SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Signing! Girl From the Red Rose Motel
DESCRIPTION:Screenshot\n\n\n\nCome party with your neighbors in downtown Summerville on Third Thursday\, and stop by Main Street Reads to get a personally signed copy of the award-winning Girl From the Red Rose Motel by Susan Beckham Zurenda! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSusan will be on hand that evening to meet fans and sign books and tell you more about her great work – don’t miss the fun! \n\n\n\nImpoverished high school junior Hazel Smalls and privileged senior Sterling Lovell would never ordinarily meet. But when both are punished with in-school suspension\, Sterling finds himself drawn to the gorgeous\, studious girl seated nearby\, and an unlikely relationship begins. \n\n\n\nSet in 2012 South Carolina\, the novel interlaces the stories of Hazel\, living with her homeless family in the rundown Red Rose Motel; Sterling\, yearning to break free from his wealthy parents’ expectations; and recently widowed Angela Wilmore\, their stern but compassionate English teacher. Hazel hides her homelessness from Sterling until he discovers her cleaning the motel’s office when he goes with his slumlord father to unfreeze the motel’s pipes one morning. With her secret revealed\, their relationship deepens. \n\n\n\nAngela-who has her own struggles in a budding romance with the divorced principal-offers Hazel the support her family can’t provide. Navigating between privilege and poverty\, vulnerability and strength\, all three must confront what they need from themselves and each other as Hazel gains the courage to oppose boundaries and make a bold\, life-changing decision at novel’s end. \n\n\n\nGripping and richly drawn\, The Girl from the Red Rose Motel explores the complex bonds between adults and teenagers and the power of the families we both inherit and create. Inspired by the author’s experiences teaching in a South Carolina high school\, the novel is also an unflinching\, authentic look at the challenges faced by America’s public school teachers and the struggles of the thousands of homeless children in motels who live\, precariously and almost invisibly\, amid the nation’s most affluent communities.

SUMMARY:Bookstore Romance Day: Meet Laurie Devore and Marissa Eller!
DESCRIPTION:August 17th is National Bookstore Romance Day and we have TWO very special authors with brand new books joining us from 2-5 p.m. \n\n\n\nPLUS – grab one or both these books and get a “Blind Date with a Book” FREE! We’ll also have treats all day long and some special romance sales. \n\n\n\nScreenshot\n\n\n\nHere’s more info on these wonderful reads – we’ll see you on Main Street! \n\n\n\nLaurie Devore’s The Villain Edit\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Villain Edit is a bit of everyone’s favorite Emily Henry (Happy Place) meets The Bachelor! This sexy dramedy has all the fun and feels\, beginning with a cynical romance novelist\, Jacqueline Matthis. Her career has tanked and she’s ditched the bright lights of New York City for her more affordable South Carolina hometown. \n\n\n\nDesperate\, Jac dreams up a comeback plan: to be a contestant on the 1\, the most watched reality dating show in the world. Jac is a romance writer after all. She knows how to pull off a meet-cute and create a spicy plotline better than most of us. \n\n\n\nBut Jac soon discovers that while she may have just met the love of her life\, the producers are turning her into the show’s villain. \n\n\n\nGood villains make good TV\, right? On set\, Jac quickly establishes herself as a front-runner for bachelor Marcus’s heart\, but she’s shocked to discover who’s actually pulling the strings. How was she to know that Henry Foster\, her last one-night stand before the show\, was actually a longtime producer on the 1? Henry is just as horrified…but they can’t seem to keep their hands off each other. \n\n\n\nLaurie Devore\n\n\n\nJac knows that she’s getting the villain edit. And they say there’s no such thing as bad publicity\, but as Jac’s secret plan begins crumbling around her\, she’s not so sure. What happens if Marcus chooses her? Worse\, what happens if her affair with Henry comes to light? What if\, in trying to save her career\, she instead will further wreck her mess of a life? \n\n\n\nSmart\, funny\, and sexy\, with a lowcountry twist\, anyone who has ever secretly rooted for the villain (or has been one) will love it. Grab now for a perfect beach read; get it personalized by Laurie in August! \n\n\n\nMarissa Eller’s Joined at the Joints\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarissa’s book is Joined at the Joints and it’s a delightful read for young readers as well as those of us with a few more books under our belts. When baking-obsessed Ivy meets a boy who shares her rare diagnosis\, sparks fly outside of the kitchen for the first time in her life. \n\n\n\nChronically ill seventeen-year-old Ivy has stayed inside baking all summer. Pies are better than people\, and they don’t trigger her social anxiety. So when her mom and sister\, who also suffer from chronic illness\, cook up their plan to get Ivy out of the house and into a support group\, Ivy doesn’t expect to participate much. \n\n\n\nAnd she doesn’t expect Grant. Grant is class-clown cute\, perfectly-messy-hair cute\, will-always-text-you-back cute. There’s an instant connection between them. And he has the same chronic illness as her\, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. He can empathize with Ivy’s world. \n\n\n\nMarissa Eller\n\n\n\nBut understanding her pain isn’t the same as taking it away\, as much as she wishes he could because it’s getting worse. Ivy has always tried her best to seem “normal\,” but between symptom management\, new treatment plans\, and struggling with medical self-advocacy\, being sick feels more and more difficult. Even her bestie starts drifting away and Ivy begins to wonder\, what if Grant does\, too? \n\n\n\nMarissa Eller serves up a sweet\, satisfying romcom that tackles the reality of chronic illness–and coming-of-age milestones from friend breakups to first kisses—with humor and heart. Readers will fall for Eller’s voice in this sweet debut that offers all the right ingredients. It’s a recipe for a delicious read!

