SUMMARY:Book Signing: The Final Victory by Roger Jones
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to host Roger Jones\, author of the brand new hit\, The Final Victory\, in-store on Sunday afternoon\, May 5th! Read on for more on this incredible release and its inspiring author: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a novel that fuses the riveting action of The Boys in the Boat with the emotional heft of The Fault in Our Stars\, twenty cancer patients compete in a grueling race only to discover that real victory is achieved within. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter he is diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer\, Tripp Avery feels like all is lost. He finds himself coaching a team of twelve men and eight women with cancer diagnoses of their own\, hoping to qualify for the Mixed Masters Dragon Boat national championship and defy their prognoses. If they win\, they will represent the United States at the International Dragon Boat races in Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nBut things soon get complicated\, as four of his teammates struggle against their physical limitations and the psychological weight of their conditions. In the summer heat of Chattanooga\, their resolve grows thin–along with Tripp’s patience. After a devastating loss to the defending national champions\, Tripp can only see the finish line\, and he pushes the team even harder. Soon\, the team starts to fall apart. \n\n\n\nAs members of the team collapse under the pressure and one is hospitalized\, Tripp must confront his failings and find a way to move forward. He begins to question his motives\, wondering if the win is worth the trauma and what that says about him. Despite the odds\, he resolves to rally the team toward a comeback that seems impossible\, if only for one final victory. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoger Jones\, businessman\, philanthropist\, humanitarian and avid athlete has founded numerous business and community organizations. In 1996\, he started Companion Associates\, Inc.\, one of South Carolina’s largest privately held real estate development firms. He has helped establish and launch non-profit organizations including Reading Partners of South Carolina\, Charleston Social Venture Partners\, and The Charleston Paddle Club. \n\n\n\nDuring a 2012 trip to East Germany to receive a newly developed intensive radiation treatment for Neuroendocrine Cancer\, Roger decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. The Final Victory is his first novel. Married for forty-seven years\, Roger is the proud father of three children and grandfather of three grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Third Thursday Book Signing: American Wild by Marissa Hale
DESCRIPTION:On Third Thursday\, we’ll be celebrating one of our own! A few years back\, Marissa Hale was workshopping this beautiful piece of historical fiction with us. Now American Wild has been birthed and is ready to meet the world! Based on true events\, this is the inspiring story of a French widow thrust alone into the New World after her husband’s murder… \n\n\n\nAmerica. L’Amérique. A foreign land threatens to take French-born Vittorie LeClerc’s love during a revolution and ultimately succeeds during questionable peace. She watches his last breath evaporate into nothing\, leaving her to survive with only her will\, a knife and a few gold buttons. \n\n\n\nWith the help of a mysterious man of the woods and other pioneers\, Vittorie navigates uncharted territory\, language barriers\, fractious warring nations\, suspicious settlers\, underground slave kings\, and a burgeoning new government. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBased on true events and historical figures during and after the Revolutionary War\, American Wild is the unforgettable story of a woman’s odyssey into significance\, a searchlight into heart\, mind\, history\, and spirit. \n\n\n\nMeet Marissa\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnamored of the natural world and the human experience in it\, Marissa Hale has traveled to eleven countries on three continents and visited thirty-eight of the fifty United States. She learned French at a young age\, studied in Paris\, France at the American University there\, and graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Communications. \n\n\n\nMarissa began researching the story of Frenchman’s Knob shortly after her own move to Hart County\, Kentucky in December 2007. Fresh off the road from touring with her sisters in her band and feeling for the first time like she was terrible at everything she tried to do in her new life\, she felt lost\, ill-equipped\, and alone. The band had broken up\, her dyed-red hair seemed misplaced among her sweet Amish neighbors\, and she was practically the only woman within a 50-mile radius who wasn’t married with children or a fabulous cook. \n\n\n\nWhen a neighbor delivered Florence Edwards Gardiner’s little green book of her father’s (Cyrus Edwards) stories about the landscape and its people and casually said\, “I’ve always thought someone should make a movie out of the second story\, the one about Frenchman’s Knob…” Marissa was hooked. Because of her previous experience in France and knowledge of the language\, the highest peak in Kentucky being named “Frenchman’s Knob” and the accompanying story captured her attention. \n\n\n\nMarissa knew storytelling. She could research. And she did. \n\n\n\nBefore becoming a historical fiction author with American Wild\, Marissa wrote songs and screenplays\, performed for crowds of thousands\, and taught elementary school art. In addition to writing\, she now owns a general contracting company and makes her home in South Carolina with her husband\, children\, and grandchildren.

