Now\, years later\, she is summoned back to South Carolina\, to help Addie care for their ailing mother. \n\n\n\nAs Phoebe’s return lures her back into deep-rooted tensions and conflicts\, she is drawn to Celeste\, whose granddaughter went missing years ago. Unfolding against the lush backdrop of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, That Last Carolina Summer is an unforgettable story about the unbreakable bonds of family and the gift of second chances. \n\n\n\nKaren will be in conversation with Mary Alice Monroe\, whose own newest book releases May 13\, Where the Rivers Merge: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKaren White With almost two million books in print in fifteen different languages\, Karen White is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of 36 novels. Although most of her growing up years were spent in London\, England\, Karen’s roots run deep in the South where many of her novels are set.  Her intricate plot lines and compelling characters charm and captivate readers with just the right mix of family drama\, mystery\, intrigue and romance. Her books—referred to as “grit lit” (Southern Women’s Fiction)—have been nominated for numerous national awards\, including the SIBA (Southeastern Booksellers Alliance) Fiction Book of the Year. When not writing\, Karen is reading\, bird watching\, and avoiding cooking. She and her husband have two grown children and a spoiled Havanese dog\, Sophie. She divides her time between Atlanta\, Georgia and the northwest Florida coast. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe comes her highly anticipated Where the Rivers Merge\, the first of two epic and triumphant novels celebrating one intrepid woman’s life across multiple generations in the American South. \n\n\n\n1908: The Lowcountry of South Carolina is at the cusp of change. Mayfield\, the grand estate held for generations by the Rivers family\, is the treasured home of young Eliza. A free spirit\, she refuses to be confined by societal norms and spends her days exploring the vast property\, observing wildlife\, and riding horses. But the Great War\, coastal storms\, and family turmoil bring unexpected challenges to Eliza\, putting her on a collision course with the patriarchal traditions of a bygone era. \n\n\n\n1988: At 88\, Eliza is the scion of the Rivers/DeLancey family. She’s fought a lifetime to save her beloved Mayfield and is too independent and committed to quietly retire and leave the fate of the estate to her greedy son. She must make decisions that will assure the future of the land and her family—or watch them both be split apart.  \n\n\n\nSet against the evocative landscape of the twentieth-century Lowcountry\, Where the Rivers Merge is a dramatic and sweeping multigenerational family story of unyielding love\, lessons learned\, profound sacrifices\, and the indomitable spirit of a woman determined to persevere in the face of change in order to protect her family legacy and the land she loves. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMary Alice Monroe is the New York Times bestselling author of 30 books for adults and children. She has earned numerous accolades and awards including induction into the South Carolina Academy of Authors’ Hall of Fame\, the Southwest Florida Author of Distinction Award\, South Carolina Award for Literary Excellence\, RT Lifetime Achievement Award\, the International Book Award for Green Fiction\, and the Southern Book Prize for Fiction. Monroe is a co-founder of Friends and Fiction and serves on the South Carolina Aquarium Board Emeritus\, The Leatherback Trust\, The Pat Conroy Literary Center Honorary Board\, and Casting Carolinas Advisory Board. She resides in South Carolina and North Carolina with her family. \n\n\n\nBUT WAIT\, THERE’S MORE!\n\n\n\nJust had to share these graphics of books by both authors… THAT’S A WHOLE LOTTA’ SOUTHERN FICTION Y’ALL!

