SUMMARY:Children's Booksigning with PK Potts!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday morning\, July 17th\, for a special book-signing with South Carolina author PK Potts\, visiting us from Walterboro with three young reader selections: Army the Armadillo\, If the Tree Could Talk\, and A Little Girl Named Sad. \nArmy the Armadillo\nArmy the Armadillo is an enchanting tale of unexpected friendships and overcoming obstacles in unusual habitats. When a veteran and his family travel from Ft. Hood\, Texas to live on the spectacular Pacific coast in Coos Bay\, Oregon they are startled by a strange stowaway! Encounters in a forest of furry bullies create memorable friendships between a little girl\, a prickly partner and the little armored one. \nIf the Tree Could Talk\nSit under the shade of the Half-Way Oak\, one of the Famous Trees of Texas. Listen with the little Cherokee girl as the tree weaves a tale. From acorn to oak\, the spirit of the tree comes alive with stories of the Cherokee Nation and famous marshals and outlaws traveling the old Ft. Griffin stagecoach pass. The tree talks with the wind and his favorite little person\, bringing him from tears to triumph recalling 200 years of history. \nA Little Girl Named Sad\nThis young adult novel\, based on a true story\, is about a girl’s difficult trials encountered while growing up with teenage alcoholic parents. Sometimes brutal\, often funny\, it is a frank and startling account of the damaging imprints left behind on children raised by parents with addictive behavior. This journey will take readers from the bluebonnets of Texas\, snow banks in Illinois\, and into the beautiful forests of Oregon. \nA candid chronicle of a child growing into womanhood that will encourage others who have trod this rocky path and help them to discover their own unique ways to face the obstacles from their past and the scars left behind. \npk potts is a graduate of The Institute of Children’s Literature. She is the author of the children’s book “Army the Armadillo” and “If the Tree Could Talk”\, and a featured poet in “The Poet’s Word\,” an anthology published by Steady Moon Press. A freelance poet\, writer and photographer whose work has appeared in Germany\, Texas\, Oregon and The Carolinas.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Nowhere Girl with Cheryl Diamond (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Excited to participate in this stellar Reader Meet Writer event about a book we’re all loving: NOWHERE GIRL. CONTACT US for information on how to join in that night – you won’t want to miss it!\n \nAn absolutely breathless read. Nowhere Girl is a courageous\, heart-breaking\, and beautifully written story of a girl doing everything in her power to protect the ones she loves.”\n—Paul Haggis\, Academy Award-winning writer/director of Crash\, Million Dollar Baby\, and Casino Royale \n“By the age of nine\, I will have lived in more than a dozen countries\, on five continents\, under six assumed identities. I’ll know how a document is forged\, how to withstand an interrogation\, and most important\, how to disappear…” \nWild\, heart-wrenching\, and unexpectedly funny\, Nowhere Girl is an inspiring coming-of-age memoir about running for freedom against the odds. \nTo the young Cheryl Diamond\, life felt like one big adventure\, whether she was hurtling down the Himalayas in a rickety car or mingling with underworld fixers. Her family appeared to be an unbreakable gang of five. One day they were in Australia\, the next South Africa\, the pattern repeating as they crossed continents\, changed identities\, and erased their pasts. What Diamond didn’t yet know was that she was born into a family of outlaws fleeing from the highest international law enforcement agencies\, a family with secrets that would eventually catch up to all of them. \nBy the time she was in her teens\, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies\, but as she grew\, love and trust turned to fear and violence\, and her family—the only people she had in the world—began to unravel. She started to realize that her life itself might be a big con\, and the people she loved\, the most dangerous of all. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed\, all that was left was a girl from nowhere. \nSurviving would require her to escape\, and to do so Diamond would have to unlearn all the rules she grew up with. Like The Glass Castle meets Catch Me If You Can\, Nowhere Girl is an impossible-to-believe true story of self-discovery and triumph. \nCONTACT US for information on how to join the event or head here to register! \nCheryl Diamond is now a citizen of Luxembourg and lives between there and Rome. Her behind-the-scenes account of life as a teenage model\, Model: A Memoir\, was published in 2008. Diamond´s second book\, Naked Rome\, reveals the Eternal City through the eyes of its most fascinating people.

