SUMMARY:Mystery and Mimosas Anyone?
DESCRIPTION:How ’bout sparking up the start of August with some cozy mysteries and a mimosa? (Or just the OJ or just the bubbly if you prefer!) Mystery authors Linda Lovely and Dorothy St. James will BOTH be with us on Sunday\, August 1st at 2 pm to debut their newest books and bring on the dog days of Summerville summer: \nMANAGING AN HOA CAN BE MURDER: Murder victims in separate Lowcountry homeowner associations appear to have had only two things in common—they antagonized neighbors and their dead bodies were posed to shock. Are HOA feuds provoking these murders? Kylee Kane\, a retired Coast Guard investigator\, agrees to help her friend’s HOA management company find the answer. After uncovering decades-old links between the murder victims\, Kylee IDs the killer’s next target. Can she foil the third act in the killer’s death-as-theater game or will she be the next corpse on display? \nLinda Lovely has spent most of her career working in PR and advertising—an early introduction to penning fiction. With Neighbors Like These is Lovely’s ninth mystery/suspense novel. Whether she’s writing cozy mysteries\, historical suspense or contemporary thrillers\, her novels share one common element—smart\, independent heroines. Humor and romance also sneak into every manuscript. Her work has earned nominations for a number of prestigious awards\, ranging from RWA’s Golden Heart for Romantic Suspense to Killer Nashville’s Silver Falchion for Best Cozy Mystery. \nLinda lives on a lake in Upstate South Carolina with her husband\, and enjoys swimming\, tennis\, gardening\, long walks\, and\, of course\, reading To learn more\, visit www.lindalovely.com \nAnd of course many of you know Dorothy St. James\, who’s had not one but TWO wonderful signings at Main Street Reads in the past\, including headlining the town’s Friday night Dessert Walk in 2019! Her newest entry (love this cover!) is The Broken Spine: When small-town assistant librarian Tru Beckett sets up a secret book room in her newly modernized library\, she discovers that protecting the printed word is harder than she’d ever imagined. In fact\, it’s murder. \nWe’ll have plenty of copies of her popular Chocolate Shop mysteries on hand as well! \nDorothy St. James is the alter-ego of award-winning multi-published author\, Dorothy McFalls. She enjoys writing in several different genres. Her works have been nominated for many awards including: Romantic Times Reviewers’ Choice Award\, Reviewers International Organization Award\, National Reader’s Choice Award\, CataRomance Reviewers’ Choice Award\, and The Romance Reviews Today Perfect 10! Award. Reviewers have called her work: “amazing”\, “perfect”\, “filled with emotion”\, and “lined with danger.”

SUMMARY:Children's Booksigning with PK Potts!
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday morning\, July 17th\, for a special book-signing with South Carolina author PK Potts\, visiting us from Walterboro with three young reader selections: Army the Armadillo\, If the Tree Could Talk\, and A Little Girl Named Sad. \nArmy the Armadillo\nArmy the Armadillo is an enchanting tale of unexpected friendships and overcoming obstacles in unusual habitats. When a veteran and his family travel from Ft. Hood\, Texas to live on the spectacular Pacific coast in Coos Bay\, Oregon they are startled by a strange stowaway! Encounters in a forest of furry bullies create memorable friendships between a little girl\, a prickly partner and the little armored one. \nIf the Tree Could Talk\nSit under the shade of the Half-Way Oak\, one of the Famous Trees of Texas. Listen with the little Cherokee girl as the tree weaves a tale. From acorn to oak\, the spirit of the tree comes alive with stories of the Cherokee Nation and famous marshals and outlaws traveling the old Ft. Griffin stagecoach pass. The tree talks with the wind and his favorite little person\, bringing him from tears to triumph recalling 200 years of history. \nA Little Girl Named Sad\nThis young adult novel\, based on a true story\, is about a girl’s difficult trials encountered while growing up with teenage alcoholic parents. Sometimes brutal\, often funny\, it is a frank and startling account of the damaging imprints left behind on children raised by parents with addictive behavior. This journey will take readers from the bluebonnets of Texas\, snow banks in Illinois\, and into the beautiful forests of Oregon. \nA candid chronicle of a child growing into womanhood that will encourage others who have trod this rocky path and help them to discover their own unique ways to face the obstacles from their past and the scars left behind. \npk potts is a graduate of The Institute of Children’s Literature. She is the author of the children’s book “Army the Armadillo” and “If the Tree Could Talk”\, and a featured poet in “The Poet’s Word\,” an anthology published by Steady Moon Press. A freelance poet\, writer and photographer whose work has appeared in Germany\, Texas\, Oregon and The Carolinas.