SUMMARY:Book Signing and Salon: Hellions with Julia Elliott
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to host a very special event with author Julia Elliott\, celebrating her powerful story collection\, Hellions. Readers will have the opportunity to remain for a salon-style private event to dig deeper into the themes of Julia’s work: \n\n\n\nTHE EVENTJoin us at Main Street Reads for a free\, open-to-all book signing where you can meet Lisa and grab a signed copy of Hellions — an incredible\, razor-sharp collection of heartfelt stories with southern gothic grit. We’ll ALSO have her other books available\, The Wilds short story collection and her novel\, The New and Improved Romie Futch. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThen\, beginning at 4:00 p.m.\, we’ll transition into an exclusive salon-style discussion with Julia\, complete with wine\, charcuterie\, and thoughtful conversation. \n\n\n\nBonus: The salon will of course include charcuterie and wine\, AND a signed copy of Hellions\, as well as 10% off Julia’s other works. \n\n\n\nWe can’t wait to see you there and join in this unforgettable afternoon of conversation\, and connection as we delve deeper into the wisdom and the wit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book:Hellions: Stories is a visceral collection of stories that run feral through the backwoods of the American South. Known for her genre-defying blend of speculative strangeness and Southern grit\, Elliott’s writing is razor-sharp and yet somehow still magical. \n\n\n\nThe collection opens with a plague-stricken convent and closes in the swamps of South Carolina\, stopping along the way to introduce us to alligator companions\, mystic manuscripts\, and sharp-tongued girls navigating a world that rarely makes room for their rage or radiance. \n\n\n\nHellions never loses its grounding in the truths of its characters. There’s real tenderness here\, woven among the ruin and wonder. Elliott’s prose slices straight to the bone\, but what she reveals is always human: vulnerability\, desire\, grief\, and grit. \n\n\n\nUltimately\, these stories give voice to those living in the margins—outsiders\, women\, children\, the dispossessed. You’ll love being immersed in the author’s weird worlds\, and will be left with much to ponder… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPhoto Credit: Forrest Clonts\n\n\n\nJulia Elliott is the author of the story collection The Wilds\, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice\, and the novel The New and Improved Romie Futch (both from Tin House). Her work has appeared in The Georgia Review\, Tin House\, Conjunctions\, and the New York Times. She has won a Rona Jaffe Writers’ Award\, and her stories have been anthologized in Best American Short Stories and Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses. She teaches English and Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina and lives in Columbia with her husband\, daughter\, and five hens.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Reading Jane with Susannah Kennedy!
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be a part of this eastern leg of Susannah’s tour – come join in the fun and enjoy refreshments and some stimulating conversation. The book will be available to be signed by the author that day! \n\n\n\nReading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir and the book tour “Surviving the Narcissistic Mother” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the estimation of narcissism and its impact on children grows\, more people are identifying as the children of such an upbringing. They have been raised by a parent whose sense of self-importance overshadowed the child\, the child existing rather as an extension of a parental self that lacks empathy and often exploits their child. It’s estimated that nearly 60 million people are damaged by such relational patterns. Children of such parents are vulnerable to poor self-esteem\, lack of boundaries\, and co-dependence. \n\n\n\nHaving emerged on the other side of this phenomenon\, Susannah Kennedy\, author of Reading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir has launched her book tour along the East Coast. The tour includes a stop at Main Street Reads in Summerville!\, where she’ll sign copies as well as address her path to healing. It wasn’t an easy one\, and might not have been achieved at all had Susannah’s mother not inexplicably taken her own life at age 75. When Susannah discovered 45 years of Jane’s diaries\, she had a portal into the narrative her mother created and lived. \n\n\n\nSusannah avoided plunging in for three years\, until she was driven to do so\, to understand finally the mystery her mother presented. What emerges is Susannah’s own story in contrast to her mother’s\, and ultimately leads her to finally shake off the constraints set by Jane’s need to control both the narrative and her daughter. \n\n\n\nPrevious events on the West Coast leg of the tour have demonstrated that Susannah is not alone. Nearly 5 percent or 1 in 200 people suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the sons and daughters are showing up at book events — to take from Susannah’s story of healing the hope they might finally understand and heal their own. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Jane: Surviving the Narcissistic Mother Eastern Seaboard Tour will encompass 12 cities in October and November 2023: Boston and Gloucester\, Massachusetts; Newport\, Rhode Island; Owego and Woodstock\, New York; Washington D.C.; Montrose and Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Charlotte\, North Carolina; Hilton Head Island and Summerville\, South Carolina; and Savannah\, Georgia. For details on dates\, times\, and locations\, please visit www.sibyllinepress.com or www.susannahkennedy.com. Main Street Reads at 115 S. Main Street in Summerville will host Susannah on November 19th from 1-3 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist Susannah Kennedy was born in India and raised in the United States. Later\, she traveled extensively on her own\, first in Italy\, and then through the Middle East and India\, settling for two years in Egypt before becoming a reporter in Dallas\, Texas. At Oxford University\, she specialized in Arab culture and politics\, receiving her DPhil in social anthropology. She and her psychoanalyst husband lived and worked in Germany\, raising three children in a thatched-roof farmhouse in the countryside outside Hamburg. Her mother’s suicide and its aftermath brought them back to California in 2017. They now reside in Marin County.

