This book is the first of a series related to the men of the H.L. Hunley Submarine, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship. In this book it covers the life story of Horace Lawson Hunley, and the first people in his life that made a difference in his plan to build a submarine.

Some of them are as follows: His friend Robert Ruffin Barrow who helped finance the submarine. Hunley’s friend and co-worker Francis Hanson Hatch. The first commander John Scott of his fishboat submarines Pioneer. Others have written of the submarine.

This series is about the men involved in making the sub a reality, whether by financing, building, designing, seeking, advising, approving, writing letters, or diary entries. Each book in the series includes crew members of the submarine and all of those who had a hand in making the H.L. Hunley become a reality.
