SUMMARY:May Bestseller Book Club: A Short Walk Through a Wide World
DESCRIPTION:Super excited about this month’s pick – A Short Walk through a Wide World by debut novelist Douglas Westerbeke is part Addie LaRue\, part Starless Sea\, part Life of Pi and ALL mesmerizing! \n\n\n\nAs always\, this book club pick is available for 10% off (book club pricing) and the evening at our in-house book club includes free treats and wine – you just bring the scintillating conversation – and we expect some incredible conversation around this winner! \n\n\n\nThink The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue meets Life of Pi or A Starless Sea. This is an epic debut that chronicles an incredible life of a woman as she journeys the globe trying to outrun a curse that will kill her if she stops too long in any one place! Intriguing\, right? \n\n\n\nIt all begins in Paris in 1885\, when nine-year-old Aubry Tourvel\, a spoiled and stubborn childl\, comes across a wooden puzzle ball on her way home from school. She tosses it over the fence\, only to find it in her backpack that evening. Days later\, at the family dinner table\, she suddenly begins to bleed to death. \n\n\n\nWhen medical treatment only makes her worse\, she flees to the outskirts of the city\, where she realizes that it is this very act of movement that inexplicably keeps her alive. So begins her lifelong journey on the run from her condition\, which won’t allow her to stay anywhere for longer than a few days nor –and here’s the kicker– return to any place where she’s already been. \n\n\n\nFrom the dunes of the Calashino Sand Sea to the snow-packed peaks of the Himalayas; from a bottomless well in a Parisian courtyard\, to the shelves of an infinite underground library\, we are tethered to Aubry as she is tethered to her curse. She learns what it takes to survive and ultimately\, to truly live. But the longer Aubry wanders and the more desperate she is to share her life with others\, the clearer it becomes that the world she travels through may not be quite the same as everyone else’s… \n\n\n\nForced to be fiercely independent and yet somehow hopeful and full of longing\, Aubry becomes an unforgettable character fighting her way through a world of wonders\, all to find a safe place she can call home. This really is a spellbinding and inspiring story about discovering meaning in a life that seems otherwise impossible. And at its core\, it should remind each of us that it’s not the destination\, but rather the journey\, that makes us who we are.

Local teacher Abby Schmid is an Oklahoma native who moved to Summerville in 2021. \n\n\n\nAbby grew up loving to read and that same love of stories has followed her through all phases of life. She is currently an Elementary teacher in Dorchester District 2. \n\n\n\nWe all look forward to seeing you on Main Street! \n\n\n\nFrom New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe comes a beautiful story of friendship\, loss\, and the healing power of nature in her first book for middle grade readers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEleven-year-old Jake’s life has just turned upside-down. His father was wounded in Afghanistan\, and his mother is going to leave to care for him. That means Jake’s spending the summer on tiny Dewees Island with his grandmother. \n\n\n\nThe island is a nature sanctuary–no cars or paved roads\, no stores or restaurants. To make matters worse\, Jake’s grandmother doesn’t believe in cable or the internet\, which means Jake has no cell phone\, no video games…and no friends. \n\n\n\nThis is going to be the worst summer ever! \n\n\n\nHe’s barely on the island before he befriends two other kids–Macon\, another “summer kid\,” and Lovie\, a know-it-all who lives there and shows both Jake and Macon the ropes of life on the island. All three are struggling with their own family issues and they quickly bond\, going on adventures all over Dewees Island. \n\n\n\nUntil one misadventure on an abandoned boat leads to community service. Their punishment? Mandatory duty on the Island Turtle Team. The kids must do a daily dawn patrol of the beach on the hunt for loggerhead sea turtle tracks. \n\n\n\nWhen a turtle nest is threatened by coyotes\, the three friends must find a way to protect it. Can they save the turtle nest from predators? Can Jake’s growing love for the island and its inhabitants (be they two-legged\, four-legged\, feathered\, or finned) help to heal his father?