Magnetic\, addictive. Bold and dangerous. Especially for Margot\, who meets Lucy at the end of their freshman year at a liberal arts college in South Carolina. Margot is the shy one\, the careful one\, always the sidekick and never the center of attention. But when Lucy singles her out at the end of the year\, a year Margot spent studying and playing it safe\, and asks her to room together\, something in Margot can’t say no–something daring\, or starved\, or maybe even envious. \n\n\n\nAnd so Margot finds herself living in an off-campus house with three other girls\, Lucy\, the ringleader; Sloane\, the sarcastic one; and Nicole\, the nice one\, the three of them opposites but also deeply intertwined. It’s a year that finds Margot finally coming out of the shell she’s been in since the end of high school\, when her best friend Eliza died three weeks after graduation. Margot and Lucy have become the closest of friends\, but by the middle of their sophomore year\, one of the fraternity boys from the house next door has been brutally murdered… and Lucy Sharpe is missing without a trace. \n\n\n\nFrom the author of A Flicker in the Dark and All the Dangerous Things comes a tantalizing thriller about the nature of friendship and belonging\, about loyalty\, envy\, and betrayal–another gripping novel from an author quickly becoming the gold standard in psychological suspense. \n\n\n\n\nGET YOUR TICKETS HERE! SUMMARY:Meet the Author! Angie Mizzell Signing "Girl in the Spotlight"
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a special book signing on December 9th when TV journalist Angie Mizzell will be at Main Street Reads to sign her fascinating new memoir\, Girl in the Spotlight. Especially excited about this one\, readers\, since Angie and I had the privilege of serving on Charleston’s Center for Women board together – and she’s fantastic! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy age 25\, Angie Mizzell was a morning news anchor at a top-rated television station. She had married her college sweetheart\, and scenes from their wedding day ran on the evening news. She’d achieved everything her mom had wanted for her and what she thought she wanted for herself. \n\n\n\nBut after signing with an agent who promised to take her career to the next level\, Angie began to realize that a future in the spotlight would not dim a past filled with childhood trauma and loss. As a television journalist\, she’d made a living by exploring and reporting other people’s stories; it was time to examine her own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her coming-of-age memoir\, “Girl in the Spotlight\,” Angie shares a heartfelt and hopeful story of arriving at a crossroads\, getting lost in the darkness\, learning to let go\, and finding her way back home. \n\n\n\nAngie Mizzell is a writer\, a mom and a former local TV news anchor. She’s the author of “Hello Friday\,” a weekly newsletter on Substack where she explores ways to feel at home where we live\, in our relationships\, in our work and within. She lives in West Ashley with her husband and their three children.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Reading Jane with Susannah Kennedy!
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be a part of this eastern leg of Susannah’s tour – come join in the fun and enjoy refreshments and some stimulating conversation. The book will be available to be signed by the author that day! \n\n\n\nReading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir and the book tour “Surviving the Narcissistic Mother” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the estimation of narcissism and its impact on children grows\, more people are identifying as the children of such an upbringing. They have been raised by a parent whose sense of self-importance overshadowed the child\, the child existing rather as an extension of a parental self that lacks empathy and often exploits their child. It’s estimated that nearly 60 million people are damaged by such relational patterns. Children of such parents are vulnerable to poor self-esteem\, lack of boundaries\, and co-dependence. \n\n\n\nHaving emerged on the other side of this phenomenon\, Susannah Kennedy\, author of Reading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir has launched her book tour along the East Coast. The tour includes a stop at Main Street Reads in Summerville!