SUMMARY:Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May: Summer Reading Spectacular!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, June 26th for an amazing event featuring authors Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May\, debuting their middle-grade novel\, The Islanders\, available for pre-order now at Main Street Reads! \nTeachers\, students\, librarians and reading groups can also access a curriculum guide HERE. \nThe morning will feature an intro to these wonderful authors as well as free treats\, AND an open mic for middle graders to share their own writing! If you’re a middle school student who wants on stage that day\, drop us an email at mainstreetreads@gmail.com to get on the list\, or have your teacher put you on the list! Open mic readers will be given up to five minutes to read their essay\, poem or short story\, staying on key themes from The Islander: friendship\, inclusion and conservation. Students selected to read will also receive a gift from the authors! \nCo-written with first-time author and friend Angela May\, The Islanders introduces Monroe’s trademark passion for the environment to a new generation of readers as they follow eleven-year-old Jake and the summer he’s forced to spend on tiny Dewees Island with his grandmother. \nEverything in his life is turned upside down: Jake does not know anyone\, the island is a nature sanctuary with no cars or paved roads\, no stores or restaurants\, and to make matters worse\, Jake’s grandmother doesn’t believe in cable or the internet. When Jake meets new friends Macon and Lovie\, the three embark on island adventures until one mistake changes everything. Ultimately\, Jake discovers a deep love for the island and the healing power of nature. \nMary Alice Monroe has always been captivated by the beauty and fragility of the wild habitat around her. In particular\, the coastal southern landscape became a strong and important focus in many of her novels. She is the New York Times bestselling author of 27 books\, including the Beach House series: The Beach House\, Beach House Memories\, Swimming Lessons\, Beach House for Rent\, and Beach House Reunion\, On Ocean Boulevard\, and her latest book in the series The Summer of Lost and Found which will also be available for purchase/signing that day. Monroe’s debut middle-grade fiction series\, The Islanders\, releases June 15\, 2021. \nHer bestselling novel The Beach House is also a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie\, starring Andie McDowell\, Minka Kelly\, and Chad Michael Murray. \nMonroe is also an active conservationist and supports numerous conservation-focused organizations. Her work includes serving as a board member emeritus for the South Carolina Aquarium and a state-certified member of the Island Turtle Team. She lives on in Isle of Palms\, South Carolina\, which is a source of inspiration for many of her books. \nAngela May is the founder of May Media and PR and a former award-winning television news journalist who helps promote great books and share important community stories as a media specialist. She has been working with Mary Alice Monroe for more than a decade. The Islanders is their first book together! Angela’s husband is a middle school assistant principal. They have two children and live in Mount Pleasant\, South Carolina. \nAlso Appearing: Local Favorite Jewel Sweeney!\nSummerville’s own Jewel Sweeney will be on hand\, launching her two newest middle-grade books\, Blueberry Ballerina and More Than a Jock. Jewel will join the festivities at 11 a.m. after her appearance at the Summerville Farmers Market.\n \nFrom the More Than Surface Level series: More Than a Jock features Alex Findman\, the self-proclaimed “King of the Nerds” at Eastside High School. He is ready to take on the eleventh grade and reign as the top student in the entire school\, if he can handle AP Chemistry. Alex finds out that his chemistry class won’t just be difficult because of the material\, but also because the teacher has chosen their lab partners for them. Alex has been paired with a senior and varsity quarterback\, Brad. Alex fears having to do work for both of them and maintaining his soaring GPA. In just a few short weeks\, Alex begins to see that not all athletes are dumb meatheads like he thought. And Brad proves to him that he is more than just some jock. \nIn Blueberry Ballerina\, Lacey Hudson is a bright and beautiful high school dancer in the upstate. Her parents own a small farm with fruit and horses. Lacey loves her farm almost as much as she loves dancing. Lacey’s skills earn her a spot with a summer program in Kansas City to dance with a professional company. She soars above and beyond what anyone would ever expect of a small-town farm girl to overcome the jealousy of others. Lacey’s hard work and positive attitude bring her face to face with the best ballerinas with the worst attitudes. \nWe look forward to seeing you on this special Summer Reading day to get signed books from these amazing authors and enjoy treats\, aspiring young writers and community on Hutchinson Square… \nEnjoy more Mary Alice Monroe selections HERE