Alex has been paired with a senior and varsity quarterback\, Brad. Alex fears having to do work for both of them and maintaining his soaring GPA. In just a few short weeks\, Alex begins to see that not all athletes are dumb meatheads like he thought. And Brad proves to him that he is more than just some jock. \nIn Blueberry Ballerina\, Lacey Hudson is a bright and beautiful high school dancer in the upstate. Her parents own a small farm with fruit and horses. Lacey loves her farm almost as much as she loves dancing. Lacey’s skills earn her a spot with a summer program in Kansas City to dance with a professional company. She soars above and beyond what anyone would ever expect of a small-town farm girl to overcome the jealousy of others. Lacey’s hard work and positive attitude bring her face to face with the best ballerinas with the worst attitudes. \nWe look forward to seeing you on this special Summer Reading day to get signed books from these amazing authors and enjoy treats\, aspiring young writers and community on Hutchinson Square… \nEnjoy more Mary Alice Monroe selections HERE

SUMMARY:An Adventurous Third Thursday and Booksigning!
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to an outstanding Third Thursday this month. Not only will we have Mike Kaltofen on hand\, and not only will the town square be sporting an Adventure theme (complete with zip line!)\, but we’ll be hosting an adventure of our own: the authors of the debut memoir 100 Days in Vietnam. will join us for an adventurous book launch! \nDon’t miss this chance to meet co-authors Joseph and Matthew Tallon and get a personally signed copy of this much-anticipated work! \n“Joe Tallon scratched and clawed his way through Army training\, ultimately finding himself in Vietnam by 1972. His resiliency and strength to overcome shine through in this poignant survival story told in tandem by father and son.” – Mike Krzyzewski\, Head Coach\, Duke University\, West Point Class of 1969 \n“100 Days in Vietnam offers readers both a rare window on the final days of our painful national odyssey in Vietnam and a remarkable record of an individual’s determined quest to honor a fallen comrade.” – Ken Burns\, Filmmaker and Director of The Vietnam War\, The Civil War\, and many other films \nAbout 100 Days in Vietnam\nAs American troops continue their steady exodus on the last day of their ground war in Vietnam\, Lieutenant Joe Tallon is shot down by an enemy missile. Forced to eject at a dangerously low altitude from their OV-1 Mohawk\, Joe and his tactical observer\, Specialist-5 Daniel Richards\, land in the flaming wreckage. Lieutenant Tallon survives but Specialist Richards does not. Stateside\, Lieutenant Tallon begins to heal and proceed with his life but the loss of his tactical observer is never far from his mind. Forty years later\, Joe embarks on a quest to bring recognition to the sacrifice of Daniel Richards and secure a Purple Heart for his family. \nPainstakingly recreated from wartime letters and remembrances and contextualized by contemporary news accounts\, 100 Days in Vietnam is a collaboration between Joe and his son Matt-also an Army veteran. Here we experience the war through the emotions of the man who survived it: the drudgery and monotony of airfield life\, the heartache of a newlywed missing his wife\, the terror of combat missions\, the agony of injury and rehabilitation\, and the bittersweet relief from the completion of his final mission to bring recognition to his fallen comrade. \nAbout the Authors\nJoseph F. Tallon is a retired US Army lieutenant colonel who served from 1969 to 2007. Trained as a composite Army aviator in rotary and fixed-wing aircraft\, he flew the OV-1 Mohawk during Vietnam\, transitioning to Army intelligence after the war. A selection of his awards and decorations during his military service includes the Purple Heart\, the Meritorious Service Medal\, the Air Medal (2x)\, the Army Commendation Medal\, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry\, the Vietnam Wounded in Action Medal\, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Upon completion of a master’s degree in education and supervision at The Citadel in 1981\, Joe taught high school social studies. Retired from teaching\, he has been an active volunteer and fundraiser for the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. Joe has been married to his wife\, Martha Anne\, for fifty years and has two sons and six grandchildren. \nMatthew A. Tallon is a former US Army transportation officer who served primarily in overseas duty assignments for five years and completed his active-duty commitment as a captain. Matt is a graduate of Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a teaching certification. After completion of his military service\, Matt returned to Durham Public Schools to teach high school US history and civics. After graduating from Harvard with a master’s degree in education policy and management\, Matt currently serves as the senior project manager for the Public Education Leadership Project\, a joint education initiative between the Harvard Business School and Harvard Graduate School of Education. Matt has been married to his wife\, Lindsay\, for the past twenty years and has three sons.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Eileen Harrison Sanchez with Freedom Lessons