What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains a mystery\, but the women who descended from Eleanor Dare have long known the truth lies in what she left behind: a message carved onto a large stone and the contents of her treasured Commonplace Book. Brought from England on Eleanor’s fateful voyage to the New World\, her book was passed down through the fifteen generations of daughters who followed as they came of age. Thirteen-year-old Alice had been next in line to receive it\, but her mother’s tragic death fractured the unbroken legacy and the Dare Stone and the shadowy history recorded in the book faded into memory. Or so Alice hoped. \nIn the waning days of World War Two\, Alice is a young widow and a mother herself when she is unexpectedly presented with her birthright: the deed to Evertell\, her abandoned family home and the history she thought forgotten. Determined to sell the property and step into a future free of the past\, Alice returns to Savannah with her own thirteen-year-old daughter\, Penn\, in tow. But when Penn’s curiosity over the lineage she never knew begins to unveil secrets from beneath every stone and bone and shell of the old house and Eleanor’s book is finally found\, Alice is forced to reckon with the sacrifices made for love and the realities of their true inheritance as daughters of Eleanor Dare. \nIn this sweeping tale from award-winning author Kimberly Brock\, the answers to a real-life mystery may be found in the pages of a story that was always waiting to be written. \n“Some things in this world are meant to burn …” The summer of 1956\, a brood of cicadas descends upon Providence Georgia\, a natural event with supernatural repercussions\, unhinging the life of Analeise Newell\, an eleven-year-old piano prodigy. Amidst this emergence\, dark obsessions are stirred\, uncanny gifts provoked\, and secrets unearthed. \nDuring a visit to Mistletoe\, a plantation owned by the wealthy Mayfield family\, Analeise encounters Cordelia Mayfield and her daughter Marlissa\, both of whom possess an otherworldly beauty.  A whisper and an act of violence perpetrated during this visit by Mrs. Mayfield all converge to kindle Analeise’s fascination with the Mayfields. \nAnaleise’s burgeoning obsession with the Mayfield family overshadows her own seemingly\, ordinary life\, culminating in dangerous games and manipulation\, setting off a chain of cataclysmic events with life-altering consequences—all of it unfolding to the maddening whir of a cicada song. \nA novel of courageous parental love and the instructive\, healing bonds that form between humans and animals. Set in early 1950s rural South Carolina\, One Good Mama Bone chronicles Sarah Creamer’s quest to find her mama bone\, after she is left to care for a boy who is not her own but instead is the product of an affair between her husband and her best friend and neighbor\, a woman she calls Sister. When her husband drinks himself to death\, Sarah\, a dirt-poor homemaker with no family to rely on and the note on the farm long past due\, must find a way for her and young Emerson Bridge to survive. But the more daunting obstacle is Sarah’s fear that her mother’s words\, seared in her memory since she first heard them at the age of six\, were a prophesy\, You ain’t got you one good mama bone in you\, girl. \nWhen Sarah reads in the local newspaper that a boy won $680 with his Grand Champion steer at the recent 1951 Fat Cattle Show & Sale\, she sees this as their financial salvation and finds a way to get Emerson Bridge a steer from a local farmer to compete in the 1952 show. But the young calf is unsettled at Sarah’s farm\, crying out in distress and growing louder as the night wears on. Some four miles away\, the steer’s mother hears his cries and breaks out of a barbed-wire fence to go in search of him. The next morning Sarah finds the young steer quiet\, content\, and nursing a large cow. Inspired by the mother cow’s act of love\, Sarah names her Mama Red. And so Sarah’s education in motherhood begins with Mama Red as her teacher. \nBut Luther Dobbins\, the man who sold Sarah the steer\, has his sights set on winning too\, and\, like Sarah\, he is desperate\, but not for money. Dobbins is desperate for glory\, wanting to regain his lost grand-champion dynasty\, and he will stop at nothing to win. Emboldened by her lessons from Mama Red and her budding mama bone\, Sarah is committed to victory even after she learns the winning steer’s ultimate fate. Will she stop at nothing\, even if it means betraying her teacher? \nA wildly inventive novel that stretches the boundaries of what it costs to love and be loved. Sixteen-year-old Gradle Bird has lived her entire life with her Grandpa\, Leonard\, at a seedy motel and truck stop off Georgia’s I-16. But when Leonard moves her to a crumbling old house rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Ms. Annalee Spivey\, Gradle is plunged into a lush\, magical world much stranger and more dangerous than from the one she came.     \nHere she meets Sonny Joe Stitch\, a Siamese fighting fish connoisseur overdosed on testosterone\, a crippled\, Bible-thumping hobo named Ceif “Tadpole” Walker\, and the only true friend she will ever know\, a schizophrenic genius\, music-man\, and professional dumpster-diver\, D-5 Delvis Miles. As Gradle falls deeper into Delvis’s imaginary and fantastical world\, unsettling dangers lurk\, and when surfaced Gradle discovers unforeseen depths in herself and the people she loves the most.     \nGradle Bird is an unusual tale of self-discovery and redemption that explores the infirmities of fatherly love\, the complexities of human cruelty\, and the consequences of guilt\, proving they are possible to overcome no matter how dark and horrible the cause.

SUMMARY:Launch Party: Promise by Regina E. Williams
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for a special book launch and book-signing with Summerville’s own newest debut author Regina E. Williams for a story collection that will have you laughing\, have you crying\, but most of all… have you thinking. \nWe come into this life knowing what brings us pleasure and pain; what we want and need. We are then taught to distrust what we know. It is only in the university of life that we slowly regain our knowing\, where we begin to again trust our instincts and those things our bodies tell us to be true; where we experience pain\, joy\, grief\, pleasures and hopefully love. \nThese stories cover a span of many years\, situations and locales but the reality is that place matters only in our consciousness\, in our memories; a holding place. Each tale offers a brief reflection of some of those markers on the journey from self to self. \nRegina E. Williams is a poet\, writer\, and writing consultant whose poetry and fiction have appeared worldwide. SUMMARY:Trick or Treat Booksigning: The Witches Three Count on Me
DESCRIPTION:“A magical story that captures the fun and spirit of Halloween. I highly recommend it!” – Mary Alice Monroe\, New York Times best-selling author of Turtle Summer and The Islanders\n \nSaturday\, October 30th will feature Trick or Treat at the farmer’s market up the street from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. — and at Main Street Reads we’ll have Trick or Treat all weekend long\, PLUS a special book-signing Saturday with Lynda Bouchard\, featuring her new The Witches Three Count on Me! \nWe look forward to spending a SPOOKTACULAR weekend with you all!\nNothing cures being sent to your room on Halloween night like an unexplored forest. Count on it! This is no ordinary night. It’s Halloween and a mischievous boy has run away from home. He takes a path through twisted forest trees and comes upon a frightful scene – three witches up to no good! They see him\, too\, and that’s when the magic begins. Will he outsmart the witches as they try to capture him? Told through the prism of a child’s imagination\, you’ll discover that daring and wit come in handy when three witches are out to get you. \nThis is a story about taking chances\, thinking on your feet\, and being resourceful and brave when you face the unexpected. It’s about discovering that grown-ups don’t have all the answers. The delightful riddle is a fun teaching tool for parents and teachers of grade school children and will have them returning to this clever story again and again – even when it’s not Halloween. \nLynda Bouchard is a former flight attendant who believes that books are the greatest time machines in the world. Following a globe-trotting aviation career\, she founded Booking Authors Ink\, a boutique marketing firm dedicated to Southern authors. SUMMARY:Children's Booksigning with PK Potts!