Sam Jenkins\, a Black man\, is found covered in blood\, kneeling over the body. In a state already roiling with racial tension\, this is not only a murder case\, but a powder keg. A haunting cold case–Two young women are murdered on quiet Edisto Beach\, an hour southeast of Walterboro\, and the killer disappears without a trace. Thirty-four years later the mystery remains unsolved. Could there be a connection to Stander’s case? A killer who’s watching–Stander takes on Jenkins’s defense\, but he’s up against a formidable solicitor with powerful allies. Worse\, his client is hiding a bombshell secret. When Addie Stone reopens the cold case\, she discovers more long-buried secrets in this small town. As an adolescent\, she devoured classics like Old Yeller and The Yearling\, discovered Agatha Christie and Steven King in her teenage years\, and\, later\, was mesmerized reading thrillers by authors including John Grisham\, Michael Connelly\, Karin Slaughter and Mary Kubica. \n\n\n\nHer dedication to the written word led her to law school at the University of South Carolina\, where she earned her degree in 1991. She is certified by the South Carolina Supreme Court as a specialist in labor and employment law and is the founding partner of Cleveland & Conley\, LLC. \n\n\n\nCaroline draws on her rich and varied life experience working in the law for her writing. She elaborates\, “Law school students are warned the first day that the law is a jealous mistress\, and there is a reason for that. But I have always made time to read for pleasure. Eventually\, it dawned on me that I\, too\, have entertaining and powerful stories to tell. As a writer\, I gravitate toward mystery and suspense\, as I cannot resist a character who has a dark secret or is wrestling with inner demons. I have lived in the South all my life\, so my stories inevitably come from a Southern perspective\, featuring deceptively peaceful small towns and strong\, complex characters who rely on their Southern sense of values.”

SUMMARY:Book Signing: The Final Victory by Roger Jones
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to host Roger Jones\, author of the brand new hit\, The Final Victory\, in-store on Sunday afternoon\, May 5th! Read on for more on this incredible release and its inspiring author: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a novel that fuses the riveting action of The Boys in the Boat with the emotional heft of The Fault in Our Stars\, twenty cancer patients compete in a grueling race only to discover that real victory is achieved within. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter he is diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer\, Tripp Avery feels like all is lost. He finds himself coaching a team of twelve men and eight women with cancer diagnoses of their own\, hoping to qualify for the Mixed Masters Dragon Boat national championship and defy their prognoses. If they win\, they will represent the United States at the International Dragon Boat races in Hong Kong. \n\n\n\nBut things soon get complicated\, as four of his teammates struggle against their physical limitations and the psychological weight of their conditions. In the summer heat of Chattanooga\, their resolve grows thin–along with Tripp’s patience. After a devastating loss to the defending national champions\, Tripp can only see the finish line\, and he pushes the team even harder. Soon\, the team starts to fall apart. \n\n\n\nAs members of the team collapse under the pressure and one is hospitalized\, Tripp must confront his failings and find a way to move forward. He begins to question his motives\, wondering if the win is worth the trauma and what that says about him. Despite the odds\, he resolves to rally the team toward a comeback that seems impossible\, if only for one final victory. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRoger Jones\, businessman\, philanthropist\, humanitarian and avid athlete has founded numerous business and community organizations. In 1996\, he started Companion Associates\, Inc.\, one of South Carolina’s largest privately held real estate development firms. He has helped establish and launch non-profit organizations including Reading Partners of South Carolina\, Charleston Social Venture Partners\, and The Charleston Paddle Club. \n\n\n\nDuring a 2012 trip to East Germany to receive a newly developed intensive radiation treatment for Neuroendocrine Cancer\, Roger decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. The Final Victory is his first novel. Married for forty-seven years\, Roger is the proud father of three children and grandfather of three grandchildren.

