SUMMARY:Booksigning: Hilary Rose Bodiford's Under the Influence
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, October 9th between 4 and 6 pm (yes\, during Flowertown Festival!) for a book-signing with Hilary Rose Bodiford\, celebrating her stunning debut\, Under the Influence. \nThree female influencers are caught in a net built by the dopamine rush that comes with every alert and ding. That is until one of them ends up dead. \nInspired by the author’s real-life experiences in the social media blogging world as @byhilaryrose\, Hilary Bodiford’s first novel explores the dark side of this enigmatic industry in which so many women are mysterious CEOs. \nIngenious mean girls\, emphasis on appearances and wealth\, and the constant need to display a picture-perfect life are realities many bloggers have faced. Under the Influence exposes how these pressures can affect mentally\, not only the content creator\, but those who are watching. \nAnd they are always watching… \nHilary Rose Bodiford is a writer and social media influencer based in Mount Pleasant\, SC. Beginning her blogging life as a southern girl with a love for etiquette and classic style\, she has since expanded her brand to include her true passion; storytelling. Combining her love of mystery with her inside knowledge of the illusive influencer industry\, she creates a world that has merged the two to develop a story so riveting no one will be able to put it down. When Hilary isn’t writing\, she enjoys life with her husband Brent\, two black labs\, and soon-to-be son! \n

Grady Hendrix\, author of Horrorstor and The Southern Bookclub’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is back on top of the review lists with his latest release\, The Final Girl Support Group. \nRESERVE YOUR SPOT/BOOK NOW BY EMAILING US – It’s free to attend but we need to know how many awesome books to have on hand – We expect this to be a sell-out and want to make sure we have enough books for all!!! \nTHE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER; A Good Morning America Buzz Pick \n“The horror master…puts his unique spin on slasher movie tropes.”-USA Today\n \nA can’t-miss summer read\, selected by The New York Times\, Oprah Daily\, Time\, USA Today\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, CNN\, LitHub\, BookRiot\, Bustle\, Popsugar and the New York Public Library \nIn horror movies\, the final girls are the ones left standing when the credits roll. They made it through the worst night of their lives…but what happens after? \nLike his bestselling-novel The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires\, Grady Hendrix’s latest is a fast-paced\, frightening\, and wickedly humorous thriller. From chain saws to summer camp slayers\, The Final Girl Support Group pays tribute to and slyly subverts our most popular horror films—movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre\, A Nightmare on Elm Street\, and Scream. \nLynnette Tarkington is a real-life final girl who survived a massacre. For more than a decade\, she’s been meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a support group for those who survived the unthinkable\, working to put their lives back together. Then one woman misses a meeting\, and their worst fears are realized—someone knows about the group and is determined to rip their lives apart again\, piece by piece. \nBut the thing about final girls is that no matter how bad the odds\, how dark the night\, how sharp the knife\, they will never\, ever give up. SUMMARY:Booksigning: Roger Newman is Back with the Launch of Will O’ the Wisp: Madness\, War\, and Recompense
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special booksigning with Charleston’s own Roger B. Newman\, with his newly released\, Will O’ the Wisp: Madness\, War\, and Recompense. \nPolarizing\, fire-eating discourse\, propaganda\, and aversion to reason bred secession madness in Charleston\, S.C.\, and sold rebellion to a population with virtually nothing to gain and everything to lose. \nMen who should have known better and had become inured to the abomination of human bondage failed to step up. \nAs Southern nationalists raced into Civil War\, blockade runner Jack Holmes and wealthy Charleston shipping magnate\, George A. Trenholm\, do what they can to sustain their city and the Confederacy. Their actions and experiences result in a sweeping adventure story played out on both the land and sea. With the outcome of the war obvious\, Jack Holmes and George Trenholm conspire to steal the Confederate gold as Jefferson Davis flees a burning Richmond. \nThe two men accept their responsibility for what proved to be a misguided and tragic rebellion and seek to adapt and redeem themselves in a post-slavery South. \nRoger Newman\, M.D. is a