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Local Author Matt Loveland with The Artist: Faith\, Science and the Rest of Us
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating chat and Meet the Author event with local author Matt Loveland\, and get a signed copy of his new release: The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us. \nAbout the Book:\nYou matter because you were made.Created\, on purpose\, in the very image of God. And that’s not just a slogan. That’s something author Matt Loveland set out to prove. You believe the world was created. At least\, statistically you do. According to a 2018-2019 PEW Research poll\, 96% of Americans believe in a higher power. But whether it’s parents\, school\, or the media\, 100% of us are taught from an early age that faith is the trade of the superstitious; that science and Atheism are one in the same. \nMeet Matt:\nMatt Loveland came to faith in Christ because he was turned off by the irrationality of Atheism; he was drawn in by the logic and reason of God. In The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us\, he takes readers along his journey to discover a surprisingly biblical truth that the majority of Christians believe and at the same time feel they lack the tools to express: that God guided our evolution. On purpose\, and for a reason: because He loves us. And He loves you.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: The Uncollected Stories of Allan Gurganus
DESCRIPTION:Email us for your personal link to attend this event FREE! \nOne of “the best writers of our time” (Ann Patchett) offers this hilarious yet haunting cycle of stories—all previously uncollected. \nSince the explosive publication of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All\, Allan Gurganus has dazzled readers as “the most technically gifted and morally responsive writer of his generation” (John Cheever). He has been praised as “one of America’s preeminent novelists\, our prime conductor of electric sentences” (William Giraldi). Above all\, Allan Gurganus is a seriously funny writer\, an expert at evoking humor\, especially in our troubled times. \nNow he offers nine classic tales—never before between covers. They attest to his mastery of the short story and the growing depth of his genius.? Offering characters antic and tragic\, Gurganus charts the human condition—masked and unmasked—as we live it now. “Once upon a time” collides with the everyday. We meet a mortician whose dedication to his departed clients exceeds all legal limits. We encounter a seaside couple fighting to save their family dog from Maine’s fierce undertow. A virginal seventy-eight-year-old grammar school librarian has her sole erotic experience with a polyamorous snake farmer. A vicious tornado sends twin boys aloft\, leaving only one of them alive. And\, in an eerily prescient story\, cholera strikes a rural village in 1849 and citizens come to blame their doomed young doctor who saved hundreds. \nThese meticulously crafted parables recall William Faulkner’s scope and Flannery O’Connor’s corrosive wit. Imbuing each story with charged drama\, Gurganus\, a sublime ventriloquist\, again proves himself among our funniest writers and our wisest. \nAllan Gurganus is widely translated\, a Guggenheim Fellow\, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Adaptations of his fiction have earned four Emmys\, and his stories have been appearing in The New Yorker since 1974. He lives in a small town in North Carolina.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Joe Palmer with A Mariner's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, November 8th\, from noon ’til 2 pm for a very special signing with Joe Palmer\, hot on the heels of his feature appearance at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in Beaufort on Saturday! \nWe’ll have refreshments and Joe will chat about his amazing novel. Copies will be on sale at the book club price (10% off) and can be personalized by the author for yourself or the perfect holiday gift. Here’s what other amazing authors are saying about this rich and rewarding tale: \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a stunning debut: a seafaring novel rich with lush imagery and colorful characters from an exciting new voice in Southern fiction. With deft narrative skill\, the author takes the protagonist\, a cynical middle-aged mariner\, and his protege\, a troubled young man\, on a voyage of self-discovery that begins on an island in Florida and ends in an Irish fishing village. You don’t want to miss this beautifully crafted page-turner!” \n– Cassandra King\, bestselling author of Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy \n“Hard-edged and gripping.  An intriguing mix of hope and fear.  