SUMMARY:Meet the Authors: Bill and Ann Stevens with "Dalton and Grace"
DESCRIPTION:Our first LIVE event of 2022 will be a Meet the Author with Daniel Island News columnists Bill and Ann Stevens\, authors of the recently released (and hilarious) Dalton and Grace. Bill and Ann live in Daniel Island. They enjoy reading\, writing\, travel\, giving back to their community\, and spending time with their four children and ten grandchildren. \n\nABOUT DALTON AND GRACE \n\n\nBless Their Little Hearts…Marriage is a compilation of laughter\, tears\, and occasional inane spats over nothing. Life in the south is a combination of sass\, sophistication\, and sticky situations. When you mix these together\, the result is gut-splitting hysterical. \nIn these Southern short stories\, the whimsical Williams couple takes readers on the highs and lows of their Southern marriage. \nDalton Williams\, a well-meaning and kind-hearted gentleman\, has ideas that are quirky and kooky—many times going awry. His practical and sensible wife\, Grace\, keeps him grounded.  Embark upon a fun-filled and hilarious journey through the aisles of Publix supermarket to the frustration of Daylight Saving Time. Dalton and Grace are familiar faces experiencing life’s oftentimes silly mundanity\, and when you add in their adorable and sassy Aunt Toogie\, you have a real southern treat! \nWant to try a special treat from the book? \nGRACE’S CRANBERRY MARGARITAS\nINGREDIENTS               \n\n1 ½ Cups (6 oz.) fresh or frozen cranberries\, rinsed\n¾ Cup lime juice (preferably fresh squeezed)\n1 Cup cranberry juice cocktail\n¾ Cup Tequila\n½ Cup Triple Sec or Grand Marnier\n½ Cup sugar\nIce cubes (around 2-3 cups)\nLime wedges\n\n\nPREPARING THE GLASSES \n\nPour some sugar (not the ½ cup above) into a saucer.\nWet the Margarita (or other wide-mouth) glass rim with lime or cranberry juice.\nDip into the  Sugar to coat the rim.\n\n\nMAKING THE MARGARITAS              \n\nPut the ingredients (except the lime wedges) into a blender.\nPut the ice 01+ Cubes in last so as to fill up the blender.\nTurn on a high speed\, such as “Liquefy.”\nWhen the ice and berries are pulverized\, serve.\nGarnish the glass with a lime wedge.\nENJOY!

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Diane Chamberlain's The Last House on the Street
DESCRIPTION:Our first Reader Meet Writer event of 2022. Register to attend HERE! Diane Chamberlain was 14 in the summer of 1964\, when she learned about three young civil rights workers who were murdered in Mississippi\, at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan\, while volunteering to work on voter registration\, education\, and civil rights. It was an event that had a profound impact on Chamberlain\, and led to her interest in the 1965 SCOPE project\, in which white college students\, primarily from the North\, traveled to the South to help register Black voters. That project is what inspired and informed her unmissable and timely new book\, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE STREET\, in which the fight for voting rights provides the backdrop for the story of one young woman’s passion to do what she knows in her heart is right. \n1965: Growing up in the well-to-do town of Round Hill\, North Carolina\, Ellie Hockley was raised to be a certain type of proper Southern lady. Enrolled in college and all but engaged to a bank manager\, Ellie isn’t as committed to her expected future as her family believes. She’s chosen to spend her summer break as a volunteer helping to register Black voters. But as Ellie follows her ideals fighting for the civil rights of the marginalized\, her scandalized parents scorn her efforts\, and her neighbors reveal their prejudices. And when she finds herself falling for a fellow volunteer\, Ellie discovers the frightening true nature of the people living in Round Hill. \n2010: Architect Kayla Carter and her husband designed a beautiful house for themselves in Round Hill’s new development\, Shadow Ridge Estates. It was supposed to be a home where they could raise their three-year-old daughter and grow old together. Instead\, it’s the place where Kayla’s husband died in a tragic accident\, and vandals leave threatening notes. And Kayla’s neighbor Ellie Hockley is harboring secrets about the dark history of the land where her house was built. \nThis is the sixth book by Diane Chamberlain that I’ve had the pleasure to work on\, and I can honestly say that it is by far the best. Early readers seem to agree. As I write this letter\, the book has a 4.5 star average on Goodreads\, with over 375 ratings\, and over 275 reviews. I urge you to read it and review it this January.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Unexplained South Carolina by Sherman Carmichael
