SUMMARY:Booksigning: Rebecca Dwight Bruff's Trouble the Water
DESCRIPTION:Join us between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, November 24th when Rebecca Dwight Bruff will be signing American Fiction award-winning Trouble the Water. Stick around for a discussion of the book afterwards as the featured Pulpwood Queen book club read this month! \n\nDeeply moving and illuminating\, TROUBLE THE WATER reveals the little-known real-life story of Robert Smalls. Born enslaved before the Civil War\, Smalls witnesses great privilege and immense suffering alongside his owner’s daughter and the dangerous son of a firebrand secessionist. \nAt the age of twelve\, he’s sent to work in Charleston\, where he loads ships and learns to pilot a cotton steamer. When the war erupts and his cotton steamer becomes a confederate warship\, Robert attempts a harrowing escape to freedom for himself and the people he loves. \n\n\n“With this stunning debut novel\, Rebecca Bruff establishes herself as an exciting new voice in historical fiction.” – Cassandra King Conroy \n\nRebecca Bruff heard the story of Robert Smalls on her first visit to South Carolina. She was so captivated that she left her job and moved across the country to research and write this novel. Bruff earned her Bachelors degree in education (Texas A&M) and Master and Doctorate degrees in theology (Southern Methodist University). In 2017\, she was a scholarship recipient for the prestigious Key West Literary Seminar. She volunteers at the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort\, South Carolina. She’s published non-fiction\, plays a little tennis\, travels when she can\, and loves life in the lowcountry with her husband and an exuberant golden retriever. Learn more at rebeccabruff.com

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Joe Palmer with A Mariner's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, November 8th\, from noon ’til 2 pm for a very special signing with Joe Palmer\, hot on the heels of his feature appearance at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in Beaufort on Saturday! \nWe’ll have refreshments and Joe will chat about his amazing novel. Copies will be on sale at the book club price (10% off) and can be personalized by the author for yourself or the perfect holiday gift. Here’s what other amazing authors are saying about this rich and rewarding tale: \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a stunning debut: a seafaring novel rich with lush imagery and colorful characters from an exciting new voice in Southern fiction. With deft narrative skill\, the author takes the protagonist\, a cynical middle-aged mariner\, and his protege\, a troubled young man\, on a voyage of self-discovery that begins on an island in Florida and ends in an Irish fishing village. You don’t want to miss this beautifully crafted page-turner!” \n– Cassandra King\, bestselling author of Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy \n“Hard-edged and gripping. An intriguing mix of hope and fear. Fans of Pat Conroy’s evocative novels are going to love this stirring debut.” \n– Steve Berry\, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Protocol \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a richly rendered story scented with sea spray and filled with salty characters seeking grace\, mercy and second chances. Palmer writes with heart and authenticity\, bringing to life an unfortgettable crew worthy of the love and redemption we each hope to find in this life.” – \nNicole Seitz\, author of The Cage-Maker \n“A beautifully drawn sea-faring tale built around a marina full of lovingly flawed characters who have\, in different ways\, been floundered by life; who in rescuing each other\, manage to rescue themselves. Set in the lush beauty of the inlets\, streams and maritime world of North Florida\, A Mariner’s Tale is told with great heart and uncommon compassion by an author who knows the life of tide and salt and of the sea.” \nJanis Owen\, author of American Ghost \nPart nautical yarn\, part romance\, and part coming-of-age story\, A Mariner’s Tale is a page-turner\, but Joe Palmer’s beautiful prose slows the pace to a perfect rhythm\, allowing the reader to participate in the wonders of nature and the resilience of the human heart on a barrier island just off the northeast coast of Florida. \n—Susan Cushman\, author of Friends of the Library and Cherry Bomb\, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing

SUMMARY:Stories on the Square: Celebrating Differences on a Spectacular Saturday
