As he tries to honor her memory by saving two young men from a life of crime amid their opioid-ravaged community\, he is drawn into a network of villainy that includes a violent former Klansman\, a far-from-holy minister\, a biker club posing as evangelicals\, and a murderer who has been hiding in plain sight. \nAaron’s only ally is state police officer Ruby Spotted Horse\, a no-nonsense woman who harbors some powerful secrets in her cellar. Despite the air of mystery surrounding her\, Ruby is the only one Aaron can trust. That is\, until the ghost of Fannie Mae shows up\, guiding her father through a tangled web of the present and past and helping him vanquish his foes from both this world and the next. \nDrawn from James Lee Burke’s own life experiences\, Every Cloak Rolled in Blood is a devastating exploration of the nature of good and evil and a deeply moving story about the power of love and family. \nJames Lee Burke is a New York Times bestselling author\, two-time winner of the Edgar Award\, and the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts in Fiction. SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Beth Gilstrap in Conversation with Wiley Cash - "Deadheading and Other Stories" (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom for a special event on Tuesday\, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. ET: \nMEET Beth Gilstrap\, author of Deadheading and Other Stories. Irrevocably tied to the Carolinas\, these stories tell tales of the woebegone\, their obsessions with decay\, and the haunting ache of the region itself–the land of the dwindling pines\, the isolation inherent in the mountains and foothills\, and the loneliness of boomtowns. Predominantly working-class women challenge the status quo by rejecting any lingering expectations or romantic notions of Southern femininity. Small businesses are failing. Factories are closing. Money is tight. The threat of violence lingers for women and girls. Through their collective grief\, heartache\, and unsettling circumstances\, many of these characters become feral and hell-bent on survival. \nGilstrap’s prose teems with wildness and lyricism\, showing the Southern gothic tradition of storytelling is alive and feverishly unwell in the twenty-first century. \nFrom the brokenhearted to the afflicted\, the women in these often macabre stories fight like hell to find their voices and survive the darkness inherent in the modern South. Beth will be in conversation with Wiley Cash and you get a front row seat via our Zoom link below. \nBeth Gilstrap is the author of I Am Barbarella (2015) from Twelve Winters Press. Her work has been selected as Longform.org’s “Fiction Pick of the Week” and chosen by Dan Chaon for inclusion in the Best Microfiction Anthology 2019. She holds an MFA from Chatham University. Her stories\, essays\, and hybrids have appeared in Ninth Letter\, the Minnesota Review\, Denver Quarterly\, Gulf Stream Lit\, and Wigleaf\, among others. Born and raised in the Charlotte area\, she has recently relocated to Louisville. \nJoin the conversation at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VCuQyCpeTPiJbaqdPnT-GQ

SUMMARY:Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars: Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Join in for this cool virtual Bookclub + Author Event for Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars: Space\, Exploration\, and Life on Earth by Kate Greene\, produced by #ReadingWomenLeaders! \n#ReadingWomenLeaders is a bookclub series\, showcasing women leaders in every aspect of life. Prioritizing autobiographies to center the voices of the women themselves\, the club reads and learns about women in the areas of the arts\, politics\, nature\, sciences\, and sports\, among others. \nIndependent bookstores and readers from around the world are welcome to participate in this free series. Learn more HERE. \nRegister to Attend HERE\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Greene was the crew writer and second-in-command on the first simulated Mars mission for the NASA-funded HI-SEAS project. A poet\, essayist\, and former laser physicist\, her work has appeared in multiple publications and radio shows. She’s taught writing at Columbia University\, San Francisco State University\, and the Tennessee Prison for Women. She lives in New York City. \nKate will be joining the Reading Women Leaders Bookclub on August 22\, 2021 and you’re invited to meet the author! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout ONCE UPON A TIME I LIVED ON MARS\n\n\nWhen it comes to Mars\, the focus is often on how to get there: the rockets\, the engines\, the fuel. But upon arrival\, what will it actually be like? \nIn 2013\, Kate Greene moved to Mars. That is\, along with five fellow crew members\, she embarked on NASA’s first HI-SEAS mission\, a simulated Martian environment located on the slopes of Mauna Loa in Hawai’i. For four months she lived\, worked\, and slept in an isolated geodesic dome\, conducting a sleep study on her crew mates and gaining incredible insight into human behavior in tight quarters\, as well as the nature of boredom\, dreams\, and isolation that arise amidst the promise of scientific progress and glory. \nIn Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars\, Greene draws on her experience to contemplate humanity’s broader impulse to explore. The result is a twined story of space and life\, of the standard\, able-bodied astronaut and Greene’s brother’s disability\, of the lag time of interplanetary correspondences and the challenges of a long-distance marriage\, of freeze-dried egg powder and fresh pineapple\, of departure and return. \nBy asking what kind of wisdom humanity might take to Mars and elsewhere in the Universe\, Greene has written a remarkable\, wide-ranging examination of our time in space right now\, as a pre-Mars species\, poised on the edge\, readying for launch.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: A Memoir of Food and Love in Thirteen Courses (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:“Sobremesa reads like a cross between magical realism and the food section of the New York Times. Delicioso!” —Beth Ostrosky-Stern\, New York Times Bestselling Author \nIf food is the universal language of love\, sobremesa is the romance. Gather around the table with C-level career woman turned foodpreneur\, Josephine Caminos Oría\, as she cooks up a magical tale\, told morsel by morsel\, of some of her most memorable tableside chats—sobremesaa—that provided the first-generation Argentine-American the courage to leave the safe life she knew and start over from scratch. \nIn her coming-of-age adventure\, Josephine travels to her family’s homeland of Argentina in search of belonging—to family\, to country\, to a love\, and ultimately\, to oneself. Steeped in the lure of Latin culture\, she pieces together her mom and abuela’s pasts\, along with the nourishing dishes—delectably and spiritually—that formed their kitchen arsenal. But Josephine’s travels from las pampas to the prairie aren’t easy or conventional. She grapples with mystical encounters with the spirit world that lead her to discover a part of herself that\, like sobremesa\, had been lost in translation. Just as she’s ready to give up on love all together\, Josephine’s own heart surprises her by surrendering to a forbidden\, transcontinental tryst with the Argentine man of her dreams. To stay together\, she must make a difficult choice: return to the safe life she knows in the States\, or follow her heart and craft a completely different kind of future for herself—one she never saw coming. \nThis otherworldly\, multigenerational story of a daughter’s love and familial culinary legacy serves up\, in 13 courses\, the timeless traditions that help Josephine navigate transformational love and loss. It’s a reminder that that home really is anywhere the heart is. Sobremesa invites you to linger at the table\, reveal your own hidden truths and savor the healing embrace of time-honored food and the wisdom it espouses. \nCONTACT US AT mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your LINK TO ATTEND!\n\nJosephine Caminos Oría is an Argentine-American cookbook author\, entrepreneur and mom. It was in her early 40s\, with five young children in tow\, that Josephine took a chance on herself\, leaving a C-level career to make dulce de leche. Today\, Josephine\, along with her Argentine husband\, Gastón\, is the founder of La Dorita Cooks\, an all-natural line of dulce de leche products and Pittsburgh’s first resource-based kitchen incubator for start-up and early stage food makers (see www.ladorita.net for more information). In addition\, Josephine is the author of Dulce de Leche: Recipes\, Stories\, and Sweet Traditions (Burgess Lea Press\, February 2017).

