SUMMARY:Special Interactive Mixology Event: Which Fork Do I Use with my Bourbon?
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this wonderful Reader Meet Writer interactive mixology event now on July 14th at 5 p.m. – HAPPY HOUR! \nDuring their travels in bourbon country and beyond to conduct tastings and seminars\, entertainment experts Peggy Noe Stevens and Susan Reigler often heard the question\, “How do I do this in my home?” This book is their definitive answer. Which Fork Do I Use with My Bourbon? offers a step-by-step guide to hosting a successful bourbon-tasting party—complete with recipes\, photos\, and tips for beginners and experienced aficionados alike. \nFrom decorations to glassware\, this one-stop resource will guide readers from the day they mail invitations to the moment they welcome guests through the door. Alongside their favorite snack\, entrée\, dessert\, and cocktail recipes\, Stevens and Reigler offer advice on how to set up a bar\, arrange tables\, and pair recipes. Once readers are ready\, Stevens and Reigler move on to advanced pairings for the bourbon foodie and present two innovative examples of tasting parties—a bourbon cocktail soiree and\, of course\, the traditional Kentucky Derby party. Inspired by the hosting traditions of five Kentucky distilleries\, this book promises to motivate bourbon lovers to start their own bourbon-tasting traditions and to expand the expertise of longtime bourbon enthusiasts. \nPeggy Noe Stevens is founder of the Bourbon Women Association and a master bourbon taster. A lifestyle expert\, she is also a professional speaker. As a Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee\, she has planned hundreds of events globally over the last thirty years\, often working with distilleries and master distillers. \nSusan Reigler is a former restaurant critic for the Louisville Courier-Journal and a current correspondent for Bourbon+ and American Whiskey magazines. She has also authored or coauthored six books on bourbon\, including Kentucky Bourbon Country: The Essential Travel Guide and The Kentucky Bourbon Cocktail Book. \nTo shop ALL the books in the Reader Meet Writer Series\, click on the image below!

SUMMARY:Museum Art Show at Main Street Reads!
DESCRIPTION:Our own Summerville Dorchester Museum is collaborating with Main Street Reads to offer a unique Third Thursday event this month\, an art show featuring three local artists\, and a talk about Summerville area history (will be especially interesting to all you newer Summervillians!)\n\nMeet the Artists\n\nTherese Haynes: Therese won her first art show in 2nd grade. She has sold paintings of beloved pets\, cars\, and landscapes for 25+yrs in KY and MI. She moved to Summerville in 2011 offering her talent to Dorchester Summerville Museum and Crossroads Church. She was commissioned to complete two historical murals for both Museums (St George). Dorchester Co Parks and Rec commissioned Ms. Haynes for 12 works of art for Rosebrock Parks 1.5 mile hiking trail and completed a large tribute to Saul Alexander arriving in Summerville\, invited to display her complete collection by the Charleston Co Library for a Gallery Showing. She has competed Internationally for the Archdiocese of Michigan and has won juried competitions. She was last year’s People’s Choice Award and second place winner in Summerville Artist’s Guild City Gallery competition in 2018. She is currently competing in this year’s show thru Nov 30 at N Charleston Coliseum.\n\n\nDr. Ed West: Dr. West is a knowledgeable and eloquent historian for Dorchester County as well as the town of Summerville. He is often a frequent speaker as part of the museum’s series on local people and historical events.  He also consults on many of the exhibits and artifacts on display in our museum. Ed West “EW” had a truly wonderful art teacher in high school and then suppressed his muse for fifty years.  He now enjoys developing paintings depictiing aspects of American history\, particularly pertaining to Summerville. He has been influenced by N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell and thinks of himself more as an illustrator than as an artist.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrank DeLoach: In summer 2000\, the Field Museum in Chicago unveiled the largest\, best preserved and most complete T-rex ever found. Frank DeLoach was working in the Paleontology prep lab on specimens from Madagascar\, but spent free time sketching the new exhibit. He was surrounded by large groups\, who wanted to ask questions about the dinosaur. Museum admin transferred Frank from Paleontology to Education\, where he was appointed “Artist-on-floor\,” a 6-week reassignment that lasted over three years. This was the beginning of a new occupation away from the sciences. Frank began painting in other locations\, such as Millennium Park\, Chicago Botanical Gardens and the Chicago Bears Soldiers Field. Frank and Andrea moved to Charleston and Frank continues to work in locations in the city and Angel Oak. Frank is presenting three small canvases of Angel Oak and the beautiful homes on the Battery. His paintings are in museums and private collections throughout the U.S.\, Asia\, and Europe. Frank is not currently represented by any galleries or studios in the Low Country. \nAs always\, we’ll also be featuring the artistic guitar stylings of Summerville’s own Michael Kaltofen\, so come enjoy some art\, books\, music and local history with us! And yes\, refreshments will be served…

