SUMMARY:Thrill in the 'Ville: February Thriller Book Club - All the Dangerous Things
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Valentine’s Day for some cheer\, treats and discussion of Stacy Willingham’s new hit\, All The Dangerous Things – we’re super excited to chat about the book (and meet with Stacy and Grady Hendrix on February 25th too!) \nWe’ll see you on Main Street… \nFollowing up her instant New York Times bestseller\, A Flicker in the Dark\, Stacy Willingham delivers a totally gripping thriller about a desperate mother with a troubled past in All the Dangerous Things. \nOne year ago\, Isabelle Drake’s life changed forever: her toddler son\, Mason\, was taken out of his crib in the middle of the night while she and her husband were asleep in the next room. With little evidence and few leads for the police to chase\, the case quickly went cold. However\, Isabelle cannot rest until Mason is returned to her–literally. \nExcept for the occasional catnap or small blackout where she loses track of time\, she hasn’t slept in a year. \nIsabelle’s entire existence now revolves around finding him\, but she knows she can’t go on this way forever. In hopes of jarring loose a new witness or buried clue\, she agrees to be interviewed by a true-crime podcaster–but his interest in Isabelle’s past makes her nervous. His incessant questioning paired with her severe insomnia has brought up uncomfortable memories from her own childhood\, making Isabelle start to doubt her recollection of the night of Mason’s disappearance\, as well as second-guess who she can trust… including herself. But she is determined to figure out the truth no matter where it leads.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Kasen Wysong’s New Release: The Paths of Time
DESCRIPTION:Meet Kasen Wysong and grab a signed copy of his new release\, The Paths of Time\, the second his Mayhem series (the first\, The Colors of the Mayhem\, was a Main Street Reads fantasy hit!\n \nThe Staff of the Paths of Time has been triggered. \nAncient magic takes a handful of Wielders four hundred years into the past\, to a yet unbroken Alasdair. Despite the vast land\, glistening architecture\, and sophisticated cultures–signs of turmoil show the Path to the Mayhem is shortening. \nEmpires ten times the size of the Unnamed Island are a breath away from war. Fervent groups like the Temple of Pure threaten Florica Wielders with their magic. The Nightfall Order grows bolder as they emerge from hiding. And there lurks an even greater threat in the shadows; the Tarantula spins her webs of chaos\, entangling the world in her scheme. \nThe Travelers of the Paths of Time must learn how to navigate this new time period. Their survival depends on it–humanity depends on it. They are the prophets of doom\, harkening the Mayhem\, but desperate to stop it. Unlikely alliances form\, old flames for vengeance rekindle\, and new heroes arise. Amid it all\, three friends from Floric Academy explore the depths of their own souls–fearing what they might find. \nKasen Wysong devoured fantasy novels and these unlocked new worlds for him. He completed his first book in middle school and fell in love with the process. Almost a decade later\, Kasen discovered that book on a flash drive and decided to publish it. He dove into the story\, reworking it\, adding new portions\, and eventually splitting it into two books. The first is the Colors of the Mayhem\, and this second addition to the Mayhem Series is The Paths of Time. In many ways\, the title is reflective of Kasen’s own journey to publishing it\, as the story is deeply connected to his past. A lot of Kasen’s inspiration comes from his unique upbringing in Kyiv\, Ukraine.  \n

SUMMARY:January Living Large Bookclub: Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
DESCRIPTION:Due to the horrible weather timing of last month’s club – this is now JANUARY’S pick – because we all can’t wait to talk about it! As always\, treats will be served – please come on out and join in the fun! \nThe remarkable\, incomparable Barbara Kingsolver is back – with her new novel\, Demon Copperhead\, and we can’t wait to talk about it! We’ll provide the treats\, you bring the conversation – and the book is at 10% off for book club price! \n“Kingsolver is a writer who can help us understand and navigate the chaos of these times.” —Minneapolis Star Tribune \nFrom the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior\, a brilliant novel which enthralls\, compels\, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity. \n“Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out\, win or lose.” \nDemon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It’s