SUMMARY:April Bestsellers Book Club: The Women by Kristin Hannah
DESCRIPTION:We’re delighted to be featuring The Women by Kristin Hannah in this month’s bestsellers book club. As always\, the book is available at 10% off special book club pricing. Our clubs are free and open to all – you bring the conversation\, we’ll supply the treats! \n\n\n\nA #1 bestseller on The New York Times\, USA Today\, Washington Post\, and Los Angeles Times! From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah’s The Women–at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided. \n\n\n\nWomen can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words\, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched\, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents\, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. \n\n\n\nBut in 1965\, the world is changing\, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam\, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path. As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight\, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. \n\n\n\nEach day is a gamble of life and death\, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war\, she meets–and becomes one of–the lucky\, the brave\, the broken\, and the lost. But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. \n\n\n\nThe real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America\, to angry protesters\, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war\, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. \n\n\n\nA novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism\, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over\, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House\, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. \n\n\n\nBut in the aftermath of her death\, her adopted son\, Camden\, wants little to do with the house or the money–and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes. Instead\, he rejects his inheritance\, settling into a normal life as an English teacher in Colorado and marrying Jules\, a woman just as eager to escape her own messy past. \n\n\n\nTen years later\, his uncle’s death pulls Cam and Jules back into the family fold at Ashby House. Its views are just as stunning as ever\, its rooms just as elegant\, but the legacy of Ruby is inescapable. And as Ashby House tightens its grip on Jules and Camden\, questions about the infamous heiress come to light. \n\n\n\nWas there any truth to the persistent rumors following her disappearance as a girl? What really happened to those four husbands\, who all died under mysterious circumstances? And why did she adopt Cam in the first place? \n\n\n\nSoon\, Jules and Cam realize that an inheritance can entail far more than what’s written in a will–and that the bonds of family stretch far beyond the grave.

SUMMARY:February Living Large Book Club: Blackouts by Justin Torres
DESCRIPTION:For all you fans of the incomparable Justin Torres and his debut hit\, We the Animals\, he’s back with Blackouts\, which we chose even before we knew it had won the National Book Award! We’re excited to discuss this one – hope you are\, too. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs always\, the book is available at our 10% off book club discount. We’ll bring the eats and drink – y’all bring your insights – this is going to be quite a discussion! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWinner of the National Book Award for Fiction A Best Book of the Year: The New York Times Book Review\, NPR\, The Washington Post\, Time\, BookPage\, The New York Public Library\, Powell’s A Must-Read: The New York Times\, Time\, Los Angeles Times\, Chicago Tribune\, The Guardian\, Boston Herald\, Literary Hub\, The Rumpus\, The Bay Area Reporter\, Datebook\, Electric Literature\, The Stacks\, Them\, Publishers Weekly \n\n\n\n\n“Sweeping\, ingenious . . . A kiss to build a dream on.” \n–Maureen Corrigan\, NPR’s Fresh Air\n\n\n\nFrom the bestselling author of We the Animals\, Blackouts mines lost histories–personal and collective. Out in the desert in a place called the Palace\, a young man tends to a dying soul\, someone he once knew briefly but who has haunted the edges of his life: Juan Gay. Playful raconteur\, child lost and found and lost\, guardian of the institutionalized\, Juan has a project to pass along\, one built around a true artifact of a book–Sex Variants: A Study of Homosexual Patterns–and its devastating history. \n\n\n\nThis book contains accounts collected in the early twentieth century from queer subjects by a queer researcher\, Jan Gay\, whose groundbreaking work was then co-opted by a committee\, her name buried. The voices of these subjects have been filtered\, muted\, but it is possible to hear them from within and beyond the text\, which\, in Juan’s tattered volumes\, has been redacted with black marker on nearly every page. \n\n\n\nAs Juan waits for his end\, he and the narrator recount for each other moments of joy and oblivion; they resurrect loves\, lives\, mothers\, fathers\, minor heroes. In telling their own stories and the story of the book\, they resist the ravages of memory and time. The past is with us\, beside us\, ahead of us; what are we to create from its gaps and erasures? \n\n\n\nA book about storytelling–its legacies\, dangers\, delights\, and potential for change–and a bold exploration of form\, art\, and love\, Justin Torres’s Blackouts uses fiction to see through the inventions of history and narrative. \n\n\n\nA marvel of creative imagination\, it draws on testimony\, photographs\, illustrations\, and a range of influences as it insists that we look long and steadily at what we have inherited and what we have made–a world full of ghostly shadows and flashing moments of truth. \n\n\n\nA reclamation of ransacked history\, a celebration of defiance\, and a transformative encounter\, Blackouts mines the stories that have been kept from us and brings them into the light.