SUMMARY:Virtual Launch Party: Gregory Phillips with A Season in Lights
DESCRIPTION:Seattle novelist Gregory Erich Phillips has selected Main Street Reads for the virtual launch of his newest novel\, A Season in Lights. “Written by a true creative\, A Season in Lights paints a moving picture of artists\, dancers and musicians. Gregory Erich Phillips weaves together the heartaches and lucky breaks of two main characters\, Tom and Cammie\, and their friends and families. The vignettes culminate with the impact of coronavirus on NYC\, and ends with a surprisingly tender and uplifting finale.” Carol Van Den Hende\, award-winning author of Goodbye\, Orchid \nThis event is FREE to all Main Street Reads readers and Pulpwood Queen Bookclub members! Join us Sunday evening\, official launch day\, at 8 pm EST via Zoom at: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87141339735?pwd=RnkxK2RVYjNXYjkzNUw5eEp6MnBsUT09 \nMeeting ID: 871 4133 9735\nPasscode: 395745 \nPASSION\, AMBITION AND ESCAPE IN THE COLORFUL ARTISTIC UNDERWORLD OFF-BROADWAY.\nCammie\, a dancer in her mid-thirties\, has just landed her first part in a show since coming to New York City. Yet the tug of familial obligation and the guilt of what she sacrificed to be there weigh down her dancing feet. Her lover\, Tom\, an older piano player\, came to the city himself as a young man in the 1980s with a story eerily in tune with Cammie’s own. \nThrough their triumphs and failures\, both learn the fleetness of glory\, the sweetness of new love\, and how a dream come true isn’t cherished until it passes. The bright lights of the stage intoxicate\, while degradation and despair lurk close behind the curtain. Their sagas are marred by two pandemics\, AIDS in the 1980s and COVID-19 today\, which ravaged the performing arts community\, leaving a permanent scar on those who lived through them. \nThe poignant intersection of their stories reveals a love affair unbound by time\, which reaches across decades through the notes of a piano’s remembered song. \nEarly Praise for A Season in Lights…\n“A Season in Lights is an intimate\, heartfelt ballad to creativity and the passion of the artist. Phillips’ writing is lyrical as a love song and as uplifting as a dream. It is not only one of my new favorite books\, but possibly one of the most important odes to New York City’s artists and the fragility of life since Rent.” \n— Nicole Evelina USA Today bestselling author of The Guinevere’s Tale Trilogy and many other stories of strong women from history and today \n“By drawing us into the glitz and glam of New York City’s creative scene\, and by examining the gritty reality beneath the shine\, Phillips taps all the senses while reminding us that\, no matter what happens in life\, the show must go on—especially for those who dare to dream. Want a sensual but poignant romp behind the curtain? This book delivers.” \nJulie Cantrell\, USA Today and New York Times bestselling author of Perennials \n“A Season in Lights taps into the core of the soul of the New York City theatre community family – from the stage managers to the musicians and dancers\, to the actors whose every heartbeat is dedicated to the performance of their art. Having myself been involved in local theatre and experiencing this thrill\, not only upon the stage\, but in the hectic confines of the green room behind it\, and\, sadly\, witnessing the devastating impact of the Covid epidemic on theatre\, I bow to Phillips’ perfectly captured portrayal of it. Break a leg\, Gregory Phillips!” \nJoe Palmer\, author of A Mariner’s Tale \n“Music and dance thrum in this poignant story about aspiring artists struggling to survive as part of New York’s subway class. Two would-be lovers at opposite ends of their dreams of making it on the big stage share a memorable but fleeting season filled with passion\, love\, friends\, and family. Bursting with charm\, this beautiful tale is chock-full of powerful subjects: depression\, racism\, HIV in the ‘80s\, and the current Covid pandemic. It will touch your heart\, make you want to dance\, sing\, and cry all at the same time.” \nR. Scott Boyer\, award-winning author of Bobby Ether and the Jade Academy and Temple of Eternity \n“Gregory Erich Phillips’ A Season in Lights is a heartfelt and moving love letter to New York City and its artistic community.” \n—Geoffrey Owens\, actor and director \n“A unique\, well-crafted tale adds to the lore and lure of life as an artist braving the challenges of the Big Apple. The pursuit of the performing arts and romance are set against the looming specter of today’s COVID-19 pandemic and the 1980s AIDS crisis. The author offers profound insights into the unpleasant realities of chasing a dream and wraps with an exquisite\, soul-stirring conclusion.” \n—Lafayette Summers\, pianist\, composer and singer