novelist\, academic Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist\, and member of the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Dr. Newman is a tenured Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maas Endowed Chair for Reproductive Sciences. Dr. Newman grew up in Columbia\, S.C. and attended Seton Hall University in South Orange\,  New Jersey. He returned to South Carolina to attend MUSC and stayed in Charleston for his residency training in Ob-Gyn. He followed his residency with a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of California\, San Francisco and the Cardiovascular Research Institute. Dr. Newman then returned to the academic faculty at MUSC where he continues to practice. \nRoger is married and has three exceptional children. He and his wife Diane live on East Bay Street in Charleston\, South Carolina. Besides medicine and writing\, his other passion is sports and his other “job” is coaching the women’s varsity basketball team (Raptors) at the Academic Magnet High School.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Herbie Goes to School by Sherrika Myers
DESCRIPTION:It’s the culmination of the Sweetest Week Ever in Summerville and before the festival begins Saturday afternoon\, we have a sweet signing for families: Children’s book author Sherrika Myers will be joining us to sign copies of the newly released Herbie Goes to School! \nHerbie’s family has moved to another state\, and bought a new home\, and now Lil Herbie must go to a new school. He’s afraid to make new friends and doesn’t want to go. He fears all the kids will laugh at him because he stutters\, but he finally goes to school\, and soon he realizes it is not as bad as he thought. \nThe thing that you often fear the most turns out to be just in your own mind. Whatever kids are dealing with\, whether it be stuttering\, low self-esteem\, or anything else\, each child’s voice matters\, and they should always know they are special too. Herbies Goes to School is book two in the Lil Herbie Series\, aimed at children ages 4-10. \nSherrika Myers is the founder of Every 1 Voice Matters\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit designed to help children break down communicative and social barriers\, such as stuttering\, bullying\, and low self-esteem\, to improve their quality of life. As a national speaker and certified life coach\, Myers travels the country spreading her message of hope. www.every1voicematters.org www.lilherbie.com

SUMMARY:Sweetest Third Thursday Ever
DESCRIPTION:On the third Thursday of each month Historic Downtown Summerville transforms into a special marketplace featuring local entertainment\, craft vendors and artisans\, to complement the extended hours of shops and restaurants. \n\n\n\nHere at Main Street Reads we’re offering you up not one but TWO amazing authors that night – Syril Kline (author of the award-winning Shakespeare’s Changeling) and A.F. Winter\, author of the soon-to-be-released Man in the Pandemic. \n\n\n\n1st place winner of the Chaucer Award for Historical Fiction\, Shakespeare’s Changeling is a controversial historical novel: Charged in 1616 by the Earls of Pembroke and Montgomery to edit a folio of Shakespeare plays\, writer Ben Jonson races against time to uncover the missing manuscripts by seeking out his former nemesis\, the bedridden William Shaxper. But far more worrisome is that the Earl of Oxford’s daughter\, the Countess of Montgomery\, wants the folio published as a tribute to her father. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWitty\, intriguing and suspenseful\, Syril Levin Kline’s controversial novel calls into question everything you ever thought you knew about the Bard by exploring the irony of a creative genius forced to hide behind the identity of another. Kline proudly joins Mark Twain\, Walt Whitman\, Samuel Taylor Coleridge\, James Joyce\, Charles Dickens and others in their skepticism about the Shakespeare authorship. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMan in the Pandemic offers an intimate snapshot into a recent history we all know too well: Sent to work from home and in isolation from the onset of the pandemic\, Frank Smith is losing control over his carefully constructed environment. \n\n\n\nSoon forced into unemployment\, his hyper-focus turns towards what he can control: walking endless circles in his home\, conserving toilet paper and battling pests as he struggles to hold onto his sanity. Smith tries to make sense of social unrest and systemic racism\, natural disasters and climate change as he faces personal demons of loneliness\, fear and a lifetime of regrets. Simply told yet deceptively complex\, this dark comedy will resonate with anyone questioning their place in the universe as we navigate a world gone mad…

SUMMARY:Mystery and Mimosas Anyone?