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to host award-winning author Eileen Harrison Sanchez at Main Street Reads May 15th\, to discuss her novel\, Freedom Lessons. \nTold alternately\, by Colleen\, an idealistic young white teacher; Frank\, a black high school football player; and Evelyn\, an experienced black teacher\, Freedom Lessons is the story of how the lives of these three very different people intersect in a rural Louisiana town in 1969. \nColleen enters into the culture of the rural Louisiana town with little knowledge of the customs and practices. She is compelled to take sides after the school is integrated–an overnight event for which the town’s residents are unprepared\, and which leads to confusion and anxiety in the community–and her values are tested as she seeks to understand her black colleagues\, particularly Evelyn. Why doesn’t she want to integrate the public schools? \nFrank\, meanwhile\, is determined to protect his mother and siblings after his father’s suspicious death–which means keeping a secret from everyone around him. \nBased on the author’s experience teaching in Louisiana in the late sixties\, this heartfelt\, unflinching novel about the unexpected effects of school integration during that time takes on the issues our nation currently faces regarding race\, unity\, and identity. \nFreedom Lessons – A Novel will appeal to readers who enjoy historical fiction and those interested in a broader view of our current civil rights and public school challenges. \nHistory could guide us if we would only listen.  \n\n\n\n\nAbout Eileen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFreedom Lessons – A Novel is a fictionalized version of the year Eileen spent teaching in a rural Louisiana town in the late 1960s. Her life’s work has been as an advocate for free\, appropriate and respectful educational opportunity for all students. She retired after a forty-year career in public education.

SUMMARY:Book Signing w/Beverly Bowers Jennings' Shrimp Tales: Small Bites of History
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 3rd for a special book signing\, perfect for a wonderful personalized Easter gift: Shrimp Tales: Small Bites of History with author Beverly Bowers Jennings! \nThis book portrays the history of the people\, places\, and boats of the commercial shrimping industry in the southern United States. 320 pages with more than 800 photos and illustrations – a gorgeous keepsake! \nBefore the invention of refrigerated boxcars in 1875\, the US shrimping industry virtually didn’t exist. People ate what they caught. The book begins with the region’s earliest shrimpers: Italian and Portuguese fishermen who came to Fernandina and St. Augustine \, FL at the end of the 19th century. They combined an enterprising ingenuity with old-world fishing techniques to turn shrimping into a profitable industry. \nSubsequent chapters show life in major shrimping ports up and down the coast. These include St. Augustine\, Fernandina\, Thunderbolt and Savannah\, Port Royal\, Beaufort\, Hilton Head Island\, Bennetts Point\, Edisto\, Rockville\, Shem Creek\, McClellanville and Georgetown. Additionally\, a chapter offers a colorful glimpse of the Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies. Finally\, there is a chapter that examines the integral role that shrimpers played in keeping the German chemical company\, BASF\, from building a plant that could have devastated local fishing. This event may have saved the future of many seaside resorts\, like Hilton Head\, that depended on clean waters. \nBased on years of research and relentless pursuit of the photos that tell the story\, this book is more than just a photo history. It is a story of a community and culture. Photos\, drawings and sidebars provide explanations of shrimping operations and equipment. Recipes in each chapter are often provided by a member of one of the local shrimping families. Quotes by local shrimpers\, and even some poems\, dot the book\, reminding us that shrimping in the Southeast is as much about the people and the place as it is about the shrimp. \nAll proceeds of sales will go to the South Carolina Seafood Alliance\, which advocates for healthy and safe seafood sources. EAT LOCAL SHRIMP! \nAnd you’ll get to meet Beverly: My love of the saltwater and fishing began when I was 6 years old in Connecticut. At that time\, my father built me a white wooden rowboat with red trim named Little Fish. Fiber-glassing was in its infancy\, and on the suggestion of a friend\, he decided to cover the boat with it. I loved rowing that boat and used to take friends out to their anchored boats for sailing and fishing.