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer - Economy Hall: The Hidden History of a Free Black Brotherhood by Fatima Shaik (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Email mainstreetreads@gmail.com to join us for this important discussion of Economy Hall with author Fatima Shaik! Free to Main Street Reads readers:\n\n\nIt is impossible to imagine New Orleans\, and by extension American history\, without the vibrant and singular Creole culture. In the face of an oppressive white society\, members of the Société d’Economie et d’Assistance Mutuelle built a community and held it together through the era of slavery\, the Civil War\, Reconstruction\, and Jim Crow terrorism. Economy Hall: The Hidden History of a Free Black Brotherhood follows Ludger Boguille\, his family\, and friends through landmark events—from the Haitian Revolution to the birth of jazz—that shaped New Orleans and the United States. \nThe story begins with the author’s father rescuing a century’s worth of handwritten journals\, in French\, from a trash hauler’s pickup truck. From the journals’ pages emerged one of the most important multiethnic\, intellectual communities in the US South: educators\, world-traveling merchants\, soldiers\, tradesmen\, and poets. Although Louisiana law classified them as men of color\, Negroes\, and Blacks\, the Economie brothers rejected racism and colorism to fight for suffrage and education rights for all. \nA descendant of the Economie’s community\, author Fatima Shaik has constructed a meticulously detailed nonfiction narrative that reads like an epic novel. \n\n\nFATIMA SHAIK\, a former professor and journalist\, is a trustee of PEN America and author of six previous short story collections and young adult novels. Economy Hall is her first nonfiction work.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: The Fortunate Ones with Ed Tarkington (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an engaging discussion with author Ed Tarkington. Email us at mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your free link to attend this special virtual event!\n \nA Winter 2021 Read This Next Title! at The Southern Bookseller Review \n“The Fortunate Ones feels like a fresh and remarkably sure-footed take on The Great Gatsby\, examining the complex costs of attempting to transcend or exchange your given class for a more gilded one. Tarkington’s understanding of the human heart and mind is deep\, wise\, and uncommonly empathetic. As a novelist\, he is the real deal. I can’t wait to see this story reach a wide audience\, and to see what he does next.” —Paula McLain\, author of The Paris Wife \nWhen Charlie Boykin was young\, he thought his life with his single mother on the working-class side of Nashville was perfectly fine. But when his mother arranges for him to be admitted as a scholarship student to an elite private school\, he is suddenly introduced to what the world can feel like to someone cushioned by money. That world\, he discovers\, is an almost irresistible place where one can bend—and break—rules and still end up untarnished. As he gets drawn into a friendship with a charismatic upperclassman\, Archer Creigh\, and an affluent family that treats him like an adopted son\, Charlie quickly adapts to life in the upper echelons of Nashville society. Under their charming and alcohol-soaked spell\, how can he not relax and enjoy it all—the lack of anxiety over money\, the easy summers spent poolside at perfectly appointed mansions\, the lavish parties\, the freedom to make mistakes knowing that everything can be glossed over or fixed? \nBut over time\, Charlie is increasingly pulled into covering for Archer’s constant deceits and his casual bigotry. At what point will the attraction of wealth and prestige wear off enough for Charlie to take a stand—and will he? \nThe Fortunate Ones is an immersive\, elegantly written story that conveys both the seductiveness of this world and the corruption of the people who see their ascent to the top as their birthright. \nEd Tarkington’s debut novel Only Love Can Break Your Heart was an ABA Indies Introduce selection\, an Indie Next pick\, a Book of the Month Club Main Selection\, and a Southern Independent Booksellers Association bestseller. A regular contributor to Chapter16.org\, his articles\, essays\, and stories have appeared in a variety of publications including the Nashville Scene\, Memphis Commercial Appeal\, Knoxville News-Sentinel\, and Lit Hub. He lives in Nashville\, Tennessee.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Race Against Time with Jerry Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom for another fabulous Reader Meet Writer event (email us for your personal link to attend this event free from Main Street Reads): \n“For almost two decades\, investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell doggedly pursued the Klansmen responsible for some of the most notorious murders of the civil rights movement. This book is his amazing story. Thanks to him\, and to courageous prosecutors\, witnesses\, and FBI agents\, justice finally prevailed.” —John Grisham\, author of The Guardians \nOn June 21\, 1964\, more than twenty Klansmen murdered three civil rights workers. The killings\, in what would become known as the “Mississippi Burning” case\, were among the most brazen acts of violence during the civil rights movement. And even though the killers’ identities\, including the sheriff’s deputy\, were an open secret\, no one was charged with murder in the months and years that followed. \nIt took forty-one years before the mastermind was brought to trial and finally convicted for the three innocent lives he took. If there is one man who helped pave the way for justice\, it is investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell. \nIn Race Against Time\, Mitchell takes readers on the twisting\, pulse-racing road that led to the reopening of four of the most infamous killings from the days of the civil rights movement\, decades after the fact. His work played a central role in bringing killers to justice for the assassination of Medgar Evers\, the firebombing of Vernon Dahmer\, the 16th Street Church bombing in Birmingham and the Mississippi Burning case. Mitchell reveals how he unearthed secret documents\, found long-lost suspects and witnesses\, building up evidence strong enough to take on the Klan. He takes us into every harrowing scene along the way\, as when Mitchell goes into the lion’s den\, meeting one-on-one with the very murderers he is seeking to catch. His efforts have put four leading Klansmen behind bars\, years after they thought they had gotten away with murder. \nRace Against Time is an astonishing\, courageous story capturing a historic race for justice\, as the past is uncovered\, clue by clue\, and long-ignored evils are brought into the light. This is a landmark book and essential reading for all Americans. \nJerry Mitchell has been a reporter in Mississippi since 1986. A winner of more than 30 national awards\, Mitchell is the founder of the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting. The nonprofit is continuing his work of exposing injustices and raising up a new generation of investigative reporters.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Wilmington's Lie with David Zucchino
DESCRIPTION:Email us for your personal link to attend this event FREE! \nFrom Pulitzer Prize-winner David Zucchino comes a searing account of the Wilmington riot and coup of 1898\, an extraordinary event unknown to most Americans. \nBy the 1890s\, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen\, police officers and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper\, The Record. But across the state—and the South—white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny. \nIn 1898\, in response to a speech calling for white men to rise to the defense of Southern womanhood against the supposed threat of black predators\, Alexander Manly\, the outspoken young Record editor\, wrote that some relationships between black men and white women were consensual. His editorial ignited outrage across the South\, with calls to lynch Manly. \nBut North Carolina’s white supremacist Democrats had a different strategy. They were plotting to take back the state legislature in November “by the ballot or bullet or both\,” and then use the Manly editorial to trigger a “race riot” to overthrow Wilmington’s multi-racial government. Led by prominent citizens including Josephus Daniels\, publisher of the state’s largest newspaper\, and former Confederate Colonel Alfred Moore Waddell\, white supremacists rolled out a carefully orchestrated campaign that included raucous rallies\, race-baiting editorials and newspaper cartoons\, and sensational\, fabricated news stories. \nWith intimidation and violence\, the Democrats suppressed the black vote and stuffed ballot boxes (or threw them out)\, to win control of the state legislature on November eighth. Two days later\, more than 2\,000 heavily armed Red Shirts swarmed through Wilmington\, torching the Record office\, terrorizing women and children\, and shooting at least sixty black men dead in the streets. The rioters forced city officials to resign at gunpoint and replaced them with mob leaders. Prominent blacks—and sympathetic whites—were banished. Hundreds of terrified black families took refuge in surrounding swamps and forests. \nThis brutal insurrection is a rare instance of a violent overthrow of an elected government in the U.S. It halted gains made by blacks and restored racism as official government policy\, cementing white rule for another half century. It was not a “race riot\,” as the events of November 1898 came to be known\, but rather a racially motivated rebellion launched by white supremacists. \nIn Wilmington’s Lie\, Pulitzer Prize-winner David Zucchino uses contemporary newspaper accounts\, diaries\, letters and official communications to create a gripping and compelling narrative that weaves together individual stories of hate and fear and brutality. This is a dramatic and definitive account of a remarkable but forgotten chapter of American history. \nDavid Zucchino is a contributing writer for The New York Times. He has covered wars and civil conflicts in more than three dozen countries. Zucchino was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his dispatches from apartheid South Africa and is a four-time Pulitzer Prize finalist for his reporting from Iraq\, Lebanon\, Africa\, and inner-city Philadelphia. He is the author of Thunder Run and Myth of the Welfare Queen.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: The Uncollected Stories of Allan Gurganus
