SUMMARY:Booksigning: Signe Pike with The Forgotten Kingdom!
DESCRIPTION:We’re super excited to have the amazing Signe Pike grace Main Street Reads on Sunday\, December 6th for a special event and book signing. Her best-selling books have been making waves. The Forgotten Kingdom is the second in a trilogy; we’ll also have the first in the trilogy\, The Lost Queen\, on hand to be personally signed. \nRefreshments will be served\, including a special brew of spiced cider to set the mood. Let us know if you plan to attend so we set aside the book(s) for you as this event is expected to sell out. \nThe Forgotten Kingdom: AD 573. Imprisoned in her chamber\, Languoreth awaits news in torment. Her husband and son have ridden off to war against her brother\, Lailoken. She doesn’t yet know that her young daughter\, Angharad\, who was training with Lailoken to become a Wisdom Keeper\, has been lost in the chaos. As one of the bloodiest battles of early medieval Scottish history abandons its survivors to the wilds of Scotland\, Lailoken and his men must flee to exile in the mountains of the Lowlands\, while nine year-old Angharad must summon all Lailoken has taught her to follow her own destiny through the mysterious\, mystical land of the Picts. \nIn the aftermath of the battle\, old political alliances unravel\, opening the way for the ambitious adherents of the new religion: Christianity. Lailoken is half-mad with battle sickness\, and Languoreth must hide her allegiance to the Old Way to survive her marriage to the next Christian king of Strathclyde. Worst yet\, the new King of the Angles is bent on expanding his kingdom at any cost. Now the exiled Lailoken\, with the help of a young warrior named Artur\, may be the only man who can bring the warring factions together to defeat the encroaching Angles. But to do so\, he must claim the role that will forever transform him. He must become the man known to history as “Myrddin.” \n“Intrigue\, rivalry\, and magic among the mists of old Britain–The Forgotten Kingdom is an enchantment of a read! (Kate Quinn\, New York Times bestselling author). \nTake a look at the book trailers below and learn more at https://www.signepike.com/. \n \n \nSigne Pike was born in Ithaca\, NY\, and graduated from Cornell University with her Bachelor of Science in Communication. She worked as an acquisitions editor at Random House and then Penguin\, before leaving to write her first book\, Faery Tale: One Woman’s Search for Enchantment in a Modern World. Pike has spent the past ten years researching and writing about Celtic history\, myth\, folklore and tradition. Her love of history\, the great outdoors\, early medieval and ancient archeology\, and her dedication to historical accuracy has made her social media feeds an informative delight to her readers. \nSigne teaches seminars and workshops internationally on writing and publishing\, as well as on folklore and tradition. Her writing has been published by Salon\, Charleston City Paper\, Book Riot and NPR.org.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Joe Palmer with A Mariner's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, November 8th\, from noon ’til 2 pm for a very special signing with Joe Palmer\, hot on the heels of his feature appearance at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in Beaufort on Saturday! \nWe’ll have refreshments and Joe will chat about his amazing novel. Copies will be on sale at the book club price (10% off) and can be personalized by the author for yourself or the perfect holiday gift. Here’s what other amazing authors are saying about this rich and rewarding tale: \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a stunning debut: a seafaring novel rich with lush imagery and colorful characters from an exciting new voice in Southern fiction. With deft narrative skill\, the author takes the protagonist\, a cynical middle-aged mariner\, and his protege\, a troubled young man\, on a voyage of self-discovery that begins on an island in Florida and ends in an Irish fishing village. You don’t want to miss this beautifully crafted page-turner!” \n– Cassandra King\, bestselling author of Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy \n“Hard-edged and gripping.  An intriguing mix of hope and fear.  