Sam Jenkins\, a Black man\, is found covered in blood\, kneeling over the body. In a state already roiling with racial tension\, this is not only a murder case\, but a powder keg. A haunting cold case–Two young women are murdered on quiet Edisto Beach\, an hour southeast of Walterboro\, and the killer disappears without a trace. Thirty-four years later the mystery remains unsolved. Could there be a connection to Stander’s case? A killer who’s watching–Stander takes on Jenkins’s defense\, but he’s up against a formidable solicitor with powerful allies. Worse\, his client is hiding a bombshell secret. When Addie Stone reopens the cold case\, she discovers more long-buried secrets in this small town. Would someone kill again to keep them? \n\n\n\nIdeal for fans of mystery\, suspense\, and thrillers in the vein of Karin Slaughter’s Pretty Girls and Stacy Willingham’s A Flicker in the Dark\, as well as for readers who followed the high-profile Murdaugh murder trial\, held in the same small town as in When Cicadas Cry. \n\n\n\nGET YOUR TIX HERE – JUST $18.99 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCaroline Cleveland credits growing up in the rural South and its quieter way of life for her lifelong passion for books and storytelling. As an adolescent\, she devoured classics like Old Yeller and The Yearling\, discovered Agatha Christie and Steven King in her teenage years\, and\, later\, was mesmerized reading thrillers by authors including John Grisham\, Michael Connelly\, Karin Slaughter and Mary Kubica. \n\n\n\nHer dedication to the written word led her to law school at the University of South Carolina\, where she earned her degree in 1991. She is certified by the South Carolina Supreme Court as a specialist in labor and employment law and is the founding partner of Cleveland & Conley\, LLC. \n\n\n\nCaroline draws on her rich and varied life experience working in the law for her writing. She elaborates\, “Law school students are warned the first day that the law is a jealous mistress\, and there is a reason for that. But I have always made time to read for pleasure. Eventually\, it dawned on me that I\, too\, have entertaining and powerful stories to tell. As a writer\, I gravitate toward mystery and suspense\, as I cannot resist a character who has a dark secret or is wrestling with inner demons. I have lived in the South all my life\, so my stories inevitably come from a Southern perspective\, featuring deceptively peaceful small towns and strong\, complex characters who rely on their Southern sense of values.”