DESCRIPTION:Email us for your personal link to attend this event FREE! \nOne of “the best writers of our time” (Ann Patchett) offers this hilarious yet haunting cycle of stories—all previously uncollected. \nSince the explosive publication of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All\, Allan Gurganus has dazzled readers as “the most technically gifted and morally responsive writer of his generation” (John Cheever). He has been praised as “one of America’s preeminent novelists\, our prime conductor of electric sentences” (William Giraldi). Above all\, Allan Gurganus is a seriously funny writer\, an expert at evoking humor\, especially in our troubled times. \nNow he offers nine classic tales—never before between covers. They attest to his mastery of the short story and the growing depth of his genius.? Offering characters antic and tragic\, Gurganus charts the human condition—masked and unmasked—as we live it now. “Once upon a time” collides with the everyday. We meet a mortician whose dedication to his departed clients exceeds all legal limits. We encounter a seaside couple fighting to save their family dog from Maine’s fierce undertow. A virginal seventy-eight-year-old grammar school librarian has her sole erotic experience with a polyamorous snake farmer. A vicious tornado sends twin boys aloft\, leaving only one of them alive. And\, in an eerily prescient story\, cholera strikes a rural village in 1849 and citizens come to blame their doomed young doctor who saved hundreds. \nThese meticulously crafted parables recall William Faulkner’s scope and Flannery O’Connor’s corrosive wit. Imbuing each story with charged drama\, Gurganus\, a sublime ventriloquist\, again proves himself among our funniest writers and our wisest. \nAllan Gurganus is widely translated\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Adaptations of his fiction have earned four Emmys\, and his stories have been appearing in The New Yorker since 1974. He lives in a small town in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Ingram presents #BlackVoices Sponsored by HarperCollins!
DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE register for this special event\, including these authors and books: \nAn electrifying first novel from a riveting new voice in American fiction (George Saunders): A young woman returns to her childhood home in the American South and uncovers secrets about her father’s life and death \nBillie James’ inheritance isn’t much: a little money and a shack in the Mississippi Delta. The house once belonged to her father\, a renowned black poet who died unexpectedly when Billie was four years old. Though Billie was there when the accident happened\, she has no memory of that day–and she hasn’t been back to the South since. \nThirty years later\, Billie returns but her father’s home is unnervingly secluded: her only neighbors are the McGees\, the family whose history has been entangled with hers since the days of slavery. As Billie encounters the locals\, she hears a strange rumor: that she herself went missing on the day her father died. As the mystery intensifies\, she finds out that this forgotten piece of her past could put her in danger. \nInventive\, gritty\, and openhearted\, The Gone Dead is an astonishing debut novel about race\, justice\, and memory that lays bare the long-concealed wounds of a family and a country. —Publishers Weekly \n\nIn the tradition of Notorious RBG\, a lively\, beautifully designed\, full-color illustrated celebration of the life\, wisdom\, wit\, legacy\, and fearless style of iconic American Congresswoman Maxine Waters. \n“Let me just say this: I’m a strong black woman\, and I cannot be intimidated. I cannot be undermined. I cannot be thought to be afraid of Bill O’Reilly or anyone.”–Maxine Waters \nTo millions nationwide\, Congresswoman Maxine Waters is a hero of the resistance and an icon\, serving eye rolls\, withering looks\, and sharp retorts to any who dare waste her time on nonsense. But behind the Auntie Maxine meme is a seasoned public servant and she’s not here to play. Throughout her forty years in public service and eighty years on earth\, U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd district has been a role model\, a crusader for justice\, a game-changer\, a trailblazer\, and an advocate for the marginalized who has long defied her critics\, including her most vocal detractor\, Donald J. Trump. And she’s just getting started. \nFrom her anti-apartheid work and support of affirmative action to her passionate opposition to the Iraq War and calls to hold Trump to account\, you can count on Auntie Maxine to speak truth to power and do it with grace and\, sometimes\, sass. As ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee and one of the most powerful black women in America\, she is the strong\, ethical voice the country has always needed\, especially right now. \nReclaiming Her Time pays tribute to all things Maxine Waters\, from