\n \nBeginning in 1997\, my husband and I began spending time each year on Hilton Head Island\, and in 2000 we bought a home here. Living on the Island\, directly overlooking the marsh\, enhanced my fascination with the Lowcountry and the waters surrounding it. This led me in 2010 to enroll in a Master Naturalist Program through the Clemson Extension Service\, held at the Lowcountry Institute on Spring Island. \n

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Local Author Matt Loveland with The Artist: Faith\, Science and the Rest of Us
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating chat and Meet the Author event with local author Matt Loveland\, and get a signed copy of his new release: The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us. \nAbout the Book:\nYou matter because you were made.Created\, on purpose\, in the very image of God. And that’s not just a slogan. That’s something author Matt Loveland set out to prove. You believe the world was created. At least\, statistically you do. According to a 2018-2019 PEW Research poll\, 96% of Americans believe in a higher power. But whether it’s parents\, school\, or the media\, 100% of us are taught from an early age that faith is the trade of the superstitious; that science and Atheism are one in the same. \nMeet Matt:\nMatt Loveland came to faith in Christ because he was turned off by the irrationality of Atheism; he was drawn in by the logic and reason of God. In The Artist: Faith\, Science\, and the Rest of Us\, he takes readers along his journey to discover a surprisingly biblical truth that the majority of Christians believe and at the same time feel they lack the tools to express: that God guided our evolution. On purpose\, and for a reason: because He loves us. And He loves you.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Signe Pike with The Forgotten Kingdom!
DESCRIPTION:We’re super excited to have the amazing Signe Pike grace Main Street Reads on Sunday\, December 6th for a special event and book signing. Her best-selling books have been making waves. The Forgotten Kingdom is the second in a trilogy; we’ll also have the first in the trilogy\, The Lost Queen\, on hand to be personally signed. \nRefreshments will be served\, including a special brew of spiced cider to set the mood. Let us know if you plan to attend so we set aside the book(s) for you as this event is expected to sell out. \nThe Forgotten Kingdom: AD 573. Imprisoned in her chamber\, Languoreth awaits news in torment. Her husband and son have ridden off to war against her brother\, Lailoken. She doesn’t yet know that her young daughter\, Angharad\, who was training with Lailoken to become a Wisdom Keeper\, has been lost in the chaos. As one of the bloodiest battles of early medieval Scottish history abandons its survivors to the wilds of Scotland\, Lailoken and his men must flee to exile in the mountains of the Lowlands\, while nine year-old Angharad must summon all Lailoken has taught her to follow her own destiny through the mysterious\, mystical land of the Picts. \nIn the aftermath of the battle\, old political alliances unravel\, opening the way for the ambitious adherents of the new religion: Christianity. Lailoken is half-mad with battle sickness\, and Languoreth must hide her allegiance to the Old Way to survive her marriage to the next Christian king of Strathclyde. Worst yet\, the new King of the Angles is bent on expanding his kingdom at any cost. Now the exiled Lailoken\, with the help of a young warrior named Artur\, may be the only man who can bring the warring factions together to defeat the encroaching Angles. But to do so\, he must claim the role that will forever transform him. He must become the man known to history as “Myrddin.” \n“Intrigue\, rivalry\, and magic among the mists of old Britain–The Forgotten Kingdom is an enchantment of a read! (Kate Quinn\, New York Times bestselling author). \nTake a look at the book trailers below and learn more at https://www.signepike.com/. \n \n \nSigne Pike was born in Ithaca\, NY\, and graduated from Cornell University with her Bachelor of Science in Communication. SUMMARY:Booksigning: Christina Sinisi with Christmas on Ocracoke