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, November 7 (10:30 a.m. – Noon)\, we’ll be hosting TWO great children’s books and authors for a Spectacular Stories on the Square and Book Signing! \nJoining us will be Chris Singleton\, inspirational speaker and author of Different and Marybeth Wishart\, former teacher and author of Parker the Purple Penguin. The books will be read aloud and families can purchase copies from us\, personally signed by the authors. Both books carry excellent messages of inclusivity\, are beautifully and vibrantly illustrated\, and (ahem) make perfect holiday gifts! \nAND… our own amazing storytime reader Colleen Ratkleff will be here\, too! \nMeet Chris Singleton\nChris Singleton is a former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization as well as an inspirational speaker who has traveled the country passionately speaking to over 60\,000 students. Chris has also spread his message through various different media outlets and has been featured on ESPN’s E:60\, Sports Illustrated magazine\, CNN\, and USA Today. \nHis mother\, Sharonda Coleman Singleton\, was murdered along with eight other victims at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston\, South Carolina on June 17th 2015 by a white male who wanted to start a race-related war in the United States. Chris inspired his city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.” \nChri’s children’s book teaches kids not only to accept\, but to celebrate\, people who are different from them. Different: A Story About Loving Your Neighbor tells the story of Obinna\, a boy who moves from Nigeria to Charleston\, and finds that he doesn’t look\, sound\, or dress like his classmates. Singleton’s mother\, Sharonda\, makes an appearance in the book as Obinna’s teacher\, who reminds him that he is “beautifully and wonderfully made.” It’s a thoughtful tribute to the woman who first taught Singleton about love’s healing power. \nMeet Marybeth Wishart\nMarybeth Wishart is a retired special education teacher who has taught at both the elementary and high school level for over thirty-four years. She is a Connecticut native now living in South Carolina and trying as many new things as possible\, including publishing her first children’s book. \nParker the Purple Penguin is a story she told her own children on their way to school over thirty years ago. Its messages are as relevant now as they were then\, and birthed from the beautiful differences of her classroom kids. Marybeth would love to publish more of her children’s stories and to use Parker the Purple Penguin to support anti-bullying\, diversity\, and children’s literacy programs. \nParker the Purple Penguin doesn’t get why he is ignored and ostracized by his fellow penguins. Why don’t they like him\, when they have so many things in common? Why is he ignored by all of the other penguins just because of his purple coloring? Is there anything Parker can do to try to fit in? \nFollow Parker’s story as he confronts his differences\, and see how the other penguins change their behavior as Parker tries hard to blend in with the crowd. Parker’s tale is a journey of self-discovery as he learns to accept himself in the midst of bullying and peer pressure. \n(Hint: Fans of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will love this book!)

SUMMARY:Launch Party and Booksigning: The Ocean at Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday evening\, October 23rd when author Lorna Hollifield will be at Main Street Reads to celebrate the launch of her second novel\, The Ocean at Night. \nTwo Ways to Participate!\nLorna will be at Main Street Reads from 5:30 to 7:30. She’ll talk a bit about the book on Zoom and to gathered guests (social distance rules will apply)\, followed by book signing. Refreshments will be served. \nTo Join Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83330080974?pwd=cW9VYVUxVVVHYkJpcFBtd2Vpa3NxUT09\nMeeting ID: 833 3008 0974 Passcode: 744155 \nAbout the Book\nThey’re all lost: a teenage girl from the wrong side of the sand\, a grieving father with a chip on his shoulder\, a ne’er-do-well mother addicted to men\, and a six-year-old girl last seen happily swinging her red sand bucket. \nFolly Beach is a barrier island near Charleston\, South Carolina made famous for making people disappear. Legends of sunken ships\, quarantined drifters\, wartime burial grounds\, and lost Indian tribes have nicknamed the town “Coffin Island.” However\, much of the folklore has been entombed by colorful beach shops\, greasy crab shacks and bustling sunbathers. That is\, until the summer of 2019 when young fossil hunter\, Teal McHone\, becomes the last person to lay eyes on a child snatched from the shoreline on a hot July evening. Suddenly the small beach town once again lives up to its dark reputation\, and the kidnapping ignites a chain of sinister events along the South Carolina coast. Will Teal realize just what she saw in time to save the girl? \nThis coming-of-age\, romantic thriller will keep the pages turning as Teal fights to unearth all that’s hidden beneath the sands and souls on this tiny southern beach. The pull of the ocean tempers the pace of her awakening and the fates of all those caught up in its enigmatic motion. Will the strengthening tide pull the lost further out to sea or finally deliver them safely back to shore? \nMeet the Author\nLorna Hollifield was born in Asheville\, North Carolina\, but now enjoys the “salt life” outside of Charleston\, South Carolina with her family and favorite Springer Spaniel. \nHollifield began her professional writing journey as a tourism and travel blogger before finally breaking into the fiction market when Pen Name Publishing picked up her debut novel\, Tobacco Sun\, in 2017. Since then Lorna served as President for the South Carolina Writers Association\, has been a featured speaker at numerous literary conferences\, was published in the Fall Lines literary anthology\, and spent a year as the book columnist for Skirt Magazine. \nWhen Lorna isn’t writing\, she is most likely bumming on the beach\, or exploring the never-ending South Carolina LowCountry she loves so much. Her first novel was Tobacco Sun.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: God's Little Bird: A War Orphan's Story with Laura Knotts