SUMMARY:February Thrill in the 'Ville: Anna O by Matthew Blake
DESCRIPTION:Our February thriller book club will be dishing on Anna O by Matthew Blake. As always\, the book is at the 10% off book club price in-store\, and we’ll have treats and libations to lubricate the conversations 🙂 \n\n\n\nThis book is already being touted as one of THE thrillers of the year – for anyone who enjoyed Alex Michelaides’ The Silent Patient\, we know you’ll love this one! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoining the ranks of Gillian Flynn\, A. J. Finn\, and Alex Michaelides\, Matthew Blake delivers the thriller of the year: a dark\, twisty\, and shocking mystery about a young woman who commits a double murder while sleepwalking\, and then never opens her eyes again. \n\n\n\nWhat if your nightmares weren’t really nightmares at all? \n\n\n\nWe spend an average of 33 years of our lives asleep. But what really happens\, and what are we capable of\, when we sleep? \n\n\n\n\n“A riveting\, unsettling crime novel that will keep you turning pages well past your bedtime. Is Anna O a sleeping beauty or a sleeping killer? Matthew Blake’s tension-filled thriller is as elusive and mysterious as sleep itself.” \n—Nita Prose\, #1 New York Times author of The Maid and The Mystery Guest\n\n\n\nAnna Ogilvy was a budding twenty-five-year-old writer with a bright future. Then\, one night\, she stabbed two people to death with no apparent motive–and hasn’t woken up since. Dubbed “Sleeping Beauty” by the tabloids\, Anna’s condition is a rare psychosomatic disorder known to neurologists as “resignation syndrome.” \n\n\n\nDr. Benedict Prince is a forensic psychologist and an expert in the field of sleep-related homicides. His methods are the last hope of solving the infamous “Anna O'”case and waking Anna up so she can stand trial. But he must be careful treating such a high-profile suspect–he’s got career secrets and a complicated personal life of his own. \n\n\n\nAs Anna shows the first signs of stirring\, Benedict must determine what really happened and whether Anna should be held responsible for her crimes. \n\n\n\nOnly Anna knows the truth about that night\, but only Benedict knows how to discover it. And they’re both in danger from what they find out. \n\n\n\nMatthew Blake is a London-based author who has also worked as a screenwriter with the BBC\, ITV Studios\, and numerous other UK indies. \n\n\n\nCan’t make the live? SUMMARY:Living Large Book Club January 2024: Let Us Descend
DESCRIPTION:Our first Living Large bestsellers book club selection of 2024 will by Jesmyn Ward’s hit and newest Southern Fiction award winner\, Let Us Descend. As always\, book clubs are free and open to all – you bring the chat\, we’ll supply the treats – and the book is available in-store at the 10% off book club price! \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK – Instant New York Times Bestseller – Shortlisted for the 2024 Carnegie Medal for Excellence \n\n\n\nFrom Jesmyn Ward–the two-time National Book Award winner\, youngest winner of the Library of Congress Prize for American Fiction\, and MacArthur Fellow–comes a haunting masterpiece\, sure to be an instant classic\, about an enslaved girl in the years before the Civil War. \n\n\n\n“‘Let us descend\, ‘ the poet now began\, ‘and enter this blind world.'” —Inferno\, Dante Alighieri Let Us Descend is a reimagining of American slavery\, as beautifully rendered as it is heart-wrenching. Searching\, harrowing\, replete with transcendent love\, the novel is a journey from the rice fields of the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and into the fearsome heart of a Louisiana sugar plantation. \n\n\n\nAnnis\, sold south by the white enslaver who fathered her\, is the reader’s guide through this hellscape. As she struggles through the miles-long march\, Annis turns inward\, seeking comfort from memories of her mother and stories of her African warrior grandmother. Throughout\, she opens herself to a world beyond this world\, one teeming with spirits: of earth and water\, of myth and history; spirits who nurture and give\, and those who manipulate and take. \n\n\n\nWhile Ward leads readers through the descent\, this\, her fourth novel\, is ultimately a story of rebirth and reclamation. From one of the most singularly brilliant and beloved writers of her generation\, this miracle of a novel inscribes Black American grief and joy into the very land–the rich but unforgiving forests\, swamps\, and rivers of the American South. \n\n\n\nLet Us Descend is Jesmyn Ward’s most magnificent novel yet\, a masterwork for the ages.

