SUMMARY:Booksigning: Rebecca Dwight Bruff's Trouble the Water
DESCRIPTION:Join us between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, November 24th when Rebecca Dwight Bruff will be signing American Fiction award-winning Trouble the Water. Stick around for a discussion of the book afterwards as the featured Pulpwood Queen book club read this month! \n\nDeeply moving and illuminating\, TROUBLE THE WATER reveals the little-known real-life story of Robert Smalls. Born enslaved before the Civil War\, Smalls witnesses great privilege and immense suffering alongside his owner’s daughter and the dangerous son of a firebrand secessionist. \nAt the age of twelve\, he’s sent to work in Charleston\, where he loads ships and learns to pilot a cotton steamer. When the war erupts and his cotton steamer becomes a confederate warship\, Robert attempts a harrowing escape to freedom for himself and the people he loves. \n\n\n“With this stunning debut novel\, Rebecca Bruff establishes herself as an exciting new voice in historical fiction.” – Cassandra King Conroy \n\nRebecca Bruff heard the story of Robert Smalls on her first visit to South Carolina. She was so captivated that she left her job and moved across the country to research and write this novel. Bruff earned her Bachelors degree in education (Texas A&M) and Master and Doctorate degrees in theology (Southern Methodist University). In 2017\, she was a scholarship recipient for the prestigious Key West Literary Seminar. She volunteers at the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort\, South Carolina. She’s published non-fiction\, plays a little tennis\, travels when she can\, and loves life in the lowcountry with her husband and an exuberant golden retriever. Learn more at rebeccabruff.com

SUMMARY:Living Large Bookclub: November Pick - Caste
DESCRIPTION:Join us November 17th live or via Zoom (details below) when our “Living Large” book club discusses the best-selling book Caste. \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER – OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK – The Pulitzer Prize-winning\, bestselling author of The Warmth of Other Suns examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions. \nLONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD – “An instant American classic.”–Dwight Garner\, The New York Times \n“As we go about our daily lives\, caste is the wordless usher in a darkened theater\, flashlight cast down in the aisles\, guiding us to our assigned seats for a performance. The hierarchy of caste is not about feelings or morality. It is about power–which groups have it and which do not.” \nIn this brilliant book\, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores\, through an immersive\, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people\, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system\, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. \nBeyond race\, class\, or other factors\, there is a powerful caste system that influences people. \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84550929622?pwd=YW15MjdxY2JkZTFEUFlzZEJZZ3NYdz09 \nMeeting ID: 845 5092 9622\nPasscode: 111720

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Joe Palmer with A Mariner's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, November 8th\, from noon ’til 2 pm for a very special signing with Joe Palmer\, hot on the heels of his feature appearance at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in Beaufort on Saturday! \nWe’ll have refreshments and Joe will chat about his amazing novel. Copies will be on sale at the book club price (10% off) and can be personalized by the author for yourself or the perfect holiday gift. Here’s what other amazing authors are saying about this rich and rewarding tale: \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a stunning debut: a seafaring novel rich with lush imagery and colorful characters from an exciting new voice in Southern fiction. With deft narrative skill\, the author takes the protagonist\, a cynical middle-aged mariner\, and his protege\, a troubled young man\, on a voyage of self-discovery that begins on an island in Florida and ends in an Irish fishing village. You don’t want to miss this beautifully crafted page-turner!” \n– Cassandra King\, bestselling author of Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy \n“Hard-edged and gripping.  An intriguing mix of hope and fear.  Fans of Pat Conroy’s evocative novels are going to love this stirring debut.” \n– Steve Berry\, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Protocol \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a richly rendered story scented with sea spray and filled with salty characters seeking grace\, mercy and second chances. Palmer writes with heart and authenticity\, bringing to life an unfortgettable crew worthy of the love and redemption we each hope to find in this life.” – \nNicole Seitz\, author of The Cage-Maker \n“A beautifully drawn sea-faring tale built around a marina full of lovingly flawed characters who have\, in different ways\, been floundered by life; who in rescuing each other\, manage to rescue themselves. Set in the lush beauty of the inlets\, streams and maritime world of North Florida\, A Mariner’s Tale is told with great heart and uncommon compassion by an author who knows the life of tide and salt and of the sea.” \nJanis Owen\, author of American Ghost \nPart nautical yarn\, part romance\, and part coming-of-age story\, A Mariner’s Tale is a page-turner\, but Joe Palmer’s beautiful prose slows the pace to a perfect rhythm\, allowing the reader to participate in the wonders of nature and the resilience of the human heart on a barrier island just off the northeast coast of Florida. \n—Susan Cushman\, author of Friends of the Library and Cherry Bomb\, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Josie Olsvig Debuts Gullah Tears