SUMMARY:Booksigning: E.D. Baker with The Power of a Princess
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on November 9th for a special booksigning with beloved children’s author E.D. Baker\, highlighting the brand new release of The Power of a Princess\, an adventurous tale about a princess who is more than what she seems — and a kingdom whose fate rests in her hands. \nAislin is more than just a princess. Born to a fairy king and pedrasi queen\, she’s strong\, smart\, and brave\, with magical gifts she’s only beginning to discover. Aislin has spent her whole life keeping her family’s gifts hidden from the non-magic folk who surround her kingdom\, and is shocked to find out the humans knew about these enchantments all along. But when the fairies decide to move back onto human territory\, it soon becomes clear that some will not be happy about this change. \nAs she sets out to restore the balance\, Aislin chooses a surprising group of young women to join her – girls she knows are brave and loyal\, but who don’t have the qualities of typical guards or princess confidantes. Things only get more complicated when an old foe appears\, surely up to no good. The princess knows she has the power and ingenuity to stand up for herself and her kingdom\, especially with her friends by her side – will that be enough to set things right? \nE. D. Baker is the author of many beloved books for young readers\, including The Frog Princess\, which was the inspiration for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. A classic and original fairy tale that celebrates goodness in all shapes and sizes\, More than a Princess will resonate with readers who love magic\, suspense\, girl power\, and adventure.

Rich in character\, keen insight\, and local color\, this heartwarming collection celebrates the surprising power of story to bring us together.” —Cassandra King\, author of the best-selling novels The Sunday Wife and The Same Sweet Girls and the upcoming memoir Tell Me a Story. \n“Friends of the Library is a love letter to southern readers and writers that also manages to tackle serious social issues. In a world of Twitter and twaddle\, Susan Cushman gives us a timely reminder of the simple pleasures of your local library. Find this book and check it out!” —Jim Dees\, author of The Statue and the Fury and host of the Thacker Mountain Radio Show \nAbout the Book\nWhen Adele Covington becomes an author in her sixties\, she goes on a book tour to speak to the Friends of the Library groups in ten small towns in her home state of Mississippi. Chasing her personal demons through the Christ-haunted South of her childhood\, Adele befriends an eclectic group of wounded people and decides to tell their stories. From Eupora to Meridian\, from a budding artist with an abusive husband to a seven-year-old with a rare form of cancer\, each story contains elements of hope and healing and honors the heart\, soul\, and history of the Magnolia State.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Kathryn Smith Celebrates the Launch of Gertie!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, August 31st for the Summerville launch celebration of: \nGertie: The Fabulous Life of Gertrude Sanford Legendre\, Heiress\, Explorer\, Socialite\, Spy \nGertie lived a 20th century life full of fun\, adventure\, derring-do and drama. Read all about her Gilded Age girlhood\, explorations on three continents\, hijinks on the French Riviera with the Lost Generation\, work for the OSS – the original American spy agency – during World War II\, and her imprisonment by the Nazis. And that’s less than half the story! \nGertrude Sanford Legendre was a woman whose adventurous life spanned the twentieth century\, beginning in Aiken\, S.C. in 1902 and ending at her plantation outside Charleston in 2000. She was a daring and fearless woman whose adventures included being the first American woman in uniform held as a POW by the Germans during World War II. \nShe also partied on the Riviera with the Murphys\, the Fitzgeralds and Harpo Marx in the 1920s\, undertook numerous challenging expeditions for natural history museums (and lead four) and befriended some of the greatest personalities of the 20th century\, including Dr. Albert Schweitzer\, General George S. Patton\, Lilly Pulitzer\, and Bing Crosby. In her later years\, she became an ardent conservationist\, fighting for habitat preservation on the South Carolina coast and leaving her 7\,000-acre plantation in a conservation easement\, a place where “the beasts can grow old and die.” \n“Gertie” is a rollicking read about a woman who was not afraid to say yes to life! \nKathryn Smith is author of the critically acclaimed biography of Marguerite LeHand\, FDR’s private secretary and advisor\, “The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand\, FDR and the Untold Story of the Partnership that Defined a Presidency” (Simon & Schuster\, 2016). \nPublisher: Evening Post Books Release date: August 15\, 2019