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday morning\, July 17th\, for a special book-signing with South Carolina author PK Potts\, visiting us from Walterboro with three young reader selections: Army the Armadillo\, If the Tree Could Talk\, and A Little Girl Named Sad. \nArmy the Armadillo\nArmy the Armadillo is an enchanting tale of unexpected friendships and overcoming obstacles in unusual habitats. When a veteran and his family travel from Ft. Hood\, Texas to live on the spectacular Pacific coast in Coos Bay\, Oregon they are startled by a strange stowaway! Encounters in a forest of furry bullies create memorable friendships between a little girl\, a prickly partner and the little armored one. \nIf the Tree Could Talk\nSit under the shade of the Half-Way Oak\, one of the Famous Trees of Texas. Listen with the little Cherokee girl as the tree weaves a tale. From acorn to oak\, the spirit of the tree comes alive with stories of the Cherokee Nation and famous marshals and outlaws traveling the old Ft. Griffin stagecoach pass. The tree talks with the wind and his favorite little person\, bringing him from tears to triumph recalling 200 years of history. \nA Little Girl Named Sad\nThis young adult novel\, based on a true story\, is about a girl’s difficult trials encountered while growing up with teenage alcoholic parents. Sometimes brutal\, often funny\, it is a frank and startling account of the damaging imprints left behind on children raised by parents with addictive behavior. This journey will take readers from the bluebonnets of Texas\, snow banks in Illinois\, and into the beautiful forests of Oregon. \nA candid chronicle of a child growing into womanhood that will encourage others who have trod this rocky path and help them to discover their own unique ways to face the obstacles from their past and the scars left behind. \npk potts is a graduate of The Institute of Children’s Literature. She is the author of the children’s book “Army the Armadillo” and “If the Tree Could Talk”\, and a featured poet in “The Poet’s Word\,” an anthology published by Steady Moon Press. SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Nowhere Girl with Cheryl Diamond (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Excited to participate in this stellar Reader Meet Writer event about a book we’re all loving: NOWHERE GIRL. CONTACT US for information on how to join in that night – you won’t want to miss it!\n \nAn absolutely breathless read. Nowhere Girl is a courageous\, heart-breaking\, and beautifully written story of a girl doing everything in her power to protect the ones she loves.”\n—Paul Haggis\, Academy Award-winning writer/director of Crash\, Million Dollar Baby\, and Casino Royale \n“By the age of nine\, I will have lived in more than a dozen countries\, on five continents\, under six assumed identities. I’ll know how a document is forged\, how to withstand an interrogation\, and most important\, how to disappear…” \nWild\, heart-wrenching\, and unexpectedly funny\, Nowhere Girl is an inspiring coming-of-age memoir about running for freedom against the odds. \nTo the young Cheryl Diamond\, life felt like one big adventure\, whether she was hurtling down the Himalayas in a rickety car or mingling with underworld fixers. Her family appeared to be an unbreakable gang of five. One day they were in Australia\, the next South Africa\, the pattern repeating as they crossed continents\, changed identities\, and erased their pasts. What Diamond didn’t yet know was that she was born into a family of outlaws fleeing from the highest international law enforcement agencies\, a family with secrets that would eventually catch up to all of them. \nBy the time she was in her teens\, Diamond had lived dozens of lives and lies\, but as she grew\, love and trust turned to fear and violence\, and her family—the only people she had in the world—began to unravel. She started to realize that her life itself might be a big con\, and the people she loved\, the most dangerous of all. With no way out and her identity burned so often that she had no proof she even existed\, all that was left was a girl from nowhere. \nSurviving would require her to escape\, and to do so Diamond would have to unlearn all the rules she grew up with. Like The Glass Castle meets Catch Me If You Can\, Nowhere Girl is an impossible-to-believe true story of self-discovery and triumph. \nCONTACT US for information on how to join the event or head here to register! \nCheryl Diamond is now a citizen of Luxembourg and lives between there and Rome. Her behind-the-scenes account of life as a teenage model\, Model: A Memoir\, was published in 2008. Diamond´s second book\, Naked Rome\, reveals the Eternal City through the eyes of its most fascinating people.