Fans of Pat Conroy’s evocative novels are going to love this stirring debut.” \n– Steve Berry\, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Protocol \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a richly rendered story scented with sea spray and filled with salty characters seeking grace\, mercy and second chances. Palmer writes with heart and authenticity\, bringing to life an unfortgettable crew worthy of the love and redemption we each hope to find in this life.” – \nNicole Seitz\, author of The Cage-Maker \n“A beautifully drawn sea-faring tale built around a marina full of lovingly flawed characters who have\, in different ways\, been floundered by life; who in rescuing each other\, manage to rescue themselves. Set in the lush beauty of the inlets\, streams and maritime world of North Florida\, A Mariner’s Tale is told with great heart and uncommon compassion by an author who knows the life of tide and salt and of the sea.” \nJanis Owen\, author of American Ghost \nPart nautical yarn\, part romance\, and part coming-of-age story\, A Mariner’s Tale is a page-turner\, but Joe Palmer’s beautiful prose slows the pace to a perfect rhythm\, allowing the reader to participate in the wonders of nature and the resilience of the human heart on a barrier island just off the northeast coast of Florida. \n—Susan Cushman\, author of Friends of the Library and Cherry Bomb\, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing

SUMMARY:Stories on the Square: Celebrating Differences on a Spectacular Saturday
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, November 7 (10:30 a.m. – Noon)\, we’ll be hosting TWO great children’s books and authors for a Spectacular Stories on the Square and Book Signing! \nJoining us will be Chris Singleton\, inspirational speaker and author of Different and Marybeth Wishart\, former teacher and author of Parker the Purple Penguin. The books will be read aloud and families can purchase copies from us\, personally signed by the authors. Both books carry excellent messages of inclusivity\, are beautifully and vibrantly illustrated\, and (ahem) make perfect holiday gifts! \nAND… our own amazing storytime reader Colleen Ratkleff will be here\, too! \nMeet Chris Singleton\nChris Singleton is a former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization as well as an inspirational speaker who has traveled the country passionately speaking to over 60\,000 students. Chris has also spread his message through various different media outlets and has been featured on ESPN’s E:60\, Sports Illustrated magazine\, CNN\, and USA Today. \nHis mother\, Sharonda Coleman Singleton\, was murdered along with eight other victims at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston\, South Carolina on June 17th 2015 by a white male who wanted to start a race-related war in the United States. Chris inspired his city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.” \nChri’s children’s book teaches kids not only to accept\, but to celebrate\, people who are different from them. Different: A Story About Loving Your Neighbor tells the story of Obinna\, a boy who moves from Nigeria to Charleston\, and finds that he doesn’t look\, sound\, or dress like his classmates. Singleton’s mother\, Sharonda\, makes an appearance in the book as Obinna’s teacher\, who reminds him that he is “beautifully and wonderfully made.” It’s a thoughtful tribute to the woman who first taught Singleton about love’s healing power. \nMeet Marybeth Wishart\nMarybeth Wishart is a retired special education teacher who has taught at both the elementary and high school level for over thirty-four years. She is a Connecticut native now living in South Carolina and trying as many new things as possible\, including publishing her first children’s book. \nParker the Purple Penguin is a story she told her own children on their way to school over thirty years ago. Its messages are as relevant now as they were then\, and birthed from the beautiful differences of her classroom kids. Marybeth would love to publish more of her children’s stories and to use Parker the Purple Penguin to support anti-bullying\, diversity\, and children’s literacy programs. \nParker the Purple Penguin doesn’t get why he is ignored and ostracized by his fellow penguins. Why don’t they like him\, when they have so many things in common? Why is he ignored by all of the other penguins just because of his purple coloring? Is there anything Parker can do to try to fit in? \nFollow Parker’s story as he confronts his differences\, and see how the other penguins change their behavior as Parker tries hard to blend in with the crowd. Parker’s tale is a journey of self-discovery as he learns to accept himself in the midst of bullying and peer pressure. \n(Hint: Fans of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will love this book!)