growing up in St. Louis “too skinny” and “too black\,” to taking on Wall Street during the financial crisis and coming out on top in her legendary showdowns with Trump and his cronies. Featuring inspiring highlights from her personal life and political career\, beloved memes\, and testimonies from her many friends and fans\, Reclaiming Her Time is a funny\, warm\, and admiring portrait of a champion who refuses to stay silent in the face of corruption and injustice; a powerful woman who is an inspiration to us all. \n\n“There was no greater friend to the poor\, to the lost\, to the left out\, and to the left behind. If you want to understand this great man\, read his historic\, important book and learn the lessons and values from his ‘moral voice crying in the wilderness’ on behalf of our American democracy.” –Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) \nKnown for his poise\, intellect\, and influence until his death in October 2019\, Elijah Cummings was one of the most respected figures in contemporary politics\, a politician who held fast to his beliefs but was not afraid to reach across the aisle in the name of friendship and progress. Since his earliest days in government through his time as a representative and chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee\, he proved his abilities as a politician who could operate at the highest levels of democracy\, serving the people of Baltimore and illustrating the importance of working with the underdog. \nYet in his final years of life\, Cummings recognized that democracy was the underdog. We’re Better Than This draws from Cummings’s own life to show the formative moments that prepared him for the disturbing first years of the Trump presidency and spurred him to hold the administration accountable for their actions. Weaving together the urgent drama of modern-day politics and character-defining stories from his past\, Cummings offers a never-before-told perspective on how his personal history\, coming of age in South Baltimore\, laid the foundation of a life spent fighting for justice. He goes behind the scenes with the House Democratic leadership\, offering an eye-opening chronicle of the grim realities of holding the Trump administration to account. Detailing this moment of unprecedented obstructionism by both the president and Republicans\, Cummings presents a vital defense of how government oversight defines our collective trust\, examining the dangerous precedent for both parties that exists if the executive branch remains above public scrutiny. \nPart memoir\, part call to action\, We’re Better Than This is the story of our modern-day democracy and the threats that we all must face together\, as well as a retrospective on the life and career of one of our country’s most inspirational politicians. As we approach another test of our democracy\, the next race for the White House\, We’re Better Than This reminds people that in this country we don’t elect kings\, and we cannot afford four more years of this false one. \n\n“The Kindest Lie is a deep dive into how we define family\, what it means to be a mother\, what secrets we owe to those we love\, and what it means to grow up Black. This beautifully crafted debut will keep you asking these questions and more.” –Jodi Picoult\, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Two Ways \nThe Kindest Lie examines the heartbreaking divide between Black and white communities and plumbs the emotional depths of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans in the wake of the financial crisis\, perfectly capturing the profound racial injustices and class inequalities roiling society. \nA promise could betray you. \nIt’s 2008\, and the inauguration of President Barack Obama ushers in a new kind of hope. In Chicago\, Ruth Tuttle\, an Ivy-League educated Black engineer\, is married to a kind and successful man. He’s eager to start a family\, but Ruth is uncertain. She has never gotten over the baby she gave birth to–and was forced to leave behind–when she was a teenager. She had promised her family she’d never look back\, but Ruth knows that to move forward\, she must make peace with the past. \nReturning home\, Ruth discovers the Indiana factory town of her youth is plagued by unemployment\, racism\, and despair. As she begins digging into the past\, she unexpectedly befriends Midnight\, a young white boy who is also adrift and looking for connection. Just as Ruth is about to uncover a burning secret her family desperately wants to keep hidden\, a traumatic incident strains the town’s already searing racial tensions\, sending Ruth and Midnight on a collision course that could upend both their lives. \nThe Kindest Lie examines the heartbreaking divide between Black and white communities and plumbs the emotional depths of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans in the wake of the financial crisis. Capturing the profound racial injustices and class inequalities roiling society\, Nancy Johnson’s debut novel offers an unflinching view of motherhood in contemporary America and the never-ending quest to achieve the American Dream.