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome local author Laura Knotts on Saturday\, September 12\, 2020\, discussing her book God’s Little Bird: A War Orphan’s Story. \n75 years ago\, hundreds of thousands of Baltic citizens were caught in the bloody crossfire of the Soviets and Nazis and forced to flee their homelands. Lithuanian citizens had suffered brutal persecution during earlier Soviet and German occupations\, and by the end of the second Soviet Occupation\, only 1 million Lithuanians remained out of a population of 3 million. \nSimilarly\, in what became known as the Lithuanian Diaspora\, only one in three of those who fled Lithuania as refugees survived. These 60\,000 surviving refugees were detained and sheltered in German Displaced Persons Camp and became known by the name of “God’s Little Birds.” \nThis is the remarkable story of one such “little bird\,” a young boy named Joseph\, who on a cold October day in 1944 was suddenly wrenched from everything he knew and held dear and forced to flee for his life\, leaving his mother\, brothers\, and sisters behind surrounded by mined fields and under a sky black with bombs. However\, like the story of the biblical Joseph who was forced into exile far from his homeland and family\, God had His hand on this little Lithuanian boy\, and in His providential plan\, \nHe brought Joseph safely through a journey of exile\, loss\, persecution\, and despair into a new life in America where by God’s grace\, Joseph’s story was transformed into one of belonging\, prosperity\, hope\, restoration\, and purpose.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Marie Crow with Abigail and Her Pet Zombie
DESCRIPTION:So excited to announce that author Marie Crow will join us March 21st at Main Street Reads…\n\nMarie Crow weaves her stories around the human element of the horror versus the “monsters” themselves. She believes that the real horror of life does not come from the expected\, but from the unexpected responses of the human nature and what depths of trauma a person has to survive in certain situations.\n\nShe began writing The Risen series when feeling that the popular genre was slipping too deep into the realm of pure “slasher” and forgetting what the horror of zombies can mean for a story.\nNow with her children’s series launched\, Marie hopes to use her favorite “monster” as a teaching tool to inspire children to understand that not everything that looks scary\, is scary. With Abigail and Her Pet Zombie series\, Marie hopes to further spread her love for all things “that go bump in the night” with small children\, showing them that it’s okay to be different and to embrace those same differences in those around them. \n \n \n \n

Certain points about the Civil War are discussed and the African American hero Robert Smalls is introduced. SUMMARY:Book Signing: Soul Sprints with John Gibson
DESCRIPTION:Soul Sprints is a football tale of love\, friendship\, tolerance\, and the ties of family and community that bind\, even in the unceasing presence of bitterness and prejudice in post-9/11 America.: \nLake Barrow\, Florida is a small\, central Florida farming community that prides itself on loving three things: faith\, family\, and the mighty Spartans of Sims County High. The tiny Bible-belt town is also home to a long-standing feud between two of its most prominent families\, the Gills and the Danforths. \nJayce Leonard is a hometown football hero from Lake Barrow who is all too familiar with the Gill-Danforth controversy. After achieving success as a college quarterback at a small university\, Jayce is called home in 2003 to coach at his alma mater at the age of twenty-four\, making him the youngest high school head coach in the state of Florida. However\, he soon finds himself squarely in the middle of his hometown’s checkered history again as he seeks to start a family and successfully lead his beloved Spartans on the gridiron. Alongside him is his college teammate and best friend\, Soul Rasheed. "Coach Soul\," as he is known to the team\, is a Muslim and former favorite receiving target of Jayce's whose enthusiasm and charisma quickly endear him to the players. However\, Soul's presence in Lake \nBarrow – along with his faith – soon generates fresh strife in the midst of the ongoing discord that has plagued Jayce’s small town for years. \nJoin us for the booksigning and lively discussion. Refreshments will be served!