Especially excited about this one\, readers\, since Angie and I had the privilege of serving on Charleston’s Center for Women board together – and she’s fantastic! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBy age 25\, Angie Mizzell was a morning news anchor at a top-rated television station. She had married her college sweetheart\, and scenes from their wedding day ran on the evening news. She’d achieved everything her mom had wanted for her and what she thought she wanted for herself. \n\n\n\nBut after signing with an agent who promised to take her career to the next level\, Angie began to realize that a future in the spotlight would not dim a past filled with childhood trauma and loss. As a television journalist\, she’d made a living by exploring and reporting other people’s stories; it was time to examine her own. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn her coming-of-age memoir\, “Girl in the Spotlight\,” Angie shares a heartfelt and hopeful story of arriving at a crossroads\, getting lost in the darkness\, learning to let go\, and finding her way back home. \n\n\n\nAngie Mizzell is a writer\, a mom and a former local TV news anchor. She’s the author of “Hello Friday\,” a weekly newsletter on Substack where she explores ways to feel at home where we live\, in our relationships\, in our work and within. She lives in West Ashley with her husband and their three children.

SUMMARY:Fab Fantasy Bookclub: Iron Flame!
DESCRIPTION:Ahhh…Iron Flame\, the much-anticipated sequel to Fourth Wing is here and it’s the December book club pick! As always\, book club is free and open to all – we bring the treats\, you bring the lively discussion! \n\n\n\n“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” –Xaden Riorson Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College–Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed\, the unworthy\, and the unlucky. Now the real training begins\, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal\, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. \n\n\n\nIt’s the new vice commandant\, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is-unless she betrays the man she loves. Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s\, she still has her wits–and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules. But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College–and nothing\, not even dragon fire\, may be enough to save them in the end. \n\n\n\nThe Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.Reading Order:Book #1 Fourth WingBook #2 Iron Flame

SUMMARY:Bestsellers Book Club: The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman - WED This Month!
DESCRIPTION:This month\, because of Tuesday’s tree lighting and festivities in the square\, the Living Large Bookclub has decided to meet on Wednesday\, one day later\, November 29th. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be chatting about the newest hit by Alice Hoffman\, The Invisible Hour. As always\, book clubs are free and open to all\, and the book is eligible for the 10% book club discount. Refreshments will be served\, come join the fun! \n\n\n\nFrom the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and the Practical Magic series comes an enchanting novel about love\, heartbreak\, self-discovery\, and the enduring magic of books. \n\n\n\nOne brilliant June day when Mia Jacob can no longer see a way to survive\, the power of words saves her. The Scarlet Letter was written almost two hundred years earlier\, but it seems to tell the story of Mia’s mother\, Ivy\, and their life inside the Community–an oppressive cult in western Massachusetts where contact with the outside world is forbidden\, and books are considered evil. But how could this be? How could Nathaniel Hawthorne have so perfectly captured the pain and loss that Mia carries inside her? \n\n\n\nThrough a journey of heartbreak\, love\, and time\, Mia must abandon the rules she was raised with at the Community. As she does\, she realizes that reading can transport you to other worlds or bring them to you\, and that readers and writers affect one another in mysterious ways. She learns that time is more fluid than she can imagine\, and that love is stronger than any chains that bind you. As a girl Mia fell in love with a book. Now as a young woman she falls in love with a brilliant writer as she makes her way back in time. \n\n\n\nBut what if Nathaniel Hawthorne never wrote The Scarlet Letter? And what if Mia Jacob never found it on the day she planned to die? Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote: “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.” This is the story of one woman’s dream. For a little while it came true…

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Reading Jane with Susannah Kennedy!