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Signing: American Wild by Marissa Hale
DESCRIPTION:On Third Thursday\, we’ll be celebrating one of our own! A few years back\, Marissa Hale was workshopping this beautiful piece of historical fiction with us. Now American Wild has been birthed and is ready to meet the world! Based on true events\, this is the inspiring story of a French widow thrust alone into the New World after her husband’s murder… \n\n\n\nAmerica. L’Amérique. A foreign land threatens to take French-born Vittorie LeClerc’s love during a revolution and ultimately succeeds during questionable peace. She watches his last breath evaporate into nothing\, leaving her to survive with only her will\, a knife and a few gold buttons. \n\n\n\nWith the help of a mysterious man of the woods and other pioneers\, Vittorie navigates uncharted territory\, language barriers\, fractious warring nations\, suspicious settlers\, underground slave kings\, and a burgeoning new government. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased on true events and historical figures during and after the Revolutionary War\, American Wild is the unforgettable story of a woman’s odyssey into significance\, a searchlight into heart\, mind\, history\, and spirit. \n\n\n\nMeet Marissa\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnamored of the natural world and the human experience in it\, Marissa Hale has traveled to eleven countries on three continents and visited thirty-eight of the fifty United States. She learned French at a young age\, studied in Paris\, France at the American University there\, and graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Communications. \n\n\n\nMarissa began researching the story of Frenchman’s Knob shortly after her own move to Hart County\, Kentucky in December 2007. Fresh off the road from touring with her sisters in her band and feeling for the first time like she was terrible at everything she tried to do in her new life\, she felt lost\, ill-equipped\, and alone. The band had broken up\, her dyed-red hair seemed misplaced among her sweet Amish neighbors\, and she was practically the only woman within a 50-mile radius who wasn’t married with children or a fabulous cook. \n\n\n\nWhen a neighbor delivered Florence Edwards Gardiner’s little green book of her father’s (Cyrus Edwards) stories about the landscape and its people and casually said\, “I’ve always thought someone should make a movie out of the second story\, the one about Frenchman’s Knob…” Marissa was hooked. Because of her previous experience in France and knowledge of the language\, the highest peak in Kentucky being named “Frenchman’s Knob” and the accompanying story captured her attention. \n\n\n\nMarissa knew storytelling. She could research. And she did. \n\n\n\nBefore becoming a historical fiction author with American Wild\, Marissa wrote songs and screenplays\, performed for crowds of thousands\, and taught elementary school art. In addition to writing\, she now owns a general contracting company and makes her home in South Carolina with her husband\, children\, and grandchildren.

Magnetic\, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot\, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one\, the careful one\, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year\, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe\, and asks her to room together\, something in Margot can’t say no–something daring\, or starved\, or maybe even envious. \n\n\n\nAnd so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls\, Lucy\, the ringleader; Sloane\, the sarcastic one; and Nicole\, the nice one\, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. It’s a year that finds Margot finally coming out of the shell she’s been in since the end of high school\, when her best friend Eliza died three weeks after graduation. Margot and Lucy have become the closest of friends\, but by the middle of their sophomore year\, one of the fraternity boys from the house next door has been brutally murdered… and Lucy Sharpe is missing without a trace. \n\n\n\nFrom the author of A Flicker in the Dark and All the Dangerous Things comes a tantalizing thriller about the nature of friendship and belonging\, about loyalty\, envy\, and betrayal–another gripping novel from an author quickly becoming the gold standard in psychological suspense. \n\n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKETS HERE! SUMMARY:Meet the Author! Angie Mizzell Signing "Girl in the Spotlight"
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a special book signing on December 9th when TV journalist Angie Mizzell will be at Main Street Reads to sign her fascinating new memoir\, Girl in the Spotlight. Especially excited about this one\, readers\, since Angie and I had the privilege of serving on Charleston’s Center for Women board together – and she’s fantastic! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy age 25\, Angie Mizzell was a morning news anchor at a top-rated television station. She had married her college sweetheart\, and scenes from their wedding day ran on the evening news. She’d achieved everything her mom had wanted for her and what she thought she wanted for herself. \n\n\n\nBut after signing with an agent who promised to take her career to the next level\, Angie began to realize that a future in the spotlight would not dim a past filled with childhood trauma and loss. As a television journalist\, she’d made a living by exploring and reporting other people’s stories; it was time to examine her own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her coming-of-age memoir\, “Girl in the Spotlight\,” Angie shares a heartfelt and hopeful story of arriving at a crossroads\, getting lost in the darkness\, learning to let go\, and finding her way back home. \n\n\n\nAngie Mizzell is a writer\, a mom and a former local TV news anchor. She’s the author of “Hello Friday\,” a weekly newsletter on Substack where she explores ways to feel at home where we live\, in our relationships\, in our work and within. She lives in West Ashley with her husband and their three children.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Reading Jane with Susannah Kennedy!
