SUMMARY:Booksigning: Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Growing Up Gullah in the Lowcountry when author Josie Olsvig will be here to sign copies – a perfect time to launch this important book as we wrap up African American History Month! \nThis is a bright\, colorful and informative children’s book about the Gullah culture derived from West African slave descendants. It is a book that may be used to explain differing cultures and black history. The author acquaints the reader with heirs’ property\, the parcels of land many of the Gullah live on in the Lowcountry and surrounding Sea Islands acquired by freedmen after the Civil War. \nOther numerous aspects of the Gullah culture are introduced including sweetgrass basket making\, a time-honored tradition brought from West Africa\, herbal medicines\, Southern cooking which incorporates many plants and vegetables brought from Africa\, as well as the importance of faith and family. Certain points about the Civil War are discussed and the African American hero Robert Smalls is introduced. All of this is conveyed through the use of thirty colorful illustrations designed by a Lowcountry artist. \nA parent/teacher guide\, as well as discussion questions\, are included in the work. \nAbout Josie Olsvig \nFollowing more than thirty years in public service as an attorney and human rights advocate\, Josie retired and moved along with her husband to the Charleston\, South Carolina area. After experiencing a series of vivid dreams about an enslaved woman and her white master\, the author began to research the Gullah culture\, race-based slavery and the history of Charleston. Based on five years of research\, site visits and interviews with Gullahs\, the author penned this book for children and a soon to be released historical novel.

SUMMARY:Booksigning and Discussion: The Dog Went Over the Mountain by Peter Zheutlin
DESCRIPTION:We’re super excited to host Peter Zheutlin\, author of the New York Times bestseller Rescue Road: One Man\, Thirty Thousand Dogs and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway this Saturday! Peter will be at Main Street Reads to discuss his eighth book release: THE DOG WENT OVER THE MOUNTAIN: Travels with Albie: An American Journey \n\n\n\nIn his latest book\, Peter embarks on a journey to take the measure of America with a loyal friend. On the cusp of turning sixty-five\, Peter and his beloved Albie\, a rescue dog of similar vintage\, take a poignant\, often bemusing\, and keenly observed journey across America and discover a big-hearted\, welcoming country filled with memorable characters. \n\n\n\nThey come away with a newfound appreciation for the life they temporarily left behind\, and a determination to live more fully in the moment as old age looms. \n\n\n\nInspired by John Steinbeck\, this 9\,000-mile odyssey allows Zheutlin to experience all that America is and means today\, and having Albie by his side opens up people and pockets of this country (and a few new smells). Similar in approach and tone to Bill Bryson’s bestselling travel classics\, but with an endearing canine sidekick\, The Dog Went Over the Mountain will delight dog lovers\, baby boomers\, and anyone who seeks to experience life on the open road with a four-legged companion. \n\n\n\n“Peter Zheutlin has written a lovely\, moving\, important book about a subject that is both heartbreaking and joyful. [Dogs] are one way God tests our compassion.”  —Dean Koontz\n\n\n\n“Heartwarming doesn’t suffice to describe it: this tale of stray\, unwanted\, and abandoned dogs\, and the people who devote their lives to saving them\, restores faith in humanity.” —Alexandra Horowitz\, New York Times bestselling author of Inside of a Dog\n\n\n\n“Peter Zheutlin takes us on a dog lover’s ultimate road trip. A canine caravan with heart and soul.” —Teresa Rhyne\, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling The Dog Lived\, And So Will I\n\n\n\nBook Discussion Followed by Signing\n\n\n\nPeter will have a Power Point presentation at 11 a.m.\, followed by signing of his work. Seating is limited so we suggest you get here early! REFRESHMENTS WILL BE SERVED! \n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Zheutlin\n\n\n\n\n\nPeter Zheutlin is a freelance journalist and author whose work has appeared regularly in The Boston Globe and The Christian Science Monitor. Mr. Zheutlin has also written for The Los Angeles Times\, Parade Magazine\, AARP Magazine and numerous other publications in the U.S. and abroad. \n\n\n\nHe is the author of The New York Times best seller Rescue Road: One Man\, Thirty Thousand Dogs and a Million Miles on the Last Hope Highway (Sourcebooks\, 2015)\, Around the World on Two Wheels: Annie Londonderry’s Extraordinary Ride (Citadel Press\, 2007) and Rescued: What Second Chance Dogs Teach Us About Living with Purpose\, Loving with Abandon\, and Finding Joy in the Little Things (TarcherPerigee\, October\, 2017). His newest book is The Dog Went Over the Mountain: Travels with Albie\, An American Journey (Pegasus Books\, September\, 2019)\, inspired by a re-reading of John Steinbeck’s beloved classic\, Travels With Charley: In Search of America.

SUMMARY:Poetry Booksigning: Blunt Tongue with Courtney Bates
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, August 10th when author and poet Courtney Bates will be at Main Street Reads signing her new release\, Blunt Tongue! Refreshments will be served. \nBlunt Tongue is a collection of poetry by Courtney Bates. Experiences in death\, grief\, sex\, happiness\, and misadventures in coping are all explored in this provocatively open series of poems. Courtney is no stranger to the arts world as an Executive Director for a live theatre company (The Flowertown Players!)\, an actor\, director\, and singer – she has filled her life with artistic endeavors. \nWriting and publishing a book of poetry still seemed far from reach\, but as this 30-year-old knows: life doesn’t wait for you to jump on\, you have to be an active participant in it. Having lost her parents at a young age and being married and divorced\, Courtney has seen a lot\, yet you will find humor and compassion in her writing that speaks to us all. \nAccompanying Courtney’s 30+ poems is stunning photography by Mauricio Arias and Raheel Gauba of Chrisman Studios. The soft female form is confronted with hard elements as a testament to the heroine nature of women. Together\, the poems and photographs create a beautiful representation of the resilience and strength that all women possess. \nCourtney grew up in Charleston (James Island) with a passion for the arts at a young age\, playing violin\, singing\, and performing in theatre. She received her BA in Arts Management from the College of Charleston in 2012. She was the previous Executive Director for Threshold Repertory Theatre in downtown Charleston and has been the current Executive Director with The Flowertown Players for two years. Her writing started with songs and poetry inspired by artists like Alanis Morrisette and Ani Difranco and has matured as she has over the last 15 years. \nAside from being a newly published author\, Courtney is an actor\, director\, karaoke enthusiast\, and cat mom.