DESCRIPTION:Join us on December 5th as we kick off a big holiday month with Christina Sinisi’s Christmas on Ocracoke. You may remember Christina signing with us last year for her first novel\, Christmas Confusion! Both will be available to be signed… a perfect Christmas gift! \nReeling from the upheaval of a failed marriage\, Annie Hanahan is desperate for a new start—and when she inherits a cottage on Ocracoke Island\, she may finally get it. Without a second thought\, she packs up and leaves everything behind: her first name\, her job\, and her ex-husband\, because more than anything\, she wants to get her son away from his father’s partying and neglectful ways. \nBut when she arrives in the Outer Banks\, she finds the island—and her promised refuge—ravaged by Hurricane Dorian. When their parents died in a tragic car accident\, Trey Kingsley dropped out of college to raise his sister. Now that she’s grown and moved away\, it’s his turn to find a life of his own. As a contractor who has given so much of his time to helping Ocracoke recover from the devastation of Hurricane Dorian\, it surprises no one when he offers to help the beautiful newcomer\, but something is holding her back. \nLife keeps throwing them together\, though\, or perhaps God’s hand is giving them a nudge. DESCRIPTION:Join us between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday\, November 24th when Rebecca Dwight Bruff will be signing American Fiction award-winning Trouble the Water. Stick around for a discussion of the book afterwards as the featured Pulpwood Queen book club read this month! \n\nDeeply moving and illuminating\, TROUBLE THE WATER reveals the little-known real-life story of Robert Smalls. Born enslaved before the Civil War\, Smalls witnesses great privilege and immense suffering alongside his owner’s daughter and the dangerous son of a firebrand secessionist. \nAt the age of twelve\, he’s sent to work in Charleston\, where he loads ships and learns to pilot a cotton steamer. When the war erupts and his cotton steamer becomes a confederate warship\, Robert attempts a harrowing escape to freedom for himself and the people he loves. \n\n\n“With this stunning debut novel\, Rebecca Bruff establishes herself as an exciting new voice in historical fiction.” – Cassandra King Conroy \n\nRebecca Bruff heard the story of Robert Smalls on her first visit to South Carolina. She was so captivated that she left her job and moved across the country to research and write this novel. Bruff earned her Bachelors degree in education (Texas A&M) and Master and Doctorate degrees in theology (Southern Methodist University). In 2017\, she was a scholarship recipient for the prestigious Key West Literary Seminar. She volunteers at the Pat Conroy Literary Center in Beaufort\, South Carolina. She’s published non-fiction\, plays a little tennis\, travels when she can\, and loves life in the lowcountry with her husband and an exuberant golden retriever. Learn more at rebeccabruff.com

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Joe Palmer with A Mariner's Tale
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, November 8th\, from noon ’til 2 pm for a very special signing with Joe Palmer\, hot on the heels of his feature appearance at the Pat Conroy Literary Festival in Beaufort on Saturday! \nWe’ll have refreshments and Joe will chat about his amazing novel. Copies will be on sale at the book club price (10% off) and can be personalized by the author for yourself or the perfect holiday gift. Here’s what other amazing authors are saying about this rich and rewarding tale: \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a stunning debut: a seafaring novel rich with lush imagery and colorful characters from an exciting new voice in Southern fiction. With deft narrative skill\, the author takes the protagonist\, a cynical middle-aged mariner\, and his protege\, a troubled young man\, on a voyage of self-discovery that begins on an island in Florida and ends in an Irish fishing village. You don’t want to miss this beautifully crafted page-turner!” \n– Cassandra King\, bestselling author of Tell Me a Story: My Life with Pat Conroy \n“Hard-edged and gripping.  An intriguing mix of hope and fear.  