all books with your tribes.
Why are books banned? We’ve been looking them up all weekend as readers ask, “What?! Why is Dr. Seuss’s Hop on Pop banned?” (for encouraging violence against parents. Other reasons: LGBTQ themes (like a same sex couple in Captain Underpants); sex (Fifty Shades of Grey); language (To Kill a Mockingbird; pro-communism (George Orwell’s 1984); and even “a disrespectful attitude” (Junie P. Jones series).

On the Sweet Tea Trail!
Read every banned book on our shelves? No worries – there’s another way for you to earn a book buck and that’s with a purchase of one of our “Sweet Tea” book offerings. As home of the birthplace of Sweet Tea and Summerville’s new Sweet Tea Trail, we have a shelf now dedicated to books with “Sweet Tea” in the title. You can also pick up your Trail Guide from the Chamber building or any of the participating shops in town and get stamped for purchases. Stamped trail guides earn you cool swag when you take your guide to the chamber building.
