SUMMARY:Living Large Book Club: Groundskeeping by Lee Cole
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to have a chance to chat about this wonderful book Grounds-keeping by Lee Cole – join us live – refreshments will be served! \nA TODAY SHOW #ReadWithJenna BOOK CLUB PICK – \nAn indelible love story about two very different people navigating the entanglements of class and identity and coming of age in an America coming apart at the seams–this is an extraordinary debut about the ties that bind families together and tear them apart across generations (Ann Patchett\, best-selling author of The Dutch House). \nIn the run-up to the 2016 election\, Owen Callahan\, an aspiring writer\, moves back to Kentucky to live with his Trump-supporting uncle and grandfather. Eager to clean up his act after wasting time and potential in his early twenties\, he takes a job as a groundskeeper at a small local college\, in exchange for which he is permitted to take a writing course. \nHere he meets Alma Hazdic\, a writer in residence who seems to have everything that Owen lacks–a prestigious position\, an Ivy League education\, success as a writer. They begin a secret relationship\, and as they grow closer\, Alma–who comes from a liberal family of Bosnian immigrants–struggles to understand Owen’s fraught relationship with family and home. \nExquisitely written; expertly crafted; dazzling in its precision\, restraint\, and depth of feeling\, Groundskeeping is a novel of haunting power and grace from a prodigiously gifted young writer.

SUMMARY:Thriller Book Club: The Fields by Erin Young

SUMMARY:Book Signing / Talk: Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth
DESCRIPTION:We are honored to host this signing and book discussion around the brand new release from Charleston’s own Evening Post Books: Ukweli: Searching for Healing Truth. \nYou’ll get to meet Summerville’s own Herb Frazier as well as contributing authors from the project\, and we plan to engage in a substantive discussion… don’t miss this one\, folks. \nUkweli is the Swahili word for truth. This book meets this moment in America as a healing truth to overcome the trauma of slavery and the decades of violence that followed it. The personal accounts and insights from forty-five writers and poets will educate White Americans about the systematic racial bias employed to stymie African American progress. \nUkweli provides insight into the struggles Black people have faced as they’ve made substantial contributions to America\, and helped to define its soul. It shows a part of American history often overlooked or misunderstood. Inspired by a poetry\, lecture\, and dialogue series of the same name organized by poet Horace Mungin in 2020 at Charleston’s McLeod Plantation\, Evening Post Books released Ukweli in February 2022. \nFollowing the signing from 3-4\, we’ll have an open discussion (refreshments served). This is a limited seating event – the link to register is https://www.eventbrite.com/e/book-signing-talk-ukweli-searching-for-healing-truth-tickets-312465762507 \nHerb Frazier is special projects editor at the Charleston City Paper\, a weekly newspaper in his hometown. He’s an author and the former marketing director at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens in Charleston. He has edited and reported for five daily newspapers in the South. When he was on the staff of The Post and Courier in Charleston he was named the S.C. Press Association’s 1990 Journalist of the Year. He is a former Michigan Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan. He has led journalism workshops in Africa and South America for a federal agency and a Washington\, D.C.-based journalism foundation. He is a member of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Meet Jack Russell and Fox World
DESCRIPTION: “I hope that everyone who cares about the future of planet Earth will fight to save places like Fox World’s forest and its inhabitants.” – Dr. Jane Goodall\n\nJoin us for a very special book signing with Jack Russell\, the author of the entertaining and insightful Fox World.\n\nBased on true events\, Fox World takes the reader under the canopy of an urban forest on the outskirts of Washington\, D.C. for a year-long walk with a weary sales executive and his muse\, a wild red fox.  Aged\, ill and injured\, both fox and man seek healing in their journey\, not only for themselves\, but for the ecologically stressed forest that is under siege by those set to exploit it.\n\nThey are joined on their five-hundred-mile walkabout by the fox’s forest friends – owl\, buck deer\, hawk\, blue heron\, and raccoon\, and each animal’s story illustrates why this small forest is so soothing and majestic in its allure.  Starting in brutally cold winter\, followed by the hottest\, wettest summer on record\, fox and man face daunting life challenges in their walks\, from a heart attack and arrhythmia which end the executive’s career to a coyote attack and serious illnesses faced by the elderly fox.\nAnd through these debilitating and traumatic events\, the two unite and bond for survival\, and the fox’s wild perspective teaches his human friend unforgettable lessons about healing\, coping\, serenity\, wonderment\, mindfulness\, and the simplest things (e.g.\, the sun setting atop the great oaks\, an owl serenade under moonbeams\, a shared cup of bison bone broth on an icy day).\nDrawn in by the fox’s courage and the plight of his forest as tree canopy destruction looms\, the man decides to take a stand and help the fox and his animal friends.\n\nRichly graced with gorgeous nature photos and infused with insights that can only be imparted by those who have come to genuinely appreciate life\, Fox World is an exhilarating walk in the woods that you’ll never forget.\n\n\n“As a wildlife rehabilitator who works hands-on with red foxes every day\, this book took my breath away. The author truly grasps the essence and magic of these beautiful\, spiritual animals and he artfully employs a fox\, Mr. Fox\, as a co-narrator to describe the hardscrabble challenges of a fox in the wild. Fox World is a bookshelf staple for fox lovers and –for those who have been graced only once with seeing a distant fox walking the wood’s edge\, and desire more– Fox World will transport you there.” – Elise Able\, Founder\, Fox Wood Wildlife Rescue\, foxwoodwildliferescue.org\n\nJack Russell is a first-time author\, not counting dozens of hundred-page PowerPoints written in Corporate World. Jack wrote Fox World after suffering sudden cardiac arrest and undergoing several heart procedures to save his life.  Afterwards\, he sought the calm refuge of a nearby forest in which to walk and relax\, and there\, he reunited with an aging red fox that he had helped as a pup.  Fox World is based on true events and was a real-time composition as Jack wrote the 85\,000-word book on his smartphone as he and his co-narrator\, Mr. Fox\, walked daily. He lives in Lake Frederick\, Virginia with his wife\, Susan\, and their Jack Russell terriers.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: What's Burning on the Inside with Lakosha Wade
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sunday\, March 27th from 2 – 4 pm to meet local author Lakosha Wade and engage in discussion of her 21 day guided journal and devotional\, What’s Burning on the Inside. \nMany people burn candles and incense in their homes\, businesses\, and other places. Sometimes the candles are for beauty\, aromatherapy\, or just to create a good mood. I’m sure many people have lit candles for all of these reasons and more\, but there is another reason to light candles that most people don’t know about. There is a hidden spiritual meaning behind lighting candles that will help you grow closer to God. \nWhat is inside the candle is what makes it fragrant. The more fragrant it is\, the more value it has. What if we have God inside of us? Then\, won’t He give off a sweet smell that attracts others to us? \nSaid Lakosha\, “When God is inside of us\, and we burn with his love and light\, we become the sweet fragrance that draws other people to Him. We can’t just expect God to give us this life without doing anything for it ourselves. We need to “burn” with his desire and passion for people and attract them to our lives through Christ’s light within us.” \nLakosha Wade is a first-time author\, born and raised in the small town of Estill SC. She is a wife and mother of two. Professionally she works as a nurse with hospice. She is passionate to serve others through her relationship with God; During her free time\, she enjoys reading\, playing games\, and shopping.