Fans of Pat Conroy’s evocative novels are going to love this stirring debut.” \n– Steve Berry\, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Protocol \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a richly rendered story scented with sea spray and filled with salty characters seeking grace\, mercy and second chances. Palmer writes with heart and authenticity\, bringing to life an unfortgettable crew worthy of the love and redemption we each hope to find in this life.” – \nNicole Seitz\, author of The Cage-Maker \n“A beautifully drawn sea-faring tale built around a marina full of lovingly flawed characters who have\, in different ways\, been floundered by life; who in rescuing each other\, manage to rescue themselves. Set in the lush beauty of the inlets\, streams and maritime world of North Florida\, A Mariner’s Tale is told with great heart and uncommon compassion by an author who knows the life of tide and salt and of the sea.” \nJanis Owen\, author of American Ghost \nPart nautical yarn\, part romance\, and part coming-of-age story\, A Mariner’s Tale is a page-turner\, but Joe Palmer’s beautiful prose slows the pace to a perfect rhythm\, allowing the reader to participate in the wonders of nature and the resilience of the human heart on a barrier island just off the northeast coast of Florida. \n—Susan Cushman\, author of Friends of the Library and Cherry Bomb\, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Better Boys\, Better Men with Andrew Reiner
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this Zoom discussion on Thursday\, October 15 from 7-8 pm! Email mainstreetreads@gmail.com for your event link and password: \nIn Better Boys\, Better Men\, cultural critic and New York Times contributor Andrew Reiner argues that men today are working on an outdated model of masculinity\, which prevents them in moments of distress and vulnerability from marshalling the courage\, strength\, and resiliency—the very characteristics we regularly champion in men—they need to thrive in a world vastly different from the ones their fathers and grandfathers grew up in. According to Reiner\, this outdated model of manhood can have devastating effects on the entire culture and\, especially boys and men\, from falling behind in the classroom and rising male unemployment rates to increased levels of depression and disturbing upticks in violence on a mass scale. \nReiner interviews boys and men of all ages\, educators\, counselors\, therapists\, and physicians throughout the United States to better understand what factors are preventing the country’s boys and men from developing the emotional resiliency they need. He also introduces readers to the boys and men at the vanguard of a new masculinity that empowers them to find and express the full range of their humanity. Urgent and necessary\, Better Boys\, Better Men will change the way we talk about boys and men in America today. \nAndrew Reiner is a professor at Towson University\, where he offers the seminar “The Changing Face of Masculinity.” He has written on masculinity and men’s issues for the New York Times\, the Washington Post Magazine\, and Italy’s la Republica . His work has been featured on NPR\, the Canadian Broadcasting Company\, and in Men’s Health\, Forbes\, and The Guardian. He speaks about masculinity regularly at schools and conferences around the world.\n \n

SUMMARY:Pulpwood Queens Book Club at Main Street Reads
DESCRIPTION:The PQ bookclub meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. On September 24th we’re discussing Dragonfly by Leila Meacham!\n \nJoin us live in the store at 6:30 OR via Zoom. ALL ARE WELCOME!  \n\nAt the height of WWII\, five idealistic young Americans receive a mysterious letter from the OSS\, asking them if they are willing to fight for their country. The men and women from very different backgrounds–a Texan athlete with German roots\, an upper-crust son of a French mother and a wealthy businessman\, a dirt-poor Midwestern fly fisherman\, an orphaned fashion designer\, and a ravishingly beautiful female fencer from Princeton — all answer the call of duty\, but each for a secret reason of his or her own. They bond immediately\, in a group code-named DRAGONFLY. \nSoon after their training\, they are dropped behind enemy lines and take up their false identities\, isolated from one another except for a secret drop-box\, but in close contact with the powerful Nazi elite who have Paris under siege. \nThus begins a dramatic and riveting cat-and-mouse game\, as the young Americans seek to stay under the radar until a fatal misstep leads to the capture and the firing-squad execution of one of their team. But…is everything as it seems\, or is this one more elaborate act of spycraft? \n\nThe book is available at the book club discount price at Main Street Reads! Prefer to order the book online? SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: NYT Bestselling Author Silas House! (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us July 9th at 7 p.m. for a special chat with NYT bestselling author Silas House! You must email us at mainstreetreads@gmail.com to confirm participation. PLUS: Those attending this virtual event will receive a book buck to redeem on any of Silas’ titles in the store. Be sure to call us to reserve yours\, or