\, where she’ll sign copies as well as address her path to healing. It wasn’t an easy one\, and might not have been achieved at all had Susannah’s mother not inexplicably taken her own life at age 75. When Susannah discovered 45 years of Jane’s diaries\, she had a portal into the narrative her mother created and lived. \n\n\n\nSusannah avoided plunging in for three years\, until she was driven to do so\, to understand finally the mystery her mother presented. What emerges is Susannah’s own story in contrast to her mother’s\, and ultimately leads her to finally shake off the constraints set by Jane’s need to control both the narrative and her daughter. \n\n\n\nPrevious events on the West Coast leg of the tour have demonstrated that Susannah is not alone. Nearly 5 percent or 1 in 200 people suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the sons and daughters are showing up at book events — to take from Susannah’s story of healing the hope they might finally understand and heal their own. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Jane: Surviving the Narcissistic Mother Eastern Seaboard Tour will encompass 12 cities in October and November 2023: Boston and Gloucester\, Massachusetts; Newport\, Rhode Island; Owego and Woodstock\, New York; Washington D.C.; Montrose and Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Charlotte\, North Carolina; Hilton Head Island and Summerville\, South Carolina; and Savannah\, Georgia. For details on dates\, times\, and locations\, please visit www.sibyllinepress.com or www.susannahkennedy.com. Main Street Reads at 115 S. Main Street in Summerville will host Susannah on November 19th from 1-3 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist Susannah Kennedy was born in India and raised in the United States. Later\, she traveled extensively on her own\, first in Italy\, and then through the Middle East and India\, settling for two years in Egypt before becoming a reporter in Dallas\, Texas. At Oxford University\, she specialized in Arab culture and politics\, receiving her DPhil in social anthropology. She and her psychoanalyst husband lived and worked in Germany\, raising three children in a thatched-roof farmhouse in the countryside outside Hamburg. Her mother’s suicide and its aftermath brought them back to California in 2017. They now reside in Marin County.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author! Steve Lazarus Signing Call Me Sonny
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special thriller book signing with Steve Lazarus\, debut of the new thriller\, Call Me Sonny. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShortly after a corrupt attorney pays a visit to an inmate in a maximum security federal prison\, people from the inmate’s past start dying.  Bryce Chandler\, a retired FBI agent eking out a living as a private investigator in the Florida Keys\, ties the string of killings to a shadowy murder-for-hire ring operating on the Dark Web.  As Bryce digs further into the murders\, he discovers the final name on the hit list is his own. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, a simple divorce case turns out to be much more than meets the eye\, as Bryce’s investigation of the defendant leads him down a path of international drug smuggling\, money laundering\, and violent henchmen bent on keeping him silent.  The two storylines run parallel to one another until they eventually converge in a final\, bloody outcome.  \n\n\n\n\n“Bryce Chandler is a compelling addition to the pantheon of hard-boiled fictional detectives. Lazarus puts his experience as an FBI agent to good use in Call Me Sonny\, and the book feels more realistic than most detective novels. Impossible to put down!” \n—Joe Weisberg\, Emmy Award-winning writer and creator of The Americans\n\n\n\nSteve’s debut novel was inspired by one of his real-life cases. After arresting a subject who threatened to unleash a bioterror attack on the Atlanta subway system\, Steve and his partner found themselves on the receiving end of a death threat from the soon-to-be convicted felon. And though that subject would spend the next 25 years in prison\, Steve couldn’t help but wonder…what if he could make good on his threat\, even from behind bars? The most logical solution would be if he hired a hit man\, and…voila! A novel was born. Written over the course of a year in Abu Dhabi\, the Florida Keys\, and Texas hill country\, “Call Me Sonny” was a labor of love incorporating the personalities\, anecdotes\, and experiences of Steve’s multi-faceted FBI career\, and if things work out as planned\, it will be the first in a series of Bryce Chandler crime thrillers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Lazarus is a first-time author\, retired FBI Special Agent\, and United States Air Force veteran.  He served twenty-two years in the FBI\, spending the first half of his career investigating drug trafficking organizations and violent street gangs.  Later\, he became a full-time bomb technician\, an assignment which led him to Iraq\, Kuwait and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror.  After retiring from the Bureau\, he spent several years as a national security contractor in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates. Steve lives on the South Carolina coast with his wife Susan and their amazing wonder dog\, Aspen.