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be a part of this eastern leg of Susannah’s tour – come join in the fun and enjoy refreshments and some stimulating conversation. The book will be available to be signed by the author that day! \n\n\n\nReading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir and the book tour “Surviving the Narcissistic Mother” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the estimation of narcissism and its impact on children grows\, more people are identifying as the children of such an upbringing. They have been raised by a parent whose sense of self-importance overshadowed the child\, the child existing rather as an extension of a parental self that lacks empathy and often exploits their child. It’s estimated that nearly 60 million people are damaged by such relational patterns. Children of such parents are vulnerable to poor self-esteem\, lack of boundaries\, and co-dependence. \n\n\n\nHaving emerged on the other side of this phenomenon\, Susannah Kennedy\, author of Reading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir has launched her book tour along the East Coast. The tour includes a stop at Main Street Reads in Summerville!\, where she’ll sign copies as well as address her path to healing. It wasn’t an easy one\, and might not have been achieved at all had Susannah’s mother not inexplicably taken her own life at age 75. When Susannah discovered 45 years of Jane’s diaries\, she had a portal into the narrative her mother created and lived. \n\n\n\nSusannah avoided plunging in for three years\, until she was driven to do so\, to understand finally the mystery her mother presented. What emerges is Susannah’s own story in contrast to her mother’s\, and ultimately leads her to finally shake off the constraints set by Jane’s need to control both the narrative and her daughter. \n\n\n\nPrevious events on the West Coast leg of the tour have demonstrated that Susannah is not alone. Nearly 5 percent or 1 in 200 people suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the sons and daughters are showing up at book events — to take from Susannah’s story of healing the hope they might finally understand and heal their own. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Jane: Surviving the Narcissistic Mother Eastern Seaboard Tour will encompass 12 cities in October and November 2023: Boston and Gloucester\, Massachusetts; Newport\, Rhode Island; Owego and Woodstock\, New York; Washington D.C.; Montrose and Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Charlotte\, North Carolina; Hilton Head Island and Summerville\, South Carolina; and Savannah\, Georgia. For details on dates\, times\, and locations\, please visit www.sibyllinepress.com or www.susannahkennedy.com. Main Street Reads at 115 S. Main Street in Summerville will host Susannah on November 19th from 1-3 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist Susannah Kennedy was born in India and raised in the United States. Later\, she traveled extensively on her own\, first in Italy\, and then through the Middle East and India\, settling for two years in Egypt before becoming a reporter in Dallas\, Texas. At Oxford University\, she specialized in Arab culture and politics\, receiving her DPhil in social anthropology. She and her psychoanalyst husband lived and worked in Germany\, raising three children in a thatched-roof farmhouse in the countryside outside Hamburg. Her mother’s suicide and its aftermath brought them back to California in 2017. They now reside in Marin County.

SUMMARY:Spirit Week for Our Four-Legged Friends In Need
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps one of the most valuable\, yet undervalued members of our community is Dorchester Paws. This is Summerville’s non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to providing shelter\, care\, and support for homeless animals in Dorchester County. As owners of many rescue animals ourselves\, we can tell you they’re doing an incredible job with the very limited resources at their disposal. \n\n\n\nBut now they need OUR help. Due to constant flooding\, evacuations (see right)\, and too many animals in crisis\, Dorchester Paws requires a larger\, higher-ground facility. The organization is now raising funds\, assisted by a $1.5 million state grant\, to construct a state-of-the-art shelter\, furthering the organization’s mission to provide the highest level of care and support for homeless animals and the community. \n\n\n\nThe grant\, provided by the State of South Carolina\, represents a significant investment in the welfare of animals and the community as a whole. It’s a crucial start\, but more is needed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe new animal shelter\, (plan shown above) which will be a cornerstone of Dorchester Paws’ operations\, will not only benefit the animals under their care but also offer various services and resources to the residents of Dorchester County. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe grant will support private funding efforts and that’s where WE all come in. Lots of small donations will make up the bulk of the funding needed\, so we’re jumping in for a Spirit Week in honor of our four-legged friends. A percentage of ALL our sales\, from Sunday\, November 19th\, through Small Business Saturday\, November 25th\, will go directly to Dorchester Paws. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, we’ll have a donation box in the store that will be up until the end of the month\, when we’ll present a grand total to Dorchester Paws. We encourage you to give of yourselves\, and in honor of loved people and pets\, to help this very worthy cause. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFYI: The new animal shelter will be equipped with modern facilities to provide comfort\, care\, and support to the animals awaiting adoption. It will feature expanded kennel space\, a public spay & neuter clinic\, a dedicated adoption center\, and educational resources to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership. \n\n\n\nDorchester Paws will be working closely with the State of South Carolina and our local community to ensure that the new shelter meets the highest standards of animal care and welfare. The organization is excited about the positive impact this new facility will have on the lives of animals and the Dorchester County community. \n\n\n\nThanks on behalf of Dorchester Paws for your support – let’s show ’em readers DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