visit the links below to order from our online shop and visit us for your book buck! \nSilas House is the New York Times bestselling author of six novels\, one book of creative nonfiction\, and three plays. His writing has appeared frequently in the New York Times and has been published in Time\, Newsday\, Garden & Gun\, the Oxford American\, and many other places. House is the winner of an E.B. White Award\, the Nautilus Award\, the Intellectual Freedom Prize from the National Council of Teachers of English\, the Storylines Prize from the New York Public Library/NAV Foundation\, and many other honors\, as well as being longlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. He teaches at Berea College and in the Spalding University School of Writing. \nClay’s Quilt\nIn his New York Times best-selling novel Silas House introduced himself as an important voice for Appalachia and\, indeed\, for the entire rural South. In Clay’s Quilt\, now a touchstone for his many fans\, House takes us to Free Creek\, KY\, where a motherless young man forges his path to adulthood surrounded by ancient mountains and his blood relatives and adopted kin: his Aunt Easter tied to her faith and foreboding nature; his Uncle Paul\, the quilter; the wild girls Evangeline and Alma; and a fiddler whose music calls to Clay’s heart. As he struggles to stitch up the void created by his mother’s death\, Clay pieces together his own life’s quilt\, all masterfully wrought by House.\nBlair brings this novel into a beautiful new paperback edition\, along with two other Silas House novels\, A Parchment of Leaves\, and The Coal Tattoo. The three novels\, which share a common setting and some characters are companion novels. They may be read individually\, in any order\, but collectively\, they form a rich tableau of life in rural mountain Kentucky in the last century. \nA Parchment of Leaves \nIn this nationally best-selling novel\, A Parchment of Leaves\, Silas House produced an iconic story of 1900s rural mountain Kentucky that remains a favorite of his many fans.\nOn his way to find work in the Redbud Camp\, Saul Sullivan encounters a Cherokee girl who is said to possess a beauty that brings death to the men who see her. Saul\, however\, is irrevocably drawn to Vine the moment he lays eye on her and believes they are meant to be married\, over the objections of her mother and his. Despite her misgivings\, Saul’s mother\, Esme\, and his brother\, Aaron\, take to Vine from the moment she comes to God’s Creek. In fact\, Vine realizes from the start that Aaron’s interest in her is far more than brotherly. When Saul must leave Vine behind for a year of work\, troubling and violent events follow his departure\, and Vine’s spirit and her love are put to the ultimate test.\nThis novel was the winner of the Award for Special Achievement from the Fellowship of Southern Writers and a finalist for the Southern Book Critics Circle Prize. \nThe Coal Tattoo\nThe Coal Tattoo takes place in World War II-era rural Kentucky\, where twenty-two-year-old Easter and Anneth\, her teenaged sister\, lose their parents young and now must raise each other. Easter finds her life in the Pentecostal Holiness church and its music\, while Anneth dances and drinks in less-than-holy honky-tonks. Will the differences in their young lives and in their very natures tear them apart\, or will the bond of the sisters prevail? In lucid prose with an ear for the voice of the sisters’ time and place\, Silas House brings readers a rich and moving story of coal country.\nThis novel was named the Appalachian Book of the Year and was a finalist for the Southern Book Critics Circle Prize.

His novels include the Green Creek series\, The House on the Cerulean Sea and The Exraordinaries. Some are just extra. TJ Klune’s YA debut\, The Extraordinaries\, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves. Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower\, right? After a chance encounter with Shadow Star\, Nova City’s mightiest hero (and Nick’s biggest crush)\, Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he’ll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray\, Nick’s best friend (and maybe the love of his life). Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer’s Renegades in TJ Klune’s YA debut. \nThe House in the Cerulean Sea\nTor Books | March 17\, 2020 | 9781250217288 \nLinus Baker is a by-the-book caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. He’s tasked with determining whether six dangerous magical children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus is the master of the orphanage. He would do anything to keep the children safe\, even if it means the world will burn. And his secrets will come to light. \nThe House in the Cerulean Sea is an enchanting love story\, masterfully told\, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place—and realizing that family is yours. \n\nTo shop ALL the books in the Reader Meet Writer Series\, click on the image below!

SUMMARY:Special Reader Meet MURDER Virtual Event: Meet Author Beverly Bell!