SUMMARY:Honoring Veteran's Day: Book Signing with Award-Winning Military Historian James M. Scott
DESCRIPTION:As we honor our military heroes on Veteran’s Day\, we’re sharing a special signing with you (and perfect gift options before the holidays!) Brilliant author James M. Scott will be at Main Street Reads from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, signing his most recent (and many say best) book\, Black Snow: \n\n\n\nSeven minutes past midnight on March 10\, 1945\, nearly 300 American B-29s thundered into the skies over Tokyo. Their payloads of incendiaries ignited a firestorm that reached up to 2\,800 degrees\, liquefying asphalt and vaporizing thousands; sixteen square miles of the city were flattened and more than 100\,000 men\, women\, and children were killed. \n\n\n\nBlack Snow is the story of this devastating operation\, orchestrated by Major General Curtis LeMay\, who famously remarked: “If we lose the war\, we’ll be tried as war criminals.” James M. Scott reconstructs in granular detail that horrific night\, and describes the development of the B-29\, the capture of the Marianas for use as airfields\, and the change in strategy from high-altitude daylight “precision” bombing to low-altitude nighttime incendiary bombing. Most importantly\, the raid represented a significant moral shift for America\, marking the first time commanders deliberately targeted civilians which helped pave the way for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki five months later. \n\n\n\nDrawing on first-person interviews with American pilots and bombardiers and Japanese survivors\, air force archives\, and oral histories never before published in English\, Scott delivers a harrowing and gripping account\, and his most important and compelling work to date. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Kirkus and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. \n\n\n\nHis other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist; The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Scott lives with his wife and two children in Mt. Pleasant\, SC.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special September book signing with Kristen Ness\, author of the much-anticipated debut novel\, At Loggerheads from Evening Post Books. \n\n\n\nMeet At Loggerheads:\n\n\n\n“Kristen Ness’s At Loggerheads is a thrilling debut novel intertwined with mystery\, nature\, romance\, and betrayal. Set on a lush barrier island\, Ness offers the reader a rich sense of place in a whodunit that reflects on the meaning of home. A must read—especially if you love sea turtles!” —MARY ALICE MONROE\, New York Times bestselling author of 27 books\, including The Beach House series \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMurder on a South Carolina barrier island brings together a sea turtle biologist and a local detective to unravel a mystery that might impact the race for the White House.  \n\n\n\nIn late May\, loggerhead sea turtles should be nesting on Anders Isle and scientist Brooke Edens should feel more at home on the island where she grew up. But something is amiss. When a dead body surfaces along with other big crimes\, Brooke finds herself entangled in a homicide investigation with detective Drew Young\, her closest friend (and sometimes love interest). \n\n\n\nAt the same time\, a favorite candidate is emerging for the upcoming US presidential election\, and he happens to be the father of Brooke’s ex-fiancé\, who just complicates matters with each visit to the island. While Brooke’s knowledge of sea turtles helps Drew discover and decipher evidence\, the many revelations\, betrayals\, and secrets threaten not only the investigation but also Brooke’s closest relationships and her beloved turtles.  \n\n\n\nWill they be able to untangle the web of crimes and catch the killer before it’s too late? \n\n\n\nCaptivating\, clever\, and timely\, At Loggerheads is a love letter to the barrier islands and coastal towns of the South Carolina Lowcountry\, where the often-opposing forces of Mother Nature and human nature influence what people will do for money\, for power\, and for love.  \n\n\n\nMeet Kristen\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n I’m tall. I write. I stay up late. \n\n\n\nI grew up mostly in South Carolina\, spending countless days with nature and falling in love with the ocean and its creatures on Isle of Palms\, where\, for the past ten years\, I’ve walked the beach at sunrise each summer in search of sea turtle nests as a volunteer for the Island Turtle Team. \n\n\n\nWhile practicing immigration law for twenty years\, I’ve been moonlighting in pursuit of my lifelong passion for writing and my obsession with marine biology. Writing\, real estate\, politics\, and even publishing run in my blood as the daughter of an English teacher and a land developer\, and the great-granddaughter of the 14th Governor of North Dakota whose family owned and published The Bismarck Tribune. \n\n\n\nI have a BA in English from Duke University\, a JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law\, and I serve as an appointed member of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council’s Coral Advisory Panel. I live in Charleston\, SC\, with my husband\, our two children\, and a cat. \n\n\n\nAt Loggerheads is Kristen’s first novel.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: The Aliens Will Come to Georgia First