DESCRIPTION:How ’bout sparking up the start of August with some cozy mysteries and a mimosa? (Or just the OJ or just the bubbly if you prefer!) Mystery authors Linda Lovely and Dorothy St. James will BOTH be with us on Sunday\, August 1st at 2 pm to debut their newest books and bring on the dog days of Summerville summer: \nMANAGING AN HOA CAN BE MURDER: Murder victims in separate Lowcountry homeowner associations appear to have had only two things in common—they antagonized neighbors and their dead bodies were posed to shock. Are HOA feuds provoking these murders? Kylee Kane\, a retired Coast Guard investigator\, agrees to help her friend’s HOA management company find the answer. After uncovering decades-old links between the murder victims\, Kylee IDs the killer’s next target. Can she foil the third act in the killer’s death-as-theater game or will she be the next corpse on display? \nLinda Lovely has spent most of her career working in PR and advertising—an early introduction to penning fiction. With Neighbors Like These is Lovely’s ninth mystery/suspense novel. Whether she’s writing cozy mysteries\, historical suspense or contemporary thrillers\, her novels share one common element—smart\, independent heroines. Humor and romance also sneak into every manuscript. Her work has earned nominations for a number of prestigious awards\, ranging from RWA’s Golden Heart for Romantic Suspense to Killer Nashville’s Silver Falchion for Best Cozy Mystery. \nLinda lives on a lake in Upstate South Carolina with her husband\, and enjoys swimming\, tennis\, gardening\, long walks\, and\, of course\, reading To learn more\, visit www.lindalovely.com \nAnd of course many of you know Dorothy St. James\, who’s had not one but TWO wonderful signings at Main Street Reads in the past\, including headlining the town’s Friday night Dessert Walk in 2019! Her newest entry (love this cover!) is The Broken Spine: When small-town assistant librarian Tru Beckett sets up a secret book room in her newly modernized library\, she discovers that protecting the printed word is harder than she’d ever imagined. In fact\, it’s murder. \nWe’ll have plenty of copies of her popular Chocolate Shop mysteries on hand as well! \nDorothy St. James is the alter-ego of award-winning multi-published author\, Dorothy McFalls. She enjoys writing in several different genres. Her works have been nominated for many awards including: Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award\, Reviewers International Organization Award\, National Reader’s Choice Award\, CataRomance Reviewers’ Choice Award\, and The Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10! Award. Reviewers have called her work: “amazing”\, “perfect”\, “filled with emotion”\, and “lined with danger.”

SUMMARY:Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May: Summer Reading Spectacular!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, June 26th for an amazing event featuring authors Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May\, debuting their middle-grade novel\, The Islanders\, available for pre-order now at Main Street Reads! \nTeachers\, students\, librarians and reading groups can also access a curriculum guide HERE. \nThe morning will feature an intro to these wonderful authors as well as free treats\, AND an open mic for middle graders to share their own writing! If you’re a middle school student who wants on stage that day\, drop us an email at mainstreetreads@gmail.com to get on the list\, or have your teacher put you on the list! Open mic readers will be given up to five minutes to read their essay\, poem or short story\, staying on key themes from The Islander: friendship\, inclusion and conservation. Students selected to read will also receive a gift from the authors! \nCo-written with first-time author and friend Angela May\, The Islanders introduces Monroe’s trademark passion for the environment to a new generation of readers as they follow eleven-year-old Jake and the summer he’s forced to spend on tiny Dewees Island with his grandmother. \nEverything in his life is turned upside down: Jake does not know anyone\, the island is a nature sanctuary with no cars or paved roads\, no stores or restaurants\, and to make matters worse\, Jake’s grandmother doesn’t believe in cable or the internet. When Jake meets new friends Macon and Lovie\, the three embark on island adventures until one mistake changes everything. Ultimately\, Jake discovers a deep love for the island and the healing power of nature. \nMary Alice Monroe has always been captivated by the beauty and fragility of the wild habitat around her. In particular\, the coastal southern landscape became a strong and important focus in many of her novels. She is the New York Times bestselling author of 27 books\, including the Beach House series: The Beach House\, Beach House Memories\, Swimming Lessons\, Beach House for Rent\, and Beach House Reunion\, On Ocean Boulevard\, and her latest book in the series The Summer of Lost and Found which will also be