New Book Probes Charleston History Through Its Religious Burial Grounds – Holy City’s Grand Graveyards Celebrated in Full Color, Large Format 228-page Book

In a new large format full color book, Charleston’s rich, complex and interesting history is examined through the prism of its church and synagogue graveyards and cemeteries. Author Patrick Harwood announces the release of “Stories from the Underground: The Churchyards of Charleston”.

Thirteen downtown Charleston churches and one synagogue are the book’s primary focus. “The unique level of religious freedom allowed by the British in early Carolina attracted people representing a wide range of faiths,” says Harwood, a communication professor at South Carolina State University (and before that College of Charleston).

Patrick Harwood has written six books. His other titles include “In the Arms of Angels: Magnolia Cemetery- Charleston’s Treasure of Mystery, History and Artistry,” “The Birds of Magnolia Cemetery: Charleston’s Secret Bird Sanctuary,” and “Nature-ly Fun! Bird Photography from A to Z.”

A longtime Dorchester County resident, Harwood teaches communication courses at South Carolina State University.