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special book signing with Stephen Hundley\, author of the debut fiction collection\, The Aliens Will Come to Georgia First\, releasing from North Georgia Press this Tuesday. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Aliens Will Come to Georgia First showcases sixteen bizarre\, hard-loving stories set in the foothills\, pinelands\, low country\, and barrier islands of Georgia\, and a few other places\, too. In its pages\, a boy and girl find a body on the marsh\, a delusional nude model takes on the fight of his life\, and a diver visits a sleeping nuclear bomb just a mile from the beach. This debut collection offers an intimate glimpse into a working class\, American South populated by people who have made themselves acolytes of existential powers-weapons of mass destruction and alien invasions\, the wide ocean and desperate love. This is a book for dreamers and space cadets\, fighters and providers\, and anyone who believes in a connection between the places we come from and the people we become.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStephen Hundley is the author of The Aliens Will Come to Georgia First (University of North Georgia Press\, 2023) and Bomb Island (Hub City Press\, 2024). SUMMARY:Book Signing - Indigo Isle!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 5th for a special “Meet the Author” with TI Lowe and grab a signed copy of her new release\, Indigo Isle. A story of hanging on and letting go\, of redemption and reconciliation\, and of a love that heals the deepest wounds\, from the author of the breakout Southern fiction bestseller Under the Magnolias. BOTH books will be available for sale and signing\, and treats are on us! \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Storms show up and there ain’t a thing we can do to stop them.” \n\n\n\nSonny Bates left South Carolina fifteen years ago and never looked back. Now she’s a successful Hollywood location scout who travels the world\, finding perfect places for movie shoots. Home is wherever she lands\, and between her busy schedule and dealing with her boss’s demands\, she has little time to think about the past… until her latest gig lands her a stone’s throw from everything she left behind. \n\n\n\nSearching off the coast of Charleston for a secluded site to film a key scene\, Sonny wanders onto a private barrier island and encounters its reclusive owner\, known by locals as the Monster of Indigo Isle. What she finds is a man much more complex than the myth. \n\n\n\nOnce a successful New York attorney\, Hudson Renfrow’s grief has exiled him to his island for years. He spends his days alone\, tending his fields of indigo\, and he has no interest in serving the intrusive needs of a film company or yielding to Sonny’s determined curiosity. But when a hurricane makes landfall on the Carolina coast\, stranding them together\, an unlikely friendship forms between the two damaged souls.

She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home\, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. \nMost of all\, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother\, Mark\, who never left their hometown\, gets fired from one job after another\, and resents her success. Unfortunately\, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market. \nBut some houses don’t want to be sold\, and their home has other plans for both of them… \nLike his novels The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support Group\, How to Sell a Haunted House is classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying–a gripping new read from “the horror master” (USA Today). \nREGISTER HERE!\nFollowing up her instant New York Times bestseller\, A Flicker in the Dark\, Stacy Willingham delivers a totally gripping thriller about a desperate mother with a troubled past in All the Dangerous Things. \nOne year ago\, Isabelle Drake’s life changed forever: her toddler son\, Mason\, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase\, the case quickly went cold. However\, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her–literally. \nExcept for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time\, she hasn’t slept in a year. \nIsabelle’s entire existence now revolves around finding him\, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever. In hopes of jarring loose a new witness or buried clue\, she agrees to be interviewed by a true-crime podcaster–but his interest in Isabelle’s past makes her nervous. His incessant questioning paired with her severe insomnia has brought up uncomfortable memories from her own childhood\, making Isabelle start to doubt her recollection of the night of Mason’s disappearance\, as well as second-guess who she can trust… including herself. But she is determined to figure out the truth no matter where it leads. \nMeet the Authors!\nGrady Hendrix is an award-winning novelist and screenwriter living in New York City. He is the author of Horrorstör\, My Best Friend’s Exorcism (which is being adapted into a feature film by Amazon Studios)\, We Sold Our Souls\, and the New York Times bestseller The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires (currently being adapted into a TV series). Grady also authored the Bram Stoker Award-winning nonfiction book Paperbacks from Hell\, a history of the horror paperback boom of the seventies and eighties\, and his latest non-fiction book is These Fists Break Bricks How Kung Fu Movies Swept America and Changed the World. \nStacy Willingham is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of A Flicker in the Dark. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Kasen Wysong’s New Release: The Paths of Time