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Featuring Nicole Musap and Heather Lyn Mann!
DESCRIPTION:February 15th (yep\, the day after Valentine’s Day!) will be a special day at Main Street Reads when we host TWO authors and two wonderful books! \nNicole Musap is a Certified Holistic Health and Life Coach. Her book\, Feel It. Heal It. Let It Go: Taking Power Back From Your Pain shares her experiences growing up in an atmosphere where addiction\, denial\, lying\, and keeping secrets was the norm. Within the chapters\, you will be guided through a journey that taps upon eye-opening topics. This book offers three revelations of action to transform behavior from self-defeating to life-enhancing. Feeling the pain\, healing from the pain and then letting go of that pain. With anecdotes and usable insights drawn from personal experiences\, Nicole shares ideas that have helped her overcome pain\, fear and confusion and how to approach life’s challenges with confidence\, love\, courage\, and even humor. \n \nNicole empowers women to shed what no longer serves them through transformational coaching and personal growth workshops. When Nicole is not coaching or writing\, you can probably find her on her purple beach cruiser with an iced coffee sitting in the cupholder. Nicole and her husband are blessed with three tiny humans and love to experience the world’s immense beauty by traveling abroad. \nSpeaking of traveling\, our other featured author\, Heather Lyn Mann\, was a battle–weary environmental advocate in Madison\, Wisconsin\, struggling over what to do about climate change when she and her husband decided to explore the Atlantic on a small sloop. Her memoir\, Ocean of Insight: A Sailor’s Voyage from Despair to Hope\, spans six years living afloat through disasters and discoveries—life-threatening storms\, the boredom of isolation\, societies on the brink of extinction\, sinking ships\, colorful Caribbean characters\, near collisions\, a pirate scare\, and more. Throughout\, the ocean becomes Mann’s teacher\, transforming her with uncompromising lessons on how to harmonize with natural order\, the exact moments and ways to let in fearlessness\, resilience\, happiness\, impermanence\, balance\, compassion\, skillful action\, and beginner’s mind. \nHer suspenseful\, sometimes hilarious\, and always heart–warming journey of body and mind\, shaped by ancient Buddhist teachings\, entertains as it charts reality’s depths and danger zones so arm–chair adventurers\, spiritual seekers\, and the climate concerned can navigate tumultuous waters and arrive together on the shore of planetary well–being. \nIn other words – we’re looking forward to a most excellent day of thoughtful discussion and brilliant insights from these two authors! \nNicole and Heather’s books will both be available for sale and signing and refreshments will be served!