Legends of sunken ships\, quarantined drifters\, wartime burial grounds\, and lost Indian tribes have nicknamed the town “Coffin Island.” However\, much of the folklore has been entombed by colorful beach shops\, greasy crab shacks and bustling sunbathers. That is\, until the summer of 2019 when young fossil hunter\, Teal McHone\, becomes the last person to lay eyes on a child snatched from the shoreline on a hot July evening. Suddenly the small beach town once again lives up to its dark reputation\, and the kidnapping ignites a chain of sinister events along the South Carolina coast. Will Teal realize just what she saw in time to save the girl? \nThis coming-of-age\, romantic thriller will keep the pages turning as Teal fights to unearth all that’s hidden beneath the sands and souls on this tiny southern beach. The pull of the ocean tempers the pace of her awakening and the fates of all those caught up in its enigmatic motion. Will the strengthening tide pull the lost further out to sea or finally deliver them safely back to shore? \nMeet the Author\nLorna Hollifield was born in Asheville\, North Carolina\, but now enjoys the “salt life” outside of Charleston\, South Carolina with her family and favorite Springer Spaniel. \nHollifield began her professional writing journey as a tourism and travel blogger before finally breaking into the fiction market when Pen Name Publishing picked up her debut novel\, Tobacco Sun\, in 2017.  Since then Lorna served as President for the South Carolina Writers Association\, has been a featured speaker at numerous literary conferences\, was published in the Fall Lines literary anthology\, and spent a year as the book columnist for Skirt Magazine. \nWhen Lorna isn’t writing\, she is most likely bumming on the beach\, or exploring the never-ending South Carolina LowCountry she loves so much. Her first novel was Tobacco Sun.

To add to his good fortune\, he’s falling for Orchid Paige\, the beautiful half-Asian marketer who’s collaborated with him on a winning military campaign. SUMMARY:National Independent Bookstore Day!
DESCRIPTION:What is Independent Bookstore Day? \nIndependent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April but was pushed to August 29th this year. Every store is unique and independent\, and every party is different. For us\, we’ll have surprise giveaways and sales all day long\, so come on out and celebrate with us! \nWhy are we celebrating independent bookstores? \nIndependent bookstores are not just stores\, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent. \nIn a world of tweets and algorithms and pageless digital downloads\, bookstores are not a dying anachronism.  They are living\, breathing organisms that continue to grow and expand. In fact\, there are more of them this year than there were last year. And they are at your service.

SUMMARY:Special Interactive Mixology Event: Which Fork Do I Use with my Bourbon?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this wonderful Reader Meet Writer interactive mixology event now on July 14th at 5 p.m. – HAPPY HOUR! \nDuring their travels in bourbon country and beyond to conduct tastings and seminars\, entertainment experts Peggy Noe Stevens and Susan Reigler often heard the question\, “How do I do this in my home?” This book is their definitive answer. Which Fork Do I Use with My Bourbon? offers a step-by-step guide to hosting a successful bourbon-tasting party—complete with recipes\, photos\, and tips for beginners and experienced aficionados alike. \nFrom decorations to glassware\, this one-stop resource will guide readers from the day they mail invitations to the moment they welcome guests through the door. Alongside their favorite snack\, entrée\, dessert\, and cocktail recipes\, Stevens and Reigler offer advice on how to set up a bar\, arrange tables\, and pair recipes. Once readers are ready\, Stevens and Reigler move on to advanced pairings for the bourbon foodie and present two innovative examples of tasting parties—a bourbon cocktail soiree and\, of course\, the traditional Kentucky Derby party. Inspired by the hosting traditions of five Kentucky distilleries\, this book promises to motivate bourbon lovers to start their own bourbon-tasting traditions and to expand the expertise of longtime bourbon enthusiasts. \nPeggy Noe Stevens is founder of the Bourbon Women Association and a master bourbon taster. A lifestyle expert\, she is also a professional speaker. As a Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee\, she has planned hundreds of events globally over the last thirty years\, often working with distilleries and master distillers. \nSusan Reigler is a former restaurant critic for the Louisville Courier-Journal and a current correspondent for Bourbon+ and American Whiskey magazines. She has also authored or coauthored six books on bourbon\, including Kentucky Bourbon Country: The Essential Travel Guide and The Kentucky Bourbon Cocktail Book. \nTo shop ALL the books in the Reader Meet Writer Series\, click on the image below!