Fans of Pat Conroy’s evocative novels are going to love this stirring debut.” \n– Steve Berry\, New York Times bestselling author of The Warsaw Protocol \n“A Mariner’s Tale is a richly rendered story scented with sea spray and filled with salty characters seeking grace\, mercy and second chances. Palmer writes with heart and authenticity\, bringing to life an unfortgettable crew worthy of the love and redemption we each hope to find in this life.” – \nNicole Seitz\, author of The Cage-Maker \n“A beautifully drawn sea-faring tale built around a marina full of lovingly flawed characters who have\, in different ways\, been floundered by life; who in rescuing each other\, manage to rescue themselves. Set in the lush beauty of the inlets\, streams and maritime world of North Florida\, A Mariner’s Tale is told with great heart and uncommon compassion by an author who knows the life of tide and salt and of the sea.” \nJanis Owen\, author of American Ghost \nPart nautical yarn\, part romance\, and part coming-of-age story\, A Mariner’s Tale is a page-turner\, but Joe Palmer’s beautiful prose slows the pace to a perfect rhythm\, allowing the reader to participate in the wonders of nature and the resilience of the human heart on a barrier island just off the northeast coast of Florida. \n—Susan Cushman\, author of Friends of the Library and Cherry Bomb\, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing

SUMMARY:Stories on the Square: Celebrating Differences on a Spectacular Saturday
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday morning\, November 7 (10:30 a.m. – Noon)\, we’ll be hosting TWO great children’s books and authors for a Spectacular Stories on the Square and Book Signing! \nJoining us will be Chris Singleton\, inspirational speaker and author of Different and Marybeth Wishart\, former teacher and author of Parker the Purple Penguin. The books will be read aloud and families can purchase copies from us\, personally signed by the authors. Both books carry excellent messages of inclusivity\, are beautifully and vibrantly illustrated\, and (ahem) make perfect holiday gifts! \nAND… our own amazing storytime reader Colleen Ratkleff will be here\, too! \nMeet Chris Singleton\nChris Singleton is a former professional baseball player in the Chicago Cubs organization as well as an inspirational speaker who has traveled the country passionately speaking to over 60\,000 students. Chris has also spread his message through various different media outlets and has been featured on ESPN’s E:60\, Sports Illustrated magazine\, CNN\, and USA Today. \nHis mother\, Sharonda Coleman Singleton\, was murdered along with eight other victims at Mother Emanuel AME church in Downtown Charleston\, South Carolina on June 17th 2015 by a white male who wanted to start a race-related war in the United States. Chris inspired his city and the nation by forgiving the man who murdered his mother and stating that “Love is stronger than hate.” \nChri’s children’s book teaches kids not only to accept\, but to celebrate\, people who are different from them. Different: A Story About Loving Your Neighbor tells the story of Obinna\, a boy who moves from Nigeria to Charleston\, and finds that he doesn’t look\, sound\, or dress like his classmates. Singleton’s mother\, Sharonda\, makes an appearance in the book as Obinna’s teacher\, who reminds him that he is “beautifully and wonderfully made.” It’s a thoughtful tribute to the woman who first taught Singleton about love’s healing power. \nMeet Marybeth Wishart\nMarybeth Wishart is a retired special education teacher who has taught at both the elementary and high school level for over thirty-four years. She is a Connecticut native now living in South Carolina and trying as many new things as possible\, including publishing her first children’s book. \nParker the Purple Penguin is a story she told her own children on their way to school over thirty years ago. Its messages are as relevant now as they were then\, and birthed from the beautiful differences of her classroom kids. Marybeth would love to publish more of her children’s stories and to use Parker the Purple Penguin to support anti-bullying\, diversity\, and children’s literacy programs. \nParker the Purple Penguin doesn’t get why he is ignored and ostracized by his fellow penguins. Why don’t they like him\, when they have so many things in common? Why is he ignored by all of the other penguins just because of his purple coloring? Is there anything Parker can do to try to fit in? \nFollow Parker’s story as he confronts his differences\, and see how the other penguins change their behavior as Parker tries hard to blend in with the crowd. Parker’s tale is a journey of self-discovery as he learns to accept himself in the midst of bullying and peer pressure. \n(Hint: Fans of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will love this book!)