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us Saturday afternoon\, November 7th\, to celebrate the debut of a lowcountry historical novel and book signing with the author\, Josie Olsvig! \nGullah Tears: In the Deep South of antebellum Charleston\, enslaved Gullah woman Hentie survives the day-to-day sufferings brought on by the white planter society that controls the institution of slavery. From Hentie’s abduction and confinement on a slaver ship\, we follow her journey of pain and despair as she begins her new life in a land that causes her much heartache and oppression. Her circumstances are buoyed by the warmth\, love\, and support of her fellow enslaved workers\, who lift her up and encourage her to continue on. \nJosie Olsvig is a new Southern author who lives outside Charleston. A former attorney\, Josie spent her career addressing child abuse\, domestic violence\, and sexual assault. Her call to service was spurred by growing up in poverty in the inner city\, experiencing hardship\, strife\, and violence. Josie worked for nearly thirty years as a public servant and advocate. In the twilight of her career\, Josie served on a statewide committee to combat human trafficking in her home state of Ohio. \nAfter moving to the South\, she became deeply interested in the Gullah culture and race-based slavery. Leveraging her legal research skills\, she interviewed Gullah slave descendants\, conducted site visits\, and researched archival records. Her first book\, Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry\, is a children’s picture book about the Gullah culture\, heirs’ property\, and the history of Charleston. Gullah Tears is Josie’s debut historical fiction novel\, the first in a series.

SUMMARY:Stories on the Square: Celebrating Differences on a Spectacular Saturday
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, November 7 (10:30 a.m. – Noon)\, we’ll be hosting TWO great children’s books and authors for a Spectacular Stories on the Square and Book Signing! \nJoining us will be Chris Singleton\, inspirational speaker and author of Different and Marybeth Wishart\, former teacher and author of Parker the Purple Penguin. The books will be read aloud and families can purchase copies from us\, personally signed by the authors. Both books carry excellent messages of inclusivity\, are beautifully and vibrantly illustrated\, and (ahem) make perfect holiday gifts! \nAND… our own amazing storytime reader Colleen Ratkleff will be here\, too! \nMeet Chris Singleton\nChris Singleton is a former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization as well as an inspirational speaker who has traveled the country passionately speaking to over 60\,000 students. Chris has also spread his message through various different media outlets and has been featured on ESPN’s E:60\, Sports Illustrated magazine\, CNN\, and USA Today. \nHis mother\, Sharonda Coleman Singleton\, was murdered along with eight other victims at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston\, South Carolina on June 17th 2015 by a white male who wanted to start a race-related war in the United States. Chris inspired his city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.” \nChri’s children’s book teaches kids not only to accept\, but to celebrate\, people who are different from them. Different: A Story About Loving Your Neighbor tells the story of Obinna\, a boy who moves from Nigeria to Charleston\, and finds that he doesn’t look\, sound\, or dress like his classmates. Singleton’s mother\, Sharonda\, makes an appearance in the book as Obinna’s teacher\, who reminds him that he is “beautifully and wonderfully made.” It’s a thoughtful tribute to the woman who first taught Singleton about love’s healing power. \nMeet Marybeth Wishart\nMarybeth Wishart is a retired special education teacher who has taught at both the elementary and high school level for over thirty-four years. She is a Connecticut native now living in South Carolina and trying as many new things as possible\, including publishing her first children’s book. \nParker the Purple Penguin is a story she told her own children on their way to school over thirty years ago. Its messages are as relevant now as they were then\, and birthed from the beautiful differences of her classroom kids. Marybeth would love to publish more of her children’s stories and to use Parker the Purple Penguin to support anti-bullying\, diversity\, and children’s literacy programs. \nParker the Purple Penguin doesn’t get why he is ignored and ostracized by his fellow penguins. Why don’t they like him\, when they have so many things in common? Why is he ignored by all of the other penguins just because of his purple coloring? Is there anything Parker can do to try to fit in? \nFollow Parker’s story as he confronts his differences\, and see how the other penguins change their behavior as Parker tries hard to blend in with the crowd. Parker’s tale is a journey of self-discovery as he learns to accept himself in the midst of bullying and peer pressure. \n(Hint: Fans of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will love this book!)