All these questions as well as many as-yet-unasked ones will be answered within the pages of The Charleston Tea Party. \nMeet the author and get a signed copy at Main Street Reads!

SUMMARY:Living Large Bookclub: The Violin Conspiracy
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Living Large Bookclub will take place on the 4th Tuesday of the month and feature a chat around the new incredible debut novel\, The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb. Grab it from Main Street Reads or our online shop HERE... \nGrowing up Black in rural North Carolina\, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. If he’s lucky\, he’ll get a job at the hospital cafeteria. If he’s extra lucky\, he’ll earn more than minimum wage. But Ray has a gift and a dream–he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist\, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother\, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music. \nWhen he discovers that his great-great-grandfather’s beat-up old fiddle is actually a priceless Stradivarius\, all his dreams suddenly seem within reach. Together\, Ray and his violin take the world by storm. But on the eve of the renowned and cutthroat Tchaikovsky Competition–the Olympics of classical music–the violin is stolen\, a ransom note for five million dollars left in its place. Ray will have to piece together the clues to recover his treasured Strad … before it’s too late. \nWith the descendants of the man who once enslaved Ray’s great-great-grandfather asserting that the instrument is rightfully theirs\, and with his family staking their own claim\, Ray doesn’t know who he can trust–or whether he will ever see his beloved violin again.

SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Diane Chamberlain's The Last House on the Street
DESCRIPTION:Our first Reader Meet Writer event of 2022. Register to attend HERE! Diane Chamberlain was 14 in the summer of 1964\, when she learned about three young civil rights workers who were murdered in Mississippi\, at the hands of the Ku Klux Klan\, while volunteering to work on voter registration\, education\, and civil rights. It was an event that had a profound impact on Chamberlain\, and led to her interest in the 1965 SCOPE project\, in which white college students\, primarily from the North\, traveled to the South to help register Black voters. That project is what inspired and informed her unmissable and timely new book\, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE STREET\, in which the fight for voting rights provides the backdrop for the story of one young woman’s passion to do what she knows in her heart is right. \n1965: Growing up in the well-to-do town of Round Hill\, North Carolina\, Ellie Hockley was raised to be a certain type of proper Southern lady. Enrolled in college and all but engaged to a bank manager\, Ellie isn’t as committed to her expected future as her family believes. She’s chosen to spend her summer break as a volunteer helping to register Black voters. But as Ellie follows her ideals fighting for the civil rights of the marginalized\, her scandalized parents scorn her efforts\, and her neighbors reveal their prejudices. And when she finds herself falling for a fellow volunteer\, Ellie discovers the frightening true nature of the people living in Round Hill. \n2010: Architect Kayla Carter and her husband designed a beautiful house for themselves in Round Hill’s new development\, Shadow Ridge Estates. It was supposed to be a home where they could raise their three-year-old daughter and grow old together. Instead\, it’s the place where Kayla’s husband died in a tragic accident\, and vandals leave threatening notes. And Kayla’s neighbor Ellie Hockley is harboring secrets about the dark history of the land where her house was built. \nThis is the sixth book by Diane Chamberlain that I’ve had the pleasure to work on\, and I can honestly say that it is by far the best. Early readers seem to agree. As I write this letter\, the book has a 4.5 star average on Goodreads\, with over 375 ratings\, and over 275 reviews. I urge you to read it and review it this January.

His practical and sensible wife\, Grace\, keeps him grounded.  Embark upon a fun-filled and hilarious journey through the aisles of Publix supermarket to the frustration of Daylight Saving Time. Dalton and Grace are familiar faces experiencing life’s oftentimes silly mundanity\, and when you add in their adorable and sassy Aunt Toogie\, you have a real southern treat! \nWant to try a special treat from the book? \nGRACE’S CRANBERRY MARGARITAS\nINGREDIENTS               \n\n1 ½ Cups (6 oz.) fresh or frozen cranberries\, rinsed\n¾ Cup lime juice (preferably fresh squeezed)\n1 Cup cranberry juice cocktail\n¾ Cup Tequila\n½ Cup Triple Sec or Grand Marnier\n½ Cup sugar\nIce cubes (around 2-3 cups)\nLime wedges\n\n\nPREPARING THE GLASSES \n\nPour some sugar (not the ½ cup above) into a saucer.\nWet the Margarita (or other wide-mouth) glass rim with lime or cranberry juice.\nDip into the  Sugar to coat the rim.\n\n\nMAKING THE MARGARITAS              \n\nPut the ingredients (except the lime wedges) into a blender.\nPut the ice 01+ Cubes in last so as to fill up the blender.\nTurn on a high speed\, such as “Liquefy.”\nWhen the ice and berries are pulverized\, serve.\nGarnish the glass with a lime wedge.\nENJOY!

SUMMARY:Launch Party: Promise by Regina E. Williams
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for a special book launch and book-signing with Summerville’s own newest debut author Regina E. Williams for a story collection that will have you laughing\, have you crying\, but most of all… have you thinking. \nWe come into this life knowing what brings us pleasure and pain; what we want and need. We are then taught to distrust what we know. It is only in the university of life that we slowly regain our knowing\, where we begin to again trust our instincts and those things our bodies tell us to be true; where we experience pain\, joy\, grief\, pleasures and hopefully love. \nThese stories cover a span of many years\, situations and locales but the reality is that place matters only in our consciousness\, in our memories; a holding place. Each tale offers a brief reflection of some of those markers on the journey from self to self. \nRegina E. Williams is a poet\, writer\, and writing consultant whose poetry and fiction have appeared worldwide. She has performed her work nationally in high schools\, colleges\, churches\, as well as on national radio. She has participated in various panel discussions and dialogues on issues relating to the black community\, Womanism\, and writing. \n\As an associate with Writer’s Insight\, a writing consultant agency\, Regina designed and conducted writing workshops for students and teachers in high schools\, colleges\, and various civic and community institutions and organizations. She also served as a Managing Editor for Metro Exchange a monthly newspaper published by Intergroup Marketing & Communications\, Inc.Regina is a founding member of Metamorphosis Writer’s Collective and “Ain’t I a Woman” Writers Collective\, and a member of New Renaissance Writers Guild\, and New Bones\, a promotion/production group designed to promote black literature and music. Regina grew up in an immigrant community in Brooklyn\, New York. \nShe quickly became fascinated with people: the climates and typography of the countries they came from\, the musicality or lack of such in the languages they spoke\, the uniqueness of the clothes they wore\, the different spicing of their foods; the discovery that everyone did not worship as her family did. Her curiosity led her to travel to many places to broaden her understanding of global customs\, art\, and culture.