When Jake meets new friends Macon and Lovie\, the three embark on island adventures until one mistake changes everything. Ultimately\, Jake discovers a deep love for the island and the healing power of nature. \nMary Alice Monroe has always been captivated by the beauty and fragility of the wild habitat around her. She is the New York Times bestselling author of 27 books\, including the Beach House series: The Beach House\, Beach House Memories\, Swimming Lessons\, Beach House for Rent\, and Beach House Reunion\, On Ocean Boulevard\, and her latest book in the series The Summer of Lost and Found which will also be available for purchase/signing that day. She has been working with Mary Alice Monroe for more than a decade. The Islanders is their first book together! Angela’s husband is a middle school assistant principal. They have two children and live in Mount Pleasant\, South Carolina. \nAlso Appearing: Local Favorite Jewel Sweeney!\nSummerville’s own Jewel Sweeney will be on hand\, launching her two newest middle-grade books\, Blueberry Ballerina and More Than a Jock. Jewel will join the festivities at 11 a.m. after her appearance at the Summerville Farmers Market.\n \nFrom the More Than Surface Level series: More Than a Jock features Alex Findman\, the self-proclaimed “King of the Nerds” at Eastside High School. He is ready to take on the eleventh grade and reign as the top student in the entire school\, if he can handle AP Chemistry. Alex finds out that his chemistry class won’t just be difficult because of the material\, but also because the teacher has chosen their lab partners for them. Alex has been paired with a senior and varsity quarterback\, Brad. Alex fears having to do work for both of them and maintaining his soaring GPA. In just a few short weeks\, Alex begins to see that not all athletes are dumb meatheads like he thought. And Brad proves to him that he is more than just some jock. \nIn Blueberry Ballerina\, Lacey Hudson is a bright and beautiful high school dancer in the upstate. Her parents own a small farm with fruit and horses. Lacey loves her farm almost as much as she loves dancing. Lacey’s skills earn her a spot with a summer program in Kansas City to dance with a professional company. She soars above and beyond what anyone would ever expect of a small-town farm girl to overcome the jealousy of others. Lacey’s hard work and positive attitude bring her face to face with the best ballerinas with the worst attitudes. \nWe look forward to seeing you on this special Summer Reading day to get signed books from these amazing authors and enjoy treats\, aspiring young writers and community on Hutchinson Square… \nEnjoy more Mary Alice Monroe selections HERE

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Local Author Matt Loveland with The Artist: Faith\, Science and the Rest of Us
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating chat and Meet the Author event with local author Matt Loveland\, and get a signed copy of his new release: The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us. \nAbout the Book:\nYou matter because you were made.Created\, on purpose\, in the very image of God. And that’s not just a slogan. That’s something author Matt Loveland set out to prove. You believe the world was created. At least\, statistically you do. According to a 2018-2019 PEW Research poll\, 96% of Americans believe in a higher power. But whether it’s parents\, school\, or the media\, 100% of us are taught from an early age that faith is the trade of the superstitious; that science and Atheism are one in the same. \nMeet Matt:\nMatt Loveland came to faith in Christ because he was turned off by the irrationality of Atheism; he was drawn in by the logic and reason of God. In The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us\, he takes readers along his journey to discover a surprisingly biblical truth that the majority of Christians believe and at the same time feel they lack the tools to express: that God guided our evolution. On purpose\, and for a reason: because He loves us. And He loves you.