SUMMARY:Prince of Scribes: Booksigning
DESCRIPTION:New York Times best-selling writer Pat Conroy (1945–2016) inspired a worldwide legion of devoted fans numbering in the millions\, but none are more loyal to him and more committed to sustaining his literary legacy than the many writers he nurtured over the course of his 50-year writing life. In sharing their stories of Conroy\, his fellow writers honor his memory and advance our shared understanding of his lasting impact on 20th- and 21st-century literary life in and well beyond the American South. \nFeatured writers for this discussion are co-editor Jonathan Haupt and novelists Stephanie Austin Edwards and John Warley. Each author in this collection shares a slightly different view of Conroy. Through their voices\, a vibrant\, multifaceted portrait of him comes to life and sheds new light on the writer and the man. Sales of Our Prince of Scribes support the educational mission of the nonprofit Conroy Center. \nPRAISE FOR OUR PRINCE OF SCRIBES\n“A moving tribute to the legacy of one of the South’s brightest lights.”—Garden & Gun’s Talk of the South \n“Our Prince of Scribes isn’t just a collection of homages but also a delightful introduction to Conroy’s vast and talented circle of talented friends.”—Washington Post \n“More than 60 writers–from Pulitzer Prize winners to Conroy relatives to Barbra Streisand–fill Our Prince of Scribes with personal stories about [Pat Conroy’s] impact…. The result is a moving\, entertaining read as genuine as the icon himself.”—Charleston Magazine \n“In these essays\, you’ll meet a man who was troubled\, tormented\, angry\, scathing\, outrageous\, hilarious\, tender\, noble\, brave\, and generous beyond measure. But most of all\, you’ll meet a man who damn-well knew how to love. And thanks to the devoted efforts of co-editors Jonathan Haupt and Nicole Seitz\, and the work of 67 very fine writers\, his legion of fans will come to love Pat Conroy even more than they already do.”—Lowcountry Weekly \nABOUT THE FEATURED WRITERS\nStephanie Austin Edwards\, a former dancer and costumer\, is a novelist\, writing teacher\, and author consultant. Her twenty-two-year career in theater began in San Diego and moved her to New York City. She worked on Broadway and in film and on television with such talents as Liza Minnelli\, Michael Jackson\, Lauren Bacall\, Woody Allen\, Martin Scorsese\, Hal Prince\, Stephen Sondheim\, Bill Cosby\, and Michael Bennett. \nLater\, she returned to her roots in the South Carolina lowcountry where she now facilitates writers’ groups\, teaches writing workshops\, and volunteers at the Pat Conroy Literary Center. Her debut novel\, What We Set in Motion\, won a Best Submission Award at the Atlanta Writer’s Club Conference. \nJonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center\, the founding director of the annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival\, and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press. SUMMARY:Launch Party: Gardenia Duty by Kathleen Varn
DESCRIPTION:Charleston’s own Kathleen Varn will be at Main Street Reads to celebrate the much anticipated launch of Gardenia Duty! We’ll also have copies of Kat’s first novel\, Ameera Unveiled\, on hand for sale and signing. This begins a six month long tour for Kathleen that will culminate with her appearance at the Pulpwood Queens national bookclub conference in Texas in January\, 2020. \nAbout Gardenia Duty\nIn 1957 jobs are scarce in rural Ashland\, Alabama. Bobby Higgins is facing life decisions; his family’s farm struggles and threat of the draft hangs over 18-year-old males as the Cold War rumbles in the distance. Bobby heads off to boot camp\, vowing to provide for his family from his pay. Between shore and sea duty\, he leaves broken hearts in every port. When his own heart is stolen by Rose\, he’s shocked to learn that she comes with four daughters\, a package deal he’s unsure he wants. But when Rose disappears\, Bobby finds her and persuades her to marry him. \nSomehow they navigate their way through the trials of marriage and parenting as he fulfills his patriotic career and his promise to raise four willful daughters. In the spring of 2004\, his daughters are brought together by grief. They forge new bonds\, sharing their joys\, losses\, regrets\, and ultimately family secrets that will seal all their fates…if they can summon the courage to report for duty. \nAbout Kathleen Varn\nKat Varn\nKat Varn’s connection to Charleston began as the oldest daughter in a military family. Her love affair with words manifested when she turned four and taught herself to read. As she grew older\, books and reading were an escape\, but journaling eventually led her to her first novel\, Ameera Unveiled. This year she was honored to be invited to participate in the 2019 American Lung Association Oxygen Ball’s Lowcountry Dancing with the Stars competition\, which she WON!