SUMMARY:Living Large Bookclub November: Apples Never Fall
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be featuring Liane Moriarty’s latest release\, Apples Never Fall\, for our November book club discussion. Moriarty has already thrilled readers with Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers – we can’t wait to chat about the latest from this brilliant author! (More on the book below…) \nOur Living Large bestsellers bookclub is open to all – refreshments served. Join us LIVE or if you prefer by Zoom using the following link: \nTo Join via Zoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85213266830?pwd=WW5DYUhmYVhNd3J0b2V3d2pVcGVCUT09 \nMeeting ID: 852 1326 6830\nPasscode: 546536 \nFrom Liane Moriarty\, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers\, comes Apples Never Fall\, a novel that looks at marriage\, siblings\, and how the people we love the most can hurt us the deepest. \nThe Delaney family love one another dearly—it’s just that sometimes they want to murder each other . . . \nIf your mother was missing\, would you tell the police? Even if the most obvious suspect was your father? \nThis is the dilemma facing the four grown Delaney siblings. \nThe Delaneys are fixtures in their community. The parents\, Stan and Joy\, are the envy of all of their friends. They’re killers on the tennis court\, and off it their chemistry is palpable. But after fifty years of marriage\, they’ve finally sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. So why are Stan and Joy so miserable? \nThe four Delaney children–Amy\, Logan\, Troy\, and Brooke–were tennis stars in their own right\, yet as their father will tell you\, none of them had what it took to go all the way. But that’s okay\, now that they’re all successful grown-ups and there is the wonderful possibility of grandchildren on the horizon. \nOne night a stranger named Savannah knocks on Stan and Joy’s door\, bleeding after a fight with her boyfriend. The Delaneys are more than happy to give her the small kindness she sorely needs. If only that was all she wanted. \nLater\, when Joy goes missing\, and Savannah is nowhere to be found\, the police question the one person who remains: Stan. But for someone who claims to be innocent\, he\, like many spouses\, seems to have a lot to hide. Two of the Delaney children think their father is innocent\, two are not so sure–but as the two sides square off against each other in perhaps their biggest match ever\, all of the Delaneys will start to reexamine their shared family history in a very new light.

And as the summer unfolds\, they find themselves learning some important lessons about each other\, and the world. \nLike what it means to be your true self and how to be a good ally for others. SUMMARY:Reader Meet Writer: Beth Gilstrap in Conversation with Wiley Cash - "Deadheading and Other Stories" (Virtual Event)
DESCRIPTION:Join us via Zoom for a special event on Tuesday\, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. ET: \nMEET Beth Gilstrap\, author of Deadheading and Other Stories. Irrevocably tied to the Carolinas\, these stories tell tales of the woebegone\, their obsessions with decay\, and the haunting ache of the region itself–the land of the dwindling pines\, the isolation inherent in the mountains and foothills\, and the loneliness of boomtowns. Predominantly working-class women challenge the status quo by rejecting any lingering expectations or romantic notions of Southern femininity. Small businesses are failing. Factories are closing. Money is tight. The threat of violence lingers for women and girls. Through their collective grief\, heartache\, and unsettling circumstances\, many of these characters become feral and hell-bent on survival. \nGilstrap’s prose teems with wildness and lyricism\, showing the Southern gothic tradition of storytelling is alive and feverishly unwell in the twenty-first century. \nFrom the brokenhearted to the afflicted\, the women in these often macabre stories fight like hell to find their voices and survive the darkness inherent in the modern South. Beth will be in conversation with Wiley Cash and you get a front row seat via our Zoom link below. \nBeth Gilstrap is the author of I Am Barbarella (2015) from Twelve Winters Press. Her work has been selected as Longform.org’s “Fiction Pick of the Week” and chosen by Dan Chaon for inclusion in the Best Microfiction Anthology 2019. She holds an MFA from Chatham University. Her stories\, essays\, and hybrids have appeared in Ninth Letter\, the Minnesota Review\, Denver Quarterly\, Gulf Stream Lit\, and Wigleaf\, among others. Born and raised in the Charlotte area\, she has recently relocated to Louisville. \nJoin the conversation at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_VCuQyCpeTPiJbaqdPnT-GQ