Here we find their joys and loves\, as well as their trials and tribulations as they struggle with doubt and illness while championing their beliefs and often confronting racism in American society during the civil rights era. \n\nJC Sasser’s work has been compared by other great southern authors to Flannery O’Connor\, and Sasser says she’s been a huge influence on her own work\, so this will be a VERY engaging discussion!\n\nPraise for Good Things Out of Nazareth\n“An epistolary group portrait that will appeal to readers interested in the Catholic underpinnings of O’Connor’s life and work… These letters by the National Book Award–winning short story writer and her friends alternately fit and break the mold. Anyone looking for Southern literary gossip will find plenty of barbs… But there’s also higher-toned talk on topics such as the symbolism in O’Connor’s work and the nature of free will.”—Kirkus Reviews\n \n“A fascinating set of Flannery O’Connor’s correspondence . . . The compilation is highlighted by gems from O’Connor’s writing mentor\, Caroline Gordon. . . . While O’Connor’s milieu can seem intimidatingly insular\, the volume allows readers to feel closer to the writer\, by glimpsing O’Connor’s struggles with lupus\, which sometimes leaves her bedridden or walking on crutches\, and by hearing her famously strong Georgian accent in the colloquialisms she sprinkles throughout the letters. . . . This is an important addition to the knowledge of O’Connor\, her world\, and her writing.”—Publishers Weekly\n\n\nPraise for Gradle Bird\n\n“J.C. Sasser takes us on a romp of an adventure through the life\, eyes and heart of Gradle Bird‘s dark and twisted\, but loving and hilarious world in rural Georgia. Gradle Bird reads like it was written\, in collaboration\, by the ghosts of Flannery O’Connor and Florence King\, while finishing off a bottle of Battlefield Bourbon. And truth is\, if it had been the fruit of the ghosts of two of the South’s darkest and wittiest writers\, we could only hope that they would continue the collaboration. But we’re in luck as J.C. Sasser is alive and well and\, hopefully\, will be telling her stories for years to come. It’s a wonderful story\, a wonderful book.” – Robert Hicks\, author of The Widow of the South and The Orphan Mother \n“Think Flannery O’Connor riffing Elmore Leonard and you get some sense of this wildly inventive\, picaresque novel that stretches the boundaries of what it means to be family and what it costs to love and be loved. But don’t get me wrong. J.C. Sasser writes in her own lyrical style\, weaving often tragicomic events into a mosaic of sometimes hallucinogenic wonder. Her characters seemed swept up in an arc of ever-pending disaster. And yet in the unforgettable presence of Gradle Bird herself\, the book’s 16-year-old chief protagonist\, you learn how redemption can stumble into our lives at the unlikeliest of times from the unlikeliest of places.” –Ken Wells\, author of Meely LaBauve \n“Anyone who doesn’t fall in love with Gradle Bird\, the character\, might want to stop by an Urgent Care facility for an EKG. Anyone not totally mesmerized by the world depicted in Gradle Bird\, the novel\, might as well forfeit his or her Human Being ID card. J.C. Sasser’s invented a complex\, big-hearted\, dirt-road-smart protagonist surrounded by hilarious one-of-a-kind characters (and a ghost). Absurd\, yet utterly believable. Southern\, yet universal. I’m jealous.” –George Singleton\, author of The Half-Mammals of Dixie\nThis special event takes place between 2 and 5 p.m. — The spirited discussion will begin promptly at 3 p.m. and refreshments will be served! Following their conversation\, JC and Ben will take questions from the audience.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Priscilla K. Garatti
DESCRIPTION:We have a special event planned for you to welcome December! On December 1st (also our singing bookseller Hannah Rose’s birthday!) we’ll be hosting Charleston author Priscilla K. Garatti! \nPriscilla K. Garatti is the author of a collection of reflective essays\, On A Clear Blue Day; a novel\, Missing God; and a memoir\, An Ocean Away. \nAn Ocean Away\nTwo stories dramatically entwine through this memoir of a woman’s journey to regain lost love and a lost self. \nThirty-five years ago\, a teenage girl boards an ocean liner and meets the Italian boy who becomes the love of her life. Through a series of synchronous events she finds him again and must confront the painstaking choices it will take to love him again. \nMissing God\nWhen Emily King finds herself jolted into early widowhood after