Legends of sunken ships\, quarantined drifters\, wartime burial grounds\, and lost Indian tribes have nicknamed the town “Coffin Island.” However\, much of the folklore has been entombed by colorful beach shops\, greasy crab shacks and bustling sunbathers. That is\, until the summer of 2019 when young fossil hunter\, Teal McHone\, becomes the last person to lay eyes on a child snatched from the shoreline on a hot July evening. Suddenly the small beach town once again lives up to its dark reputation\, and the kidnapping ignites a chain of sinister events along the South Carolina coast. Will Teal realize just what she saw in time to save the girl? \nThis coming-of-age\, romantic thriller will keep the pages turning as Teal fights to unearth all that’s hidden beneath the sands and souls on this tiny southern beach. The pull of the ocean tempers the pace of her awakening and the fates of all those caught up in its enigmatic motion. Will the strengthening tide pull the lost further out to sea or finally deliver them safely back to shore? \nMeet the Author\nLorna Hollifield was born in Asheville\, North Carolina\, but now enjoys the “salt life” outside of Charleston\, South Carolina with her family and favorite Springer Spaniel. \nHollifield began her professional writing journey as a tourism and travel blogger before finally breaking into the fiction market when Pen Name Publishing picked up her debut novel\, Tobacco Sun\, in 2017.  Since then Lorna served as President for the South Carolina Writers Association\, has been a featured speaker at numerous literary conferences\, was published in the Fall Lines literary anthology\, and spent a year as the book columnist for Skirt Magazine. \nWhen Lorna isn’t writing\, she is most likely bumming on the beach\, or exploring the never-ending South Carolina LowCountry she loves so much. Her first novel was Tobacco Sun.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Better Boys\, Better Men with Andrew Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Zoom discussion on Thursday\, October 15 from 7-8 pm! Email mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your event link and password: \nIn Better Boys\, Better Men\, cultural critic and New York Times contributor Andrew Reiner argues that men today are working on an outdated model of masculinity\, which prevents them in moments of distress and vulnerability from marshalling the courage\, strength\, and resiliency—the very characteristics we regularly champion in men—they need to thrive in a world vastly different from the ones their fathers and grandfathers grew up in. According to Reiner\, this outdated model of manhood can have devastating effects on the entire culture and\, especially boys and men\, from falling behind in the classroom and rising male unemployment rates to increased levels of depression and disturbing upticks in violence on a mass scale. \nReiner interviews boys and men of all ages\, educators\, counselors\, therapists\, and physicians throughout the United States to better understand what factors are preventing the country’s boys and men from developing the emotional resiliency they need. He also introduces readers to the boys and men at the vanguard of a new masculinity that empowers them to find and express the full range of their humanity. Urgent and necessary\, Better Boys\, Better Men will change the way we talk about boys and men in America today. \nAndrew Reiner is a professor at Towson University\, where he offers the seminar “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He has written on masculinity and men’s issues for the New York Times\, the Washington Post Magazine\, and Italy’s la Republica . His work has been featured on NPR\, the Canadian Broadcasting Company\, and in Men’s Health\, Forbes\, and The Guardian. He speaks about masculinity regularly at schools and conferences around the world.\n \n

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Confessions on the 7:45 with Lisa Unger (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Come join us via Zoom (email for link and password) on Thursday October 1 at 7 pm for a discussion with author Lisa Unger about CONFESSIONS ON THE 7:45! \nSelena Murphy is commuting home from her job in the city when the train stalls out on the tracks. She strikes up a conversation with a beautiful stranger in the next seat\, and their connection is fast and easy. The woman introduces herself as Martha and confesses that she’s been stuck in an affair with her boss. Selena\, in turn\, confesses that she suspects her husband is sleeping with the nanny. When the train arrives at Selena’s station\, the two women part ways\, presumably never to meet again. But days later\, Selena’s nanny disappears. Soon Selena finds her once-perfect life upended. As she is pulled into the mystery of the missing nanny\, and as the fractures in her marriage grow deeper\, Selena begins to wonder\, who was Martha really? But she is hardly prepared for what she’ll discover. Expertly plotted and reminiscent of the timeless classic Strangers on a Train\, Confessions on the 7:45 is a stunning web of lies and deceit\, and a gripping thriller about the delicate facades we create around our lives. \nLisa Unger is the New York Times and internationally bestselling author of eighteen novels\, including Confessions on the 7:45. With millions of readers worldwide and books published in twenty-six languages\, Unger is widely regarded as a master of suspense. Her critically acclaimed books have been voted “Best of the Year” or top picks by the Today show\, Good Morning America\, Entertainment Weekly\, Amazon\, IndieBound and others. Her essays have appeared in The New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, NPR\, and Travel+Leisure. She lives on the west coast of Florida with her family.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Down Along with That Devil’s Bones with Connor Town O'Neill