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL READER MEET MURDER EVENT!\nThe Murder of Marion Miley by Beverly Bell\nNOTE: You must email us at mainstreetreads@gmail.com by 9 a.m. on the day of the event to receive the event link and password to attend. The event takes place at 3 pm EST\, June 9th \nAuthor Beverly Bell explains How Not to Get Away with Murder in the 1940s as she traces the path the killers took: how they got in\, how they got out and how they made their escape. \nToday\, the name Marion Miley is largely unrecognizable\, but in the fall of 1941\, she was an internationally renowned golf champion\, winning every leading women’s tournament except the elusive national title. This unassuming twenty-seven-year-old girl was beloved by all she met\, including celebrities like jazz crooner Bing Crosby. With ambitions to become a doctor\, it seemed Marion Miley was headed for greatness. \nBut on September 28\, six gunshots broke through the early morning stillness of the Lexington Country Club. Marion had been brutally murdered. News of her death spread quickly\, headlining major papers such as the New York Times. Support flooded in\, spurring police in the hunt for her killers. However\, the bombing of Pearl Harbor less than two months later would redirect public attention and sweep Marion’s story to a forgotten corner of time—until now. \nThe Murder of Marion Miley recounts the ensuing manhunt and trial\, exploring the impact of class\, family\, and opportunity in a world where steely determination is juxtaposed with callous murderous intent. As the narrative voice oscillates between Marion’s father\, her best friend\, and one of her killers\, an ever-present specter of what could have been—not just for Marion\, but for all those affected by her tragic death—is conjured. By blending intensive research with the true crime genre\, Beverly Bell succeeds in producing a passionate homage to one of the greatest golfers of the early twentieth century. \nBeverly Bell is an award-winning magazine and crime writer whose work has appeared in Arizona Highways\, Indianapolis Monthly\, Keeneland Magazine\, and Kentucky Monthly. Bell is also a featured consultant in Kentucky Education Television’s recent documentary Forgotten Fame: The Marion Miley Story. \n\nTo shop ALL the books in the Reader Meet Writer Series\, click on the image below!

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday\, May 28th at 7 p.m. for a special evening with Lisa Wingate\, author of The Book of Lost Friends. SPECIAL LOST & FOUND EVENT! Join Lisa Wingate and special guest Diane Plauche\, of the Historic New Orleans Collection\, in conversation with author Kristy Woodson Harvey about a fascinating and little-known facet of American life. \nLouisiana\, 1875: In the tumultuous aftermath of Reconstruction\, three young women set off as unwilling companions on a perilous quest: Lavinia\, the pampered heir to a now-destitute plantation; Juneau Jane\, her illegitimate free-born Creole half-sister; and Hannie\, Lavinia’s former slave. Each carries private wounds and powerful secrets as they head for Texas\, following dangerous roads rife with ruthless vigilantes and soldiers still fighting a war lost a decade before. For Lavinia and Juneau Jane\, the journey is one of inheritance and financial desperation\, but for Hannie\, torn from her mother and eight siblings before slavery’s end\, the pilgrimage westward reignites an agonizing question: Could her long-lost family still be out there? Beyond the swamps lie the seemingly limitless frontiers of Texas and\, improbably\, hope. \nLouisiana\, 1987: For first-year teacher Benedetta Silva\, a subsidized job at a poor rural school seems like the ticket to canceling her hefty student debt—until she lands in Augustine\, Louisiana. The tiny\, out-of-step Mississippi River town seems suspicious of new ideas and new people\, and Benny can hardly comprehend the lives of her poverty-stricken students. But amid the gnarled live oaks and rundown plantation homes lies the century-old history of three young women\, a long-ago journey\, and a hidden book that could change everything. \nLisa Wingate is a former journalist\, an inspirational speaker\, and the author of numerous novels\, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Before We Were Yours\, which has sold more than 2.2 million copies. The co-author\, with Judy Christie\, of the nonfiction book\, Before and After\, Wingate is a two-time ACFW Carol Award winner\, a Christy Award nominee\, an Oklahoma Book Award finalist\, and a Southern Book Prize winner. She lives with her husband in North Texas. \nDiane Plauche is a volunteer with the Historic New Orleans Collection museum. In 2015\, she began assisting the museum in creating a database of historical Lost Friends advertisements\, through which formerly enslaved people desperately tried to find their lost families in the decades following emancipation. After reading Lisa Wingate’s 2017 novel\, Before We Were Yours\, Diane wrote to Lisa about the Lost Friends ads\, saying\, “There is a story in each one of the ads.” To date\, Diane has entered over 2500 unique ads\, and tens of thousands of names in the museum’s database\, preserving the histories of thousands of families. Diane’s work\, and the stories of the real-life Lost Friends inspired Lisa’s newest novel\, The Book Of Lost Friends. \nKristy Woodson Harvey is the bestselling author and the winner of the Lucy Bramlette Patterson Award for Excellence in Creative Writing. Her novel Lies and Other Acts of Love was a finalist for the Southern Book Prize. Her work has been optioned for film and her books have received numerous accolades.