her husband’s heart attack\, she cannot seem to find her bearings in a once predictable world. Desperate for any bit of consolation to soothe her raw heart\, she seeks the solace of the Sea Islands that stretch out along the coastline of South Carolina. \nDuring one her sojourns\, she meets a winsome child named Ocean. The little boy and his mother enter Emily’s life bearing gifts—warmth\, laughter\, gritty strength and the friendship of an African man named Cannon to whom Emily finds herself surprisingly drawn. \nThese four unlikely companions help each other navigate the treacherous terrain of grief\, bound together even more tightly as they seek to rescue Ocean when he falls into dangerous hands. \nOn A Clear Blue Day\nPeople often feel alone and isolated in our performance-based culture. They have a deep desire to be validated and accepted for who they are. To be loved—to know the love of a God who does not reject them. \nWith lyrical prose and a blend of lush images\, Priscilla moves you through the seasons of the year taking on such topics as regret\, vulnerability\, loneliness\, intimacy and imperfection. In each essay she weaves a divine thread through the quotidian. \nMeet Priscilla\nIn 2018\, Priscilla was selected as an emerging writer in South Carolina\, with both fiction and non-fiction works appearing in anthologies compiled by Z Publishing. On A Clear Blue Day won an Enduring Light medal in the 2017 Illumination Book Awards. And In 2019\, Z Publishing once again featured Priscilla as one of America’s emerging authors in their literary fiction anthology for The Carolinas. Look for her latest book\, The Light By Which We See in February 2020. Priscilla currently resides with her Italian husband near a tidal creek in Charleston\, South Carolina. Find her at priscillakgaratti.com and on Instagram and Twitter.

Not only does she know the dead man\, he’s a relation . . . of sorts. Soon she’s juggling a murder investigation and a rash of burglaries that may have been committed by the mythical Edisto Santa—a holiday secret Santa\, who may have taken a page from Robin Hood’s book and begun robbing from the tourist rich and giving to the local poor. \nSince the suspects for both crimes are Edisto residents\, no matter how delicately Callie treads\, this holiday season will pit Callie against her beloved Edisto and leave her feeling like the Grinch\, Scrooge\, and Old Man Potter rolled into one. But she has no choice. Murder trumps Santa. This year Callie is making a list and checking it twice. \nPraise for C. Hope Clark: “A sparkling Edisto Island setting\, a flawed heroine\, a riveting mystery.”—Karen White\, New York Times bestselling author. \nHope Clark’s books have been honored as winners of the Epic Award\, Silver Falcion Award\, the Daphne du Maurier Award. \n\nJoin us for this very special event and celebrate one of Summerville’s own!

SUMMARY:Booksigning: E.D. Baker with The Power of a Princess
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on November 9th for a special booksigning with beloved children’s author E.D. Baker\, highlighting the brand new release of The Power of a Princess\, an adventurous tale about a princess who is more than what she seems — and a kingdom whose fate rests in her hands. \nAislin is more than just a princess. Born to a fairy king and pedrasi queen\, she’s strong\, smart\, and brave\, with magical gifts she’s only beginning to discover. Aislin has spent her whole life keeping her family’s gifts hidden from the non-magic folk who surround her kingdom\, and is shocked to find out the humans knew about these enchantments all along. But when the fairies decide to move back onto human territory\, it soon becomes clear that some will not be happy about this change. \nAs she sets out to restore the balance\, Aislin chooses a surprising group of young women to join her – girls she knows are brave and loyal\, but who don’t have the qualities of typical guards or princess confidantes. Things only get more complicated when an old foe appears\, surely up to no good. The princess knows she has the power and ingenuity to stand up for herself and her kingdom\, especially with her friends by her side – will that be enough to set things right? \nE. D. Baker is the author of many beloved books for young readers\, including The Frog Princess\, which was the inspiration for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog. A classic and original fairy tale that celebrates goodness in all shapes and sizes\, More than a Princess will resonate with readers who love magic\, suspense\, girl power\, and adventure.