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to bring you a special book signing to celebrate the launch of a new book about South Carolina! Sherman Carmichael will be LIVE at Main Street Reads on January 22nd to unveil the brand new release of Unexplained South Carolina. The Palmetto State is home to many strange and unexplained events. The Gray Man of 2018 is Pawleys Island’s most historic ghost. He has been seen walking the beaches before hurricanes. The tiny town of Hilda hears the mournful wail of a ghost train. The Bowery\, Myrtle Beach’s most legendary bar\, hosts the spectral singing of Barman Joe. A ninety-two-foot crop circle appeared in the small town of McBee in 1994. And there’s a host of Bigfoot sightings in the state. Sherman Carmichael delves into the mysterious side of South Carolina. \nSherman Carmichael\, a native of Hemingway\, South Carolina\, has been dabbling into things that are best left alone—like ghosts\, UFOs\, monsters and other strange and unusual things—since he was seventeen. He has seen\, heard and felt things that defy explanation. Carmichael’s previous books—Forgotten Tales of South Carolina\, Legends and Lore of South Carolina\, Eerie South Carolina\, UFOs Over South Carolina\, Strange South Carolina\, Mysterious Tales of Coastal North Carolina\, Mysterious South Carolina  and  Mysterious Tales of the North Carolina Piedmont—center on ghosts and the strange and unusual as well as hovering objects and strange lights in the sky. \nHe has traveled throughout the United States visiting haunted locations. He has also visited Roswell\, New Mexico. He has traveled to Mexico and Central America researching Mayan ruins. He plans to continue visiting these unusual places for many years to come.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Buccaneer's Spit: A Race for the Treasure by JE Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Join us January 29th for the perfect new middle grade mystery by Charleston’s own J.E. Thompson. You’ll have the opportunity to meet the author AND grab signed copies of Buccaneer’s Spit: A Race for the Treasure.\n \nIn this middle-grade mystery\, twelve-year-old Callie’s parents send her to South Carolina alone for a spring break visit with her grandfather. Joined by a rambunctious Jack Russell Terrier and a friend with a secret of his own\, she’s set on revealing what the adults in her life are keeping from her. This STEM focused coming-of-age story features a girl/boy dynamic with a bit of pirate mystery and ecological danger thrown in. The adventure includes a prominent secondary character with dyslexia and is set in OpenDyslexic typeface. Perfect for high-low or reluctant readers and fans of The Goonies! \nBorn in Toledo\, Ohio\, John Thompson attended Berkshire School and Middlebury College. After a successful 25 years on Wall Street\, he switched gears and turned to his ultimate love\, writing. His first novel\, Armageddon Conspiracy\, was a finalist for Best Fiction by the Southern Independent Booksellers and won the Independent Publishers Gold Medal for Best Thriller.  \nAfter several more adult thrillers\, he turned to writing for young readers. The Girl From Felony Bay\, his first Middle Grade novel\, was selected Best Children’s Book by the Southern Independent Booksellers\, became a Junior Library Guild selection\, and was a finalist for the following awards: the Black-Eyed Susan Award\, South Carolina Book Award\, the William Allen White Award and the Maine State Student Book Award. The sequel\, Disappearance At Hangman’s Bluff\, was also a Junior Library Guild selection. \nHis most recent Middle Grade\, Buccaneer’s Spit: A Race For The Treasure is the very exciting tale of two young people struggling to save a beautiful and pristine spit of land from an unscrupulous developer. The book is filled with information about the environment and conservation\, sea turtles\, porpoises\, alligators\, family issues . . . and\, oh yeah\, pirate treasure. Because one of the characters suffers from dyslexia\, the book has been printed in OpenDyslexic typeface to make it a story all readers can enjoy. \nSince moving to Charleston in 1996\, in addition to writing he has worked for his local community and served on a number of boards including: National Advisory Board of Donors Choose\, The MUSC Children’s Hospital\, MUSC Foundation\, Charleston Collegiate School\, Ashley Hall School\, Reading Partners and The Coastal Conservation League. He divides his time between Charleston\, SC and Blooming Grove\, PA and lives with his wife\, Julia Forster and his rescue Pitbull\, Annabelle.