the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer\, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair\, a caustic wit\, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath\, relayed in his own unsparing voice\, he braves the modern perils of foster care\, child labor\, derelict schools\, athletic success\, addiction\, disastrous loves\, and crushing losses. Through all of it\, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities. \nMany generations ago\, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel\, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South\, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion\, and above all\, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys\, and all those born into beautiful\, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

SUMMARY:Thrill in the 'Ville: Thriller Book Club Reading The Resemblance
DESCRIPTION:Our first thriller book club choice of 2023 is  The Resemblance by Lauren Nossett. As always\, treats will be served – come join the fun! \nLauren Nossett’s artfully written debut\, The Resemblance is an exhilarating\, atmospheric campus thriller reminiscent of The Secret History and The Likeness. \nNever betray the brotherhood… On a chilly November morning at the University of Georgia\, a fraternity brother steps off a busy crosswalk and is struck dead by an oncoming car. More than a dozen witnesses all agree on two things: the driver looked identical to the victim\, and he was smiling. \nDetective Marlitt Kaplan is first on the scene. An Athens native and the daughter of a UGA professor\, she knows all its shameful histories\, from the skull discovered under the foundations of Baldwin Hall to the hushed-up murder-suicide in Waddel. But in the course of investigating this hit-and-run\, she will uncover more chilling secrets as she explores the sprawling\, interconnected Greek system that entertains and delights the university’s most elite and connected students. \nThe lines between Marlitt’s police work and her own past increasingly blur as Marlitt seeks to bring to justice an institution that took something precious from her many years ago. When threats against her escalate\, and some long-buried secrets threaten to come to the surface\, she can’t help questioning whether the corruption in Athens has run off campus and into the force and how far these brotherhoods will go to protect their own.

SUMMARY:November Living Large Bookclub: Hester by Laurie Lico Albanese
DESCRIPTION:We’re looking forward to chatting about Hester this month! Open to all and treats will be served. Grab Hester at our 10% off book club price! NOTE: See below for downloadable discussion guide! \nNamed a Most Anticipated Book for Fall by Goodreads – Washington Post – New York Post – Buzzfeed – PopSugar – Business Insider – An October Indie Next List Pick – An October LibraryReads Pick \nA hauntingly beautiful–and imagined–origin story to The Scarlet Letter. —People \nWHO IS THE REAL HESTER PRYNNE? \nIsobel Gamble is a young seamstress carrying generations of secrets when she sets sail from Scotland in the early 1800s with her husband\, Edward. An apothecary who has fallen under the spell of opium\, his pile of debts have forced them to flee Glasgow for a fresh start in the New World. But only days after they’ve arrived in Salem\, Edward abruptly joins a departing ship as a medic–leaving Isobel penniless and alone in a strange country\, forced to make her way by any means possible. \nWhen she meets a young Nathaniel Hawthorne\, the two are instantly drawn to each other: he is a man haunted by his ancestors\, who sent innocent women to the gallows–while she is an unusually gifted needleworker\, troubled by her own strange talents. As the weeks pass and Edward’s safe return grows increasingly unlikely\, Nathaniel and Isobel grow closer and closer. Together\, they are a muse and a dark storyteller; the enchanter and the enchanted. But which is which? \nIn this sensuous and hypnotizing tale\, a young immigrant woman grapples with our country’s complicated past\, and learns that America’s ideas of freedom and liberty often fall short of their promise. Interwoven with Isobel and Nathaniel’s story is a vivid interrogation of who gets to be a real American in the first half of the 19th century\, a depiction of the early days of the Underground Railroad in New England\, and atmospheric interstitials that capture the long history of unusual women being accused of witchcraft. Meticulously researched yet evocatively imagined\, Laurie Lico Albanese’s Hester is a timeless tale of art\, ambition\, and desire that examines the roots of female creative power and the men who try to shut it down. \nCLICK ON THE IMAGE BELOW TO DOWNLOAD THE FREE DISCUSSION GUIDE

SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Judi Lauren - Jordie & Joey Fell From the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Twin brothers Jordie and Joey have never met their parents. Maybe it’s because they aren’t from this planet? \nWhen another kid at school tried to force Jordie to show him the “crop circles” on his back that prove he’s an alien\, it was Joey who took the kid to the ground. And when the twins got kicked out of their foster home because Joey kissed the other boy who lived there\, it was Jordie who told him everything would be okay. And as long as Jordie and Joey are together\, it will be. But when the principal calls their current foster mother about a fight at school\, the boys know she’ll be done with them. And\, from spying in their file\, they also know they’re going to be separated. \nDetermined to face the world side by side rather than without one another\, Jordie and Joey set off to find their birth parents. From Arizona to Roswell to Area 51 in the Nevada desert\, the twins begin a search for where they truly belong. But Jordie’s about to discover that family isn’t always about the ones who bring you into the world\, but the ones who help you survive it. \n\nJudi Lauren has been reading since she could first hold a book. Following her passion for working with words\, she began writing books for kids and teens about family\, friendship\, and surviving impossible things. When not writing\, she spends time editing for Radish Fiction and thinking about her dream job: working in a tiny bookshop in a rainy city.

SUMMARY:"Living Large" Book Club: The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to all\, our Living Large book club is for those great books we ALL should be reading. You’ll love this one! \nNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER – REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK – “Delightful . . . [a] captivating and slyly subversive fictional paean to the real women whose work on the Oxford English Dictionary went largely unheralded.”–The New York Times Book Review \n“A marvelous fiction about the power of language to elevate or repress.”–Geraldine Brooks\, New York Times bestselling author of People of the Book \nEsme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious\, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium\, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table\, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and\, learning that the word means “slave girl\,” begins to collect other words that have been discarded or neglected by the dictionary men. \nAs she grows up\, Esme realizes that words and meanings relating to women’s and common folks’ experiences often go unrecorded. And so she begins in earnest to search out words for her own dictionary: the Dictionary of Lost Words. To do so she must leave the sheltered world of the university and venture out to meet the people whose words will fill those pages. \nSet during the height of the women’s suffrage movement and with the Great War looming\, The Dictionary of Lost Words reveals a lost narrative\, hidden between the lines of a history written by men. Inspired by actual events\, author Pip Williams has delved into the archives of the Oxford English Dictionary to tell this highly original story. The Dictionary of Lost Words is a delightful\, lyrical\, and deeply thought-provoking celebration of words and the power of language to shape the world.

What happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains a mystery\, but the women who descended from Eleanor Dare have long known the truth lies in what she left behind: a message carved onto a large stone and the contents of her treasured Commonplace Book. Brought from England on Eleanor’s fateful voyage to the New World\, her book was passed down through the fifteen generations of daughters who followed as they came of age. Thirteen-year-old Alice had been next in line to receive it\, but her mother’s tragic death fractured the unbroken legacy and the Dare Stone and the shadowy history recorded in the book faded into memory. Or so Alice hoped. \nIn the waning days of World War Two\, Alice is a young widow and a mother herself when she is unexpectedly presented with her birthright: the deed to Evertell\, her abandoned family home and the history she thought forgotten. Determined to sell the property and step into a future free of the past\, Alice returns to Savannah with her own thirteen-year-old daughter\, Penn\, in tow. But when Penn’s curiosity over the lineage she never knew