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday\, September 29\, 2020 from 5-6 pm for a great conversation with Connor Town O’Neill\, author of In Down Along with That Devil’s Bones. You must email us at mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your link and password to attend. This event is FREE to our readers!\n \nJournalist Connor Towne O’Neill takes a deep dive into American history\, exposing the still-raging battles over monuments dedicated to one of the most notorious Confederate generals\, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Through the lens of these conflicts\, O’Neill examines the legacy of white supremacy in America\, in a sobering and fascinating work sure to resonate with readers of Tony Horwitz\, Timothy B. Tyson\, and Robin DiAngelo. \nWhen O’Neill first moved to Alabama\, as a white Northerner\, he felt somewhat removed from the racism Confederate monuments represented. Then one day in Selma\, he stumbled across a group of citizens protecting a monument to Forrest\, the officer who became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and whom William Tecumseh Sherman referred to as “that devil.” O’Neill sets off to visit other disputed memorials to Forrest across the South\, talking with men and women who believe they are protecting their heritage\, and those who have a different view of the man’s poisonous history. \nO’Neill’s reporting and thoughtful\, deeply personal analysis make it clear that white supremacy is not a regional affliction but is in fact coded into the DNA of the entire country. Down Along with That Devil’s Bones presents an important and eye-opening account of how we got from Appomattox to Charlottesville\, and where\, if we can truly understand and transcend our past\, we could be headed next. \nConnor Towne O’Neill’s writing has appeared in New York magazine\, Vulture\, Slate\, RBMA\, and the Village Voice\, and he works as a producer on the NPR podcast White Lies. Originally from Lancaster\, Pennsylvania\, he lives in Auburn\, Alabama\, where he teaches at Auburn University and with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project. This is his first book.

SUMMARY:Pulpwood Queens Book Club at Main Street Reads
DESCRIPTION:The PQ bookclub meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. On September 24th we’re discussing Dragonfly by Leila Meacham!\n \nJoin us live in the store at 6:30 OR via Zoom. ALL ARE WELCOME!  \n\nAt the height of WWII\, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS\, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds–a Texan athlete with German roots\, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman\, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman\, an orphaned fashion designer\, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer from Princeton — all answer the call of duty\, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately\, in a group code-named DRAGONFLY. \nSoon after their training\, they are dropped behind enemy lines and take up their false identities\, isolated from one another except for a secret drop-box\, but in close contact with the powerful Nazi elite who have Paris under siege. \nThus begins a dramatic and riveting cat-and-mouse game\, as the young Americans seek to stay under the radar until a fatal misstep leads to the capture and the firing-squad execution of one of their team. But…is everything as it seems\, or is this one more elaborate act of spycraft? \n\nThe book is available at the book club discount price at Main Street Reads! Prefer to order the book online? Use our easy link! https://bookshop.org/shop/mainstreetreads \nLeila Meacham is a writer and former teacher who lives in San Antonio\, Texas. She is the author of the bestselling novels Roses\, Somerset and Tumbleweeds.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents Margaret Kimberley (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Meet author Margaret Kimberley with a frank discussion about her work\, Prejudential: Black America and the Presidents. Email us at mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your link and password! \n“Margaret Kimberley gives us an intellectual gem of prophetic fire about all the U.S. presidents and their deep roots in the vicious legacy of white supremacy and predatory capitalism. Such truths seem more than most Americans can bear\, though we ignore her words at our own peril!” \n~ Cornel West\, author of Race Matters \nPrejudential is a concise\, authoritative exploration of America’s relationship with race and black Americans through the lens of the presidents who are elected to represent and govern all of its people. Throughout the history of the United States\, numerous presidents have been remembered as slaveholders\, bigots and inciters of racial violence\, but were others generally regarded as