available for purchase/signing that day. Monroe’s debut middle-grade fiction series\, The Islanders\, releases June 15\, 2021. \nHer bestselling novel The Beach House is also a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie\, starring Andie McDowell\, Minka Kelly\, and Chad Michael Murray. \nMonroe is also an active conservationist and supports numerous conservation-focused organizations. Her work includes serving as a board member emeritus for the South Carolina Aquarium and a state-certified member of the Island Turtle Team. She lives on in Isle of Palms\, South Carolina\, which is a source of inspiration for many of her books. \nAngela May is the founder of May Media and PR and a former award-winning television news journalist who helps promote great books and share important community stories as a media specialist. She has been working with Mary Alice Monroe for more than a decade. The Islanders is their first book together! Angela’s husband is a middle school assistant principal. They have two children and live in Mount Pleasant\, South Carolina. \nAlso Appearing: Local Favorite Jewel Sweeney!\nSummerville’s own Jewel Sweeney will be on hand\, launching her two newest middle-grade books\, Blueberry Ballerina and More Than a Jock. Jewel will join the festivities at 11 a.m. after her appearance at the Summerville Farmers Market.\n \nFrom the More Than Surface Level series: More Than a Jock features Alex Findman\, the self-proclaimed “King of the Nerds” at Eastside High School. He is ready to take on the eleventh grade and reign as the top student in the entire school\, if he can handle AP Chemistry. Alex finds out that his chemistry class won’t just be difficult because of the material\, but also because the teacher has chosen their lab partners for them. Alex has been paired with a senior and varsity quarterback\, Brad. Alex fears having to do work for both of them and maintaining his soaring GPA. In just a few short weeks\, Alex begins to see that not all athletes are dumb meatheads like he thought. And Brad proves to him that he is more than just some jock. \nIn Blueberry Ballerina\, Lacey Hudson is a bright and beautiful high school dancer in the upstate. Her parents own a small farm with fruit and horses. Lacey loves her farm almost as much as she loves dancing. Lacey’s skills earn her a spot with a summer program in Kansas City to dance with a professional company. She soars above and beyond what anyone would ever expect of a small-town farm girl to overcome the jealousy of others. Lacey’s hard work and positive attitude bring her face to face with the best ballerinas with the worst attitudes. \nWe look forward to seeing you on this special Summer Reading day to get signed books from these amazing authors and enjoy treats\, aspiring young writers and community on Hutchinson Square… \nEnjoy more Mary Alice Monroe selections HERE

SUMMARY:An Adventurous Third Thursday and Booksigning!
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to an outstanding Third Thursday this month. Not only will we have Mike Kaltofen on hand\, and not only will the town square be sporting an Adventure theme (complete with zip line!)\, but we’ll be hosting an adventure of our own: the authors of the debut memoir 100 Days in Vietnam. will join us for an adventurous book launch! \nDon’t miss this chance to meet co-authors Joseph and Matthew Tallon and get a personally signed copy of this much-anticipated work! \n“Joe Tallon scratched and clawed his way through Army training\, ultimately finding himself in Vietnam by 1972. His resiliency and strength to overcome shine through in this poignant survival story told in tandem by father and son.” – Mike Krzyzewski\, Head Coach\, Duke University\, West Point Class of 1969 \n“100 Days in Vietnam offers readers both a rare window on the final days of our painful national odyssey in Vietnam and a remarkable record of an individual’s determined quest to honor a fallen comrade.” – Ken Burns\, Filmmaker and Director of The Vietnam War\, The Civil War\, and many other films \nAbout 100 Days in Vietnam\nAs American troops continue their steady exodus on the last day of their ground war in Vietnam\, Lieutenant Joe Tallon is shot down by an enemy missile. Forced to eject at a dangerously low altitude from their OV-1 Mohawk\, Joe and his tactical observer\, Specialist-5 Daniel Richards\, land in the flaming wreckage. Lieutenant Tallon survives but Specialist Richards does not. Stateside\, Lieutenant Tallon begins to heal and proceed with his life but the loss of his tactical observer is never far from his mind. Forty years later\, Joe embarks on a quest to bring recognition to the sacrifice of Daniel Richards and secure a Purple Heart for his family. \nPainstakingly recreated from wartime letters and remembrances and contextualized by contemporary news accounts\, 100 Days in Vietnam is a collaboration between Joe and his son Matt-also an Army veteran. Here we experience the war through the emotions of the man who survived it: the drudgery and