begins to unveil secrets from beneath every stone and bone and shell of the old house and Eleanor’s book is finally found\, Alice is forced to reckon with the sacrifices made for love and the realities of their true inheritance as daughters of Eleanor Dare. \nIn this sweeping tale from award-winning author Kimberly Brock\, the answers to a real-life mystery may be found in the pages of a story that was always waiting to be written. \n“Some things in this world are meant to burn …” The summer of 1956\, a brood of cicadas descends upon Providence Georgia\, a natural event with supernatural repercussions\, unhinging the life of Analeise Newell\, an eleven-year-old piano prodigy. Amidst this emergence\, dark obsessions are stirred\, uncanny gifts provoked\, and secrets unearthed. \nDuring a visit to Mistletoe\, a plantation owned by the wealthy Mayfield family\, Analeise encounters Cordelia Mayfield and her daughter Marlissa\, both of whom possess an otherworldly beauty.  A whisper and an act of violence perpetrated during this visit by Mrs. Mayfield all converge to kindle Analeise’s fascination with the Mayfields. \nAnaleise’s burgeoning obsession with the Mayfield family overshadows her own seemingly\, ordinary life\, culminating in dangerous games and manipulation\, setting off a chain of cataclysmic events with life-altering consequences—all of it unfolding to the maddening whir of a cicada song. \nA novel of courageous parental love and the instructive\, healing bonds that form between humans and animals. Set in early 1950s rural South Carolina\, One Good Mama Bone chronicles Sarah Creamer’s quest to find her mama bone\, after she is left to care for a boy who is not her own but instead is the product of an affair between her husband and her best friend and neighbor\, a woman she calls Sister. When her husband drinks himself to death\, Sarah\, a dirt-poor homemaker with no family to rely on and the note on the farm long past due\, must find a way for her and young Emerson Bridge to survive. But the more daunting obstacle is Sarah’s fear that her mother’s words\, seared in her memory since she first heard them at the age of six\, were a prophesy\, You ain’t got you one good mama bone in you\, girl. \nWhen Sarah reads in the local newspaper that a boy won $680 with his Grand Champion steer at the recent 1951 Fat Cattle Show & Sale\, she sees this as their financial salvation and finds a way to get Emerson Bridge a steer from a local farmer to compete in the 1952 show. But the young calf is unsettled at Sarah’s farm\, crying out in distress and growing louder as the night wears on. Some four miles away\, the steer’s mother hears his cries and breaks out of a barbed-wire fence to go in search of him. The next morning Sarah finds the young steer quiet\, content\, and nursing a large cow. Inspired by the mother cow’s act of love\, Sarah names her Mama Red. And so Sarah’s education in motherhood begins with Mama Red as her teacher. \nBut Luther Dobbins\, the man who sold Sarah the steer\, has his sights set on winning too\, and\, like Sarah\, he is desperate\, but not for money. Dobbins is desperate for glory\, wanting to regain his lost grand-champion dynasty\, and he will stop at nothing to win. Emboldened by her lessons from Mama Red and her budding mama bone\, Sarah is committed to victory even after she learns the winning steer’s ultimate fate. Will she stop at nothing\, even if it means betraying her teacher? \nA wildly inventive novel that stretches the boundaries of what it costs to love and be loved. Sixteen-year-old Gradle Bird has lived her entire life with her Grandpa\, Leonard\, at a seedy motel and truck stop off Georgia’s I-16. But when Leonard moves her to a crumbling old house rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Ms. Annalee Spivey\, Gradle is plunged into a lush\, magical world much stranger and more dangerous than from the one she came.     \nHere she meets Sonny Joe Stitch\, a Siamese fighting fish connoisseur overdosed on testosterone\, a crippled\, Bible-thumping hobo named Ceif “Tadpole” Walker\, and the only true friend she will ever know\, a schizophrenic genius\, music-man\, and professional dumpster-diver\, D-5 Delvis Miles. As Gradle falls deeper into Delvis’s imaginary and fantastical world\, unsettling dangers lurk\, and when surfaced Gradle discovers unforeseen depths in herself and the people she loves the most.     \nGradle Bird is an unusual tale of self-discovery and redemption that explores the infirmities of fatherly love\, the complexities of human cruelty\, and the consequences of guilt\, proving they are possible to overcome no matter how dark and horrible the cause.