more sympathetic to the plight and interests of black Americans—such as Lincoln\, FDR and Clinton—really much better? And what of all the presidents whose interactions with and impacts on the lives of black America are hardly considered at all? Over the course of 45 chapters—one for each president—Kimberley examines the condition of black America through the attitudes and actions of the highest elected official in the country. This is not meant to be a definitive examination of the topic but rather an informative and engaging guide that illustrates the merits and especially the shortcomings of even those presidents considered more progressive than their contemporaries on race issues. By casting sunlight on an aspect of American history that is largely overlooked\, Prejudential aims to increase awareness in a manner that will facilitate discussion and understanding. \nMargaret Kimberley is a New York-based writer and activist for peace and justice issues. Dr. Cornel West has called her “one the few great truth tellers who\, along with Glen Ford\, Adolph Reed\, Jr. and Bruce Dixon\, preserved her integrity during the Obama years.” She has been an Editor and Senior Columnist for Black Agenda Report since its inception in 2006. Her work has appeared in the Dallas Morning News\, Consortium News\, American Herald Tribune and CounterPunch. She is a contributor to the anthology\, In Defense of Julian Assange. She is a graduate of Williams College and lives in New York City.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Set My Heart to Five with Simon Stephenson (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us September 15th from 3-4 p.m. for an enlightening conversation with Simon Stephenson about his new release\, Set My Heart to Five. Remember to email mainstreetreads@gmail.com for the event link and password to attend! \nFor fans of Fredrik Backman and Gail Honeyman\, a delightfully entertaining\, deceptively poignant debut novel about a human-like bot named Jared\, whose emotional awakening leads him on an unforgettable quest for connection\, belonging and possibly even true love. \nJared works as a dentist in small town Michigan. His life is totally normal\, except for one thing. He is a bot\, engineered with human DNA to look and act like a real person. \nOne day at a screening of classic movie\, Jared feels a strange sensation around his eyes. Everyone knows that bots can’t feel emotions\, but as the theater lights come on\, Jared could swear he’s crying. Confused\, he decides to watch more old movies to figure out what’s happening. The process leads to an emotional awakening that upends his existence. Jared\, it turns out\, can feel. \nOvercome with a full range of emotions\, and facing an imminent reset\, Jared heads west\, determined to forge real connections. He yearns to find his mother\, the programmer who created him. He dreams of writing a screenplay that will change the world. Along the way he might even fall in love. But a bot with feelings is a dangerous proposition\, and Jared’s new life could come to an end before it truly begins. \nDelightfully entertaining and deceptively moving\, Set My Heart to Five is a profound exploration of what makes us human\, and a love letter to outsiders everywhere. \nSimon Stephenson previously wrote Let Not the Waves of the Sea (John Murray)\, a memoir about the loss of his brother in the Indian ocean tsunami. It won Best First Book at the Scottish Book Awards\, was a Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4\, and a Daily Telegraph Book of the Year. Since then he has been dividing his time between the UK and LA\, where he works as a screenwriter\, most recently at Pixar Animation Studios.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: God's Little Bird: A War Orphan's Story with Laura Knotts
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome local author Laura Knotts on Saturday\, September 12\, 2020\, discussing her book God’s Little Bird: A War Orphan’s Story. \n75 years ago\, hundreds of thousands of Baltic citizens were caught in the bloody crossfire of the Soviets and Nazis and forced to flee their homelands. Lithuanian citizens had suffered brutal persecution during earlier Soviet and German occupations\, and by the end of the second Soviet Occupation\, only 1 million Lithuanians remained out of a population of 3 million. \nSimilarly\, in what became known as the Lithuanian Diaspora\, only one in three of those who fled Lithuania as refugees survived. These 60\,000 surviving refugees were detained and sheltered in German Displaced Persons Camp and became known by the name of “God’s Little Birds.” \nThis is the remarkable story of one such “little bird\,” a young boy named Joseph\, who on a cold October day in 1944 was suddenly wrenched from everything he knew and held dear and forced to flee for his life\, leaving his mother\, brothers\, and sisters behind surrounded by mined fields and under a sky black with bombs. However\, like the story of the biblical Joseph who was forced into exile far from his homeland and family\, God had His hand on this little Lithuanian boy\, and in His providential plan\, \nHe brought Joseph safely through a journey of exile\, loss\, persecution\, and despair into a new life in America where by God’s grace\, Joseph’s story was transformed into one of belonging\, prosperity\, hope\, restoration\, and purpose.