monotony of airfield life\, the heartache of a newlywed missing his wife\, the terror of combat missions\, the agony of injury and rehabilitation\, and the bittersweet relief from the completion of his final mission to bring recognition to his fallen comrade. \nAbout the Authors\nJoseph F. Tallon is a retired US Army lieutenant colonel who served from 1969 to 2007. Trained as a composite Army aviator in rotary and fixed-wing aircraft\, he flew the OV-1 Mohawk during Vietnam\, transitioning to Army intelligence after the war. A selection of his awards and decorations during his military service includes the Purple Heart\, the Meritorious Service Medal\, the Air Medal (2x)\, the Army Commendation Medal\, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry\, the Vietnam Wounded in Action Medal\, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon completion of a master’s degree in education and supervision at The Citadel in 1981\, Joe taught high school social studies. Retired from teaching\, he has been an active volunteer and fundraiser for the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. Joe has been married to his wife\, Martha Anne\, for fifty years and has two sons and six grandchildren. \nMatthew A. Tallon is a former US Army transportation officer who served primarily in overseas duty assignments for five years and completed his active-duty commitment as a captain. Matt is a graduate of Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a teaching certification. After completion of his military service\, Matt returned to Durham Public Schools to teach high school US history and civics. After graduating from Harvard with a master’s degree in education policy and management\, Matt currently serves as the senior project manager for the Public Education Leadership Project\, a joint education initiative between the Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Matt has been married to his wife\, Lindsay\, for the past twenty years and has three sons.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Signe Pike with The Forgotten Kingdom!
DESCRIPTION:We’re super excited to have the amazing Signe Pike grace Main Street Reads on Sunday\, December 6th for a special event and book signing. Her best-selling books have been making waves. The Forgotten Kingdom is the second in a trilogy; we’ll also have the first in the trilogy\, The Lost Queen\, on hand to be personally signed. \nRefreshments will be served\, including a special brew of spiced cider to set the mood. Let us know if you plan to attend so we set aside the book(s) for you as this event is expected to sell out. \nThe Forgotten Kingdom: AD 573. Imprisoned in her chamber\, Languoreth awaits news in torment. Her husband and son have ridden off to war against her brother\, Lailoken. She doesn’t yet know that her young daughter\, Angharad\, who was training with Lailoken to become a Wisdom Keeper\, has been lost in the chaos. As one of the bloodiest battles of early medieval Scottish history abandons its survivors to the wilds of Scotland\, Lailoken and his men must flee to exile in the mountains of the Lowlands\, while nine year-old Angharad must summon all Lailoken has taught her to follow her own destiny through the mysterious\, mystical land of the Picts. \nIn the aftermath of the battle\, old political alliances unravel\, opening the way for the ambitious adherents of the new religion: Christianity. Lailoken is half-mad with battle sickness\, and Languoreth must hide her allegiance to the Old Way to survive her marriage to the next Christian king of Strathclyde. Worst yet\, the new King of the Angles is bent on expanding his kingdom at any cost. Now the exiled Lailoken\, with the help of a young warrior named Artur\, may be the only man who can bring the warring factions together to defeat the encroaching Angles. But to do so\, he must claim the role that will forever transform him. He must become the man known to history as “Myrddin.” \n“Intrigue\, rivalry\, and magic among the mists of old Britain–The Forgotten Kingdom is an enchantment of a read! (Kate Quinn\, New York Times bestselling author). \nTake a look at the book trailers below and learn more at https://www.signepike.com/. \n \n \nSigne Pike was born in Ithaca\, NY\, and graduated from Cornell University with her Bachelor of Science in Communication. She worked as an acquisitions editor at Random House and then Penguin\, before leaving to write her first book\, Faery Tale: One Woman’s Search for Enchantment in a Modern World. Pike has spent the past ten years researching and writing about Celtic history\, myth\, folklore and tradition. Her love of history\, the great outdoors\, early medieval and ancient archeology\, and her dedication to historical accuracy has made her social media feeds an informative delight to her readers. \nSigne teaches seminars and workshops internationally on writing and publishing\, as well as on folklore and tradition. Her writing has been published by Salon\, Charleston City Paper\, Book Riot and NPR.org.