SUMMARY:Museum Art Show at Main Street Reads!
DESCRIPTION:Our own Summerville Dorchester Museum is collaborating with Main Street Reads to offer a unique Third Thursday event this month\, an art show featuring three local artists\, and a talk about Summerville area history (will be especially interesting to all you newer Summervillians!)\n\nMeet the Artists\n\nTherese Haynes: Therese won her first art show in 2nd grade. She has sold paintings of beloved pets\, cars\, and landscapes for 25+yrs in KY and MI. She moved to Summerville in 2011 offering her talent to Dorchester Summerville Museum and Crossroads Church. She was commissioned to complete two historical murals for both Museums (St George). Dorchester Co Parks and Rec commissioned Ms. Haynes for 12 works of art for Rosebrock Parks 1.5 mile hiking trail and completed a large tribute to Saul Alexander arriving in Summerville\, invited to display her complete collection by the Charleston Co Library for a Gallery Showing. She has competed Internationally for the Archdiocese of Michigan and has won juried competitions. She was last year’s People’s Choice Award and second place winner in Summerville Artist’s Guild City Gallery competition in 2018. She is currently competing in this year’s show thru Nov 30 at N Charleston Coliseum.\n\n\nDr. Ed West: Dr. West is a knowledgeable and eloquent historian for Dorchester County as well as the town of Summerville. He is often a frequent speaker as part of the museum’s series on local people and historical events.  He also consults on many of the exhibits and artifacts on display in our museum. Ed West “EW” had a truly wonderful art teacher in high school and then suppressed his muse for fifty years.  He now enjoys developing paintings depictiing aspects of American history\, particularly pertaining to Summerville. He has been influenced by N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell and thinks of himself more as an illustrator than as an artist.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank DeLoach: In summer 2000\, the Field Museum in Chicago unveiled the largest\, best preserved and most complete T-rex ever found. Frank DeLoach was working in the Paleontology prep lab on specimens from Madagascar\, but spent free time sketching the new exhibit. He was surrounded by large groups\, who wanted to ask questions about the dinosaur. Museum admin transferred Frank from Paleontology to Education\, where he was appointed “Artist-on-floor\,” a 6-week reassignment that lasted over three years. This was the beginning of a new occupation away from the sciences. Frank began painting in other locations\, such as Millennium Park\, Chicago Botanical Gardens and the Chicago Bears Soldiers Field. Frank and Andrea moved to Charleston and Frank continues to work in locations in the city and Angel Oak. Frank is presenting three small canvases of Angel Oak and the beautiful homes on the Battery. His paintings are in museums and private collections throughout the U.S.\, Asia\, and Europe. Frank is not currently represented by any galleries or studios in the Low Country. \nAs always\, we’ll also be featuring the artistic guitar stylings of Summerville’s own Michael Kaltofen\, so come enjoy some art\, books\, music and local history with us! And yes\, refreshments will be served…

But when the fairies decide to move back onto human territory\, it soon becomes clear that some will not be happy about this change. \nAs she sets out to restore the balance\, Aislin chooses a surprising group of young women to join her – girls she knows are brave and loyal\, but who don’t have the qualities of typical guards or princess confidantes. Things only get more complicated when an old foe appears\, surely up to no good. The princess knows she has the power and ingenuity to stand up for herself and her kingdom\, especially with her friends by her side – will that be enough to set things right? \nE. D. Baker is the author of many beloved books for young readers\, including The Frog Princess\, which was the inspiration for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. A classic and original fairy tale that celebrates goodness in all shapes and sizes\, More than a Princess will resonate with readers who love magic\, suspense\, girl power\, and adventure.