SUMMARY:Launch Party and Booksigning: The Ocean at Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday evening\, October 23rd when author Lorna Hollifield will be at Main Street Reads to celebrate the launch of her second novel\, The Ocean at Night. \nTwo Ways to Participate!\nLorna will be at Main Street Reads from 5:30 to 7:30. She’ll talk a bit about the book on Zoom and to gathered guests (social distance rules will apply)\, followed by book signing. Refreshments will be served. \nTo Join Zoom Meeting:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83330080974?pwd=cW9VYVUxVVVHYkJpcFBtd2Vpa3NxUT09\nMeeting ID: 833 3008 0974 Passcode: 744155 \nAbout the Book\nThey’re all lost: a teenage girl from the wrong side of the sand\, a grieving father with a chip on his shoulder\, a ne’er-do-well mother addicted to men\, and a six-year-old girl last seen happily swinging her red sand bucket. \nFolly Beach is a barrier island near Charleston\, South Carolina made famous for making people disappear. Legends of sunken ships\, quarantined drifters\, wartime burial grounds\, and lost Indian tribes have nicknamed the town “Coffin Island.” However\, much of the folklore has been entombed by colorful beach shops\, greasy crab shacks and bustling sunbathers. That is\, until the summer of 2019 when young fossil hunter\, Teal McHone\, becomes the last person to lay eyes on a child snatched from the shoreline on a hot July evening. Suddenly the small beach town once again lives up to its dark reputation\, and the kidnapping ignites a chain of sinister events along the South Carolina coast. Will Teal realize just what she saw in time to save the girl? \nThis coming-of-age\, romantic thriller will keep the pages turning as Teal fights to unearth all that’s hidden beneath the sands and souls on this tiny southern beach. The pull of the ocean tempers the pace of her awakening and the fates of all those caught up in its enigmatic motion. Will the strengthening tide pull the lost further out to sea or finally deliver them safely back to shore? \nMeet the Author\nLorna Hollifield was born in Asheville\, North Carolina\, but now enjoys the “salt life” outside of Charleston\, South Carolina with her family and favorite Springer Spaniel. \nHollifield began her professional writing journey as a tourism and travel blogger before finally breaking into the fiction market when Pen Name Publishing picked up her debut novel\, Tobacco Sun\, in 2017.  Since then Lorna served as President for the South Carolina Writers Association\, has been a featured speaker at numerous literary conferences\, was published in the Fall Lines literary anthology\, and spent a year as the book columnist for Skirt Magazine. \nWhen Lorna isn’t writing\, she is most likely bumming on the beach\, or exploring the never-ending South Carolina LowCountry she loves so much. Her first novel was Tobacco Sun.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: God's Little Bird: A War Orphan's Story with Laura Knotts
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome local author Laura Knotts on Saturday\, September 12\, 2020\, discussing her book God’s Little Bird: A War Orphan’s Story. \n75 years ago\, hundreds of thousands of Baltic citizens were caught in the bloody crossfire of the Soviets and Nazis and forced to flee their homelands. Lithuanian citizens had suffered brutal persecution during earlier Soviet and German occupations\, and by the end of the second Soviet Occupation\, only 1 million Lithuanians remained out of a population of 3 million. \nSimilarly\, in what became known as the Lithuanian Diaspora\, only one in three of those who fled Lithuania as refugees survived. These 60\,000 surviving refugees were detained and sheltered in German Displaced Persons Camp and became known by the name of “God’s Little Birds.” \nThis is the remarkable story of one such “little bird\,” a young boy named Joseph\, who on a cold October day in 1944 was suddenly wrenched from everything he knew and held dear and forced to flee for his life\, leaving his mother\, brothers\, and sisters behind surrounded by mined fields and under a sky black with bombs. However\, like the story of the biblical Joseph who was forced into exile far from his homeland and family\, God had His hand on this little Lithuanian boy\, and in His providential plan\, \nHe brought Joseph safely through a journey of exile\, loss\, persecution\, and despair into a new life in America where by God’s grace\, Joseph’s story was transformed into one of belonging\, prosperity\, hope\, restoration\, and purpose.

SUMMARY:Booksigning: Marie Crow with Abigail and Her Pet Zombie
DESCRIPTION:So excited to announce that author Marie Crow will join us March 21st at Main Street Reads…\n\nMarie Crow weaves her stories around the human element of the horror versus the “monsters” themselves. She believes that the real horror of life does not come from the expected\, but from the unexpected responses of the human nature and what depths of trauma a person has to survive in certain situations.\n\nShe began writing The Risen series when feeling that the popular genre was slipping too deep into the realm of pure “slasher” and forgetting what the horror of zombies can mean for a story.\nNow with her children’s series launched\, Marie hopes to use her favorite “monster” as a teaching tool to inspire children to understand that not everything that looks scary\, is scary. With Abigail and Her Pet Zombie series\, Marie hopes to further spread her love for all things “that go bump in the night” with small children\, showing them that it’s okay to be different and to embrace those same differences in those around them. \n         \n    \n \n