DESCRIPTION:Meet Kasen Wysong and grab a signed copy of his new release\, The Paths of Time\, the second his Mayhem series (the first\, The Colors of the Mayhem\, was a Main Street Reads fantasy hit!\n \nThe Staff of the Paths of Time has been triggered. \nAncient magic takes a handful of Wielders four hundred years into the past\, to a yet unbroken Alasdair. Despite the vast land\, glistening architecture\, and sophisticated cultures–signs of turmoil show the Path to the Mayhem is shortening. \nEmpires ten times the size of the Unnamed Island are a breath away from war. Fervent groups like the Temple of Pure threaten Florica Wielders with their magic. The Nightfall Order grows bolder as they emerge from hiding. And there lurks an even greater threat in the shadows; the Tarantula spins her webs of chaos\, entangling the world in her scheme. \nThe Travelers of the Paths of Time must learn how to navigate this new time period. Their survival depends on it–humanity depends on it. They are the prophets of doom\, harkening the Mayhem\, but desperate to stop it. Unlikely alliances form\, old flames for vengeance rekindle\, and new heroes arise. Amid it all\, three friends from Floric Academy explore the depths of their own souls–fearing what they might find. \nKasen Wysong devoured fantasy novels and these unlocked new worlds for him. He completed his first book in middle school and fell in love with the process. Almost a decade later\, Kasen discovered that book on a flash drive and decided to publish it. He dove into the story\, reworking it\, adding new portions\, and eventually splitting it into two books. The first is the Colors of the Mayhem\, and this second addition to the Mayhem Series is The Paths of Time. In many ways\, the title is reflective of Kasen’s own journey to publishing it\, as the story is deeply connected to his past. SUMMARY:Booksigning: Whatever Happens Probably Will by John MacIlroy
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special signing while you shop this weekend with John MacIlroy\, author of Whatever Happens Probably Will. \n“Fasten your seatbelt. You are about to be transported by a master storyteller . . .” – Jayne Adams\, author of For All the Right Seasons \nIn this debut collection of short stories\, John W. MacIlroy delights in teasing the moment when everything changes\, when the reader suddenly and completely knows the heart of each character and the fullness of the human experience. That slip may be gentle\, air-brushed with a sly and lighthearted wink in stories like “The Closer\,” “Customer Service\,” and “McAllister’s Asterisk.” Or it may creep in after a slow roll\, then slash across the final pages in bold strokes in stories like the award-winning “Duke’s” and “Three Buses\, Waiting.” \nAnd in others\, like “The Painting” and “The Man Inside\,” things unseen – whispered in the shadows and along the margins – suddenly explode in surprising ways\, burrowing deep into the reader’s soul. In the tradition of writers like Richard Ford\, Christopher Tilghman and T.D. Johnston\, these stories find in place an essential element of a good story. We find ourselves in a forgotten New England factory town; in a midwestern colonial along a street lined with tall oaks\, middling ambitions and short mailboxes; and in a tired cemetery along the Mississippi where the hushed voices of the buried dance among the live oaks. \nAnd in the way of the Southern writer\, these\, and the other full-bodied stories in the collection\, embrace the harsh gravitational pull of the past. And where they land – well\, as the writer Jayne Adams warns\, “Buckle up. You’re in for a ride . . .” \n“MacIlroy weaves these riches together with the skill of a born storyteller gifted with a poet’s eye.” – Douglas Campbell\, winner of the Able Muse Write Prize \nFollowing a career that spanned law\, business\, and teaching\, John W. “Mac” MacIlroy began writing creatively in 2016. After publication of his first book – Not Exactly Rocket Scientists and Other Stories\, a co-authored collection of zany and “mostly true” stories – he turned to writing short fiction.  His story “Duke’s” was named a “Best of 2019 Short Story\,” and he won the 2021 Amy Munnell Award. That year he was also named a Finalist in both the Coker Fiction Fellowship and the Excellence in Southern Lowcountry Writing competition for his story “The Man Inside.” These and other award-winning stories are included in his newest book\, Whatever Happens\, Probably Will: Stories\, which was named a Finalist in the 2022 International Books Awards in the category of Short Fiction. \nA graduate of Yale College\, Harvard\, and the University of Virginia School of Law\, he lives along a tidal creek in the LowCountry of South Carolina with his wife Linda and a painted ceramic dodo bird named duMont.