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be a part of this eastern leg of Susannah’s tour – come join in the fun and enjoy refreshments and some stimulating conversation. The book will be available to be signed by the author that day! \n\n\n\nReading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir and the book tour “Surviving the Narcissistic Mother” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the estimation of narcissism and its impact on children grows\, more people are identifying as the children of such an upbringing. They have been raised by a parent whose sense of self-importance overshadowed the child\, the child existing rather as an extension of a parental self that lacks empathy and often exploits their child. It’s estimated that nearly 60 million people are damaged by such relational patterns. Children of such parents are vulnerable to poor self-esteem\, lack of boundaries\, and co-dependence. \n\n\n\nHaving emerged on the other side of this phenomenon\, Susannah Kennedy\, author of Reading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir has launched her book tour along the East Coast. The tour includes a stop at Main Street Reads in Summerville!\, where she’ll sign copies as well as address her path to healing. It wasn’t an easy one\, and might not have been achieved at all had Susannah’s mother not inexplicably taken her own life at age 75. When Susannah discovered 45 years of Jane’s diaries\, she had a portal into the narrative her mother created and lived. \n\n\n\nSusannah avoided plunging in for three years\, until she was driven to do so\, to understand finally the mystery her mother presented. What emerges is Susannah’s own story in contrast to her mother’s\, and ultimately leads her to finally shake off the constraints set by Jane’s need to control both the narrative and her daughter. \n\n\n\nPrevious events on the West Coast leg of the tour have demonstrated that Susannah is not alone. Nearly 5 percent or 1 in 200 people suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the sons and daughters are showing up at book events — to take from Susannah’s story of healing the hope they might finally understand and heal their own. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Jane: Surviving the Narcissistic Mother Eastern Seaboard Tour will encompass 12 cities in October and November 2023: Boston and Gloucester\, Massachusetts; Newport\, Rhode Island; Owego and Woodstock\, New York; Washington D.C.; Montrose and Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Charlotte\, North Carolina; Hilton Head Island and Summerville\, South Carolina; and Savannah\, Georgia. For details on dates\, times\, and locations\, please visit www.sibyllinepress.com or www.susannahkennedy.com. Main Street Reads at 115 S. Main Street in Summerville will host Susannah on November 19th from 1-3 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist Susannah Kennedy was born in India and raised in the United States. Later\, she traveled extensively on her own\, first in Italy\, and then through the Middle East and India\, settling for two years in Egypt before becoming a reporter in Dallas\, Texas. At Oxford University\, she specialized in Arab culture and politics\, receiving her DPhil in social anthropology. She and her psychoanalyst husband lived and worked in Germany\, raising three children in a thatched-roof farmhouse in the countryside outside Hamburg. Her mother’s suicide and its aftermath brought them back to California in 2017. They now reside in Marin County.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author! Steve Lazarus Signing Call Me Sonny
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special thriller book signing with Steve Lazarus\, debut of the new thriller\, Call Me Sonny. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShortly after a corrupt attorney pays a visit to an inmate in a maximum security federal prison\, people from the inmate’s past start dying.  Bryce Chandler\, a retired FBI agent eking out a living as a private investigator in the Florida Keys\, ties the string of killings to a shadowy murder-for-hire ring operating on the Dark Web.  As Bryce digs further into the murders\, he discovers the final name on the hit list is his own. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, a simple divorce case turns out to be much more than meets the eye\, as Bryce’s investigation of the defendant leads him down a path of international drug smuggling\, money laundering\, and violent henchmen bent on keeping him silent.  The two storylines run parallel to one another until they eventually converge in a final\, bloody outcome.  \n\n\n\n\n“Bryce Chandler is a compelling addition to the pantheon of hard-boiled fictional detectives. Lazarus puts his experience as an FBI agent to good use in Call Me Sonny\, and the book feels more realistic than most detective novels. Impossible to put down!” \n—Joe Weisberg\, Emmy Award-winning writer and creator of The Americans\n\n\n\nSteve’s debut novel was inspired by one of his real-life cases. After arresting a subject who threatened to unleash a bioterror attack on the Atlanta subway system\, Steve and his partner found themselves on the receiving end of a death threat from the soon-to-be convicted felon. And though that subject would spend the next 25 years in prison\, Steve couldn’t help but wonder…what if he could make good on his threat\, even from behind bars? The most logical solution would be if he hired a hit man\, and…voila! A novel was born. Written over the course of a year in Abu Dhabi\, the Florida Keys\, and Texas hill country\, “Call Me Sonny” was a labor of love incorporating the personalities\, anecdotes\, and experiences of Steve’s multi-faceted FBI career\, and if things work out as planned\, it will be the first in a series of Bryce Chandler crime thrillers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Lazarus is a first-time author\, retired FBI Special Agent\, and United States Air Force veteran.  He served twenty-two years in the FBI\, spending the first half of his career investigating drug trafficking organizations and violent street gangs.  Later\, he became a full-time bomb technician\, an assignment which led him to Iraq\, Kuwait and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror.  After retiring from the Bureau\, he spent several years as a national security contractor in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates. Steve lives on the South Carolina coast with his wife Susan and their amazing wonder dog\, Aspen.