Legends of sunken ships\, quarantined drifters\, wartime burial grounds\, and lost Indian tribes have nicknamed the town “Coffin Island.” However\, much of the folklore has been entombed by colorful beach shops\, greasy crab shacks and bustling sunbathers. That is\, until the summer of 2019 when young fossil hunter\, Teal McHone\, becomes the last person to lay eyes on a child snatched from the shoreline on a hot July evening. Suddenly the small beach town once again lives up to its dark reputation\, and the kidnapping ignites a chain of sinister events along the South Carolina coast. Will Teal realize just what she saw in time to save the girl? \nThis coming-of-age\, romantic thriller will keep the pages turning as Teal fights to unearth all that’s hidden beneath the sands and souls on this tiny southern beach. The pull of the ocean tempers the pace of her awakening and the fates of all those caught up in its enigmatic motion. Will the strengthening tide pull the lost further out to sea or finally deliver them safely back to shore? \nMeet the Author\nLorna Hollifield was born in Asheville\, North Carolina\, but now enjoys the “salt life” outside of Charleston\, South Carolina with her family and favorite Springer Spaniel. \nHollifield began her professional writing journey as a tourism and travel blogger before finally breaking into the fiction market when Pen Name Publishing picked up her debut novel\, Tobacco Sun\, in 2017.  Since then Lorna served as President for the South Carolina Writers Association\, has been a featured speaker at numerous literary conferences\, was published in the Fall Lines literary anthology\, and spent a year as the book columnist for Skirt Magazine. \nWhen Lorna isn’t writing\, she is most likely bumming on the beach\, or exploring the never-ending South Carolina LowCountry she loves so much. Her first novel was Tobacco Sun.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Better Boys\, Better Men with Andrew Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Zoom discussion on Thursday\, October 15 from 7-8 pm! Email mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your event link and password: \nIn Better Boys\, Better Men\, cultural critic and New York Times contributor Andrew Reiner argues that men today are working on an outdated model of masculinity\, which prevents them in moments of distress and vulnerability from marshalling the courage\, strength\, and resiliency—the very characteristics we regularly champion in men—they need to thrive in a world vastly different from the ones their fathers and grandfathers grew up in. According to Reiner\, this outdated model of manhood can have devastating effects on the entire culture and\, especially boys and men\, from falling behind in the classroom and rising male unemployment rates to increased levels of depression and disturbing upticks in violence on a mass scale. \nReiner interviews boys and men of all ages\, educators\, counselors\, therapists\, and physicians throughout the United States to better understand what factors are preventing the country’s boys and men from developing the emotional resiliency they need. He also introduces readers to the boys and men at the vanguard of a new masculinity that empowers them to find and express the full range of their humanity. Urgent and necessary\, Better Boys\, Better Men will change the way we talk about boys and men in America today. \nAndrew Reiner is a professor at Towson University\, where he offers the seminar “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He has written on masculinity and men’s issues for the New York Times\, the Washington Post Magazine\, and Italy’s la Republica . His work has been featured on NPR\, the Canadian Broadcasting Company\, and in Men’s Health\, Forbes\, and The Guardian. He speaks about masculinity regularly at schools and conferences around the world.\n \n
