SUMMARY:Fab Fantasy Club: VE Schwab's Fragile Threads of Power!
DESCRIPTION:YES\, we still have some signed copies available – come grab yours and then join us on book club night for fun discussion and free treats – open to all! \n\n\n\nV. E. Schwab\, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue\, opens another door to a new fantasy series set in the dazzling world of Shades of Magic. Prepare for tangled schemes and perilous adventures with friends old and new in The Fragile Threads of Power. \n\n\n\nOnce\, there were four worlds\, nestled like pages in a book\, each pulsing with fantastical power and connected by a single city: London. Until the magic grew too fast and forced the worlds to seal the doors between them in a desperate gamble to protect their own. The few magicians who could still open the doors grew more rare as time passed and now\, only three Antari are known in recent memory–Kell Maresh of Red London\, Delilah Bard of Grey London\, and Holland Vosijk\, of White London. \n\n\n\nBut barely a glimpse of them have been seen in the last seven years–and a new Antari named Kosika has appeared in White London\, taking the throne in Holland’s absence. The young queen is willing to feed her city with blood\, including her own–but her growing religious fervor has the potential to drown it instead. And back in Red London\, King Rhy Maresh is threatened by a rising rebellion\, one determined to correct the balance of power by razing the throne entirely. \n\n\n\nThese two royals from very different empires now face very similar struggles: how to keep their crowns–and their own heads. Amidst this tapestry of old friends and new enemies\, a girl with an unusual magical ability comes into possession of a device that could change the fate of all four worlds. Her name is Tes\, and she’s the only one who can bring them together–or unravel it all.

SUMMARY:Honoring Veteran's Day: Book Signing with Award-Winning Military Historian James M. Scott
DESCRIPTION:As we honor our military heroes on Veteran’s Day\, we’re sharing a special signing with you (and perfect gift options before the holidays!) Brilliant author James M. Scott will be at Main Street Reads from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, signing his most recent (and many say best) book\, Black Snow: \n\n\n\nSeven minutes past midnight on March 10\, 1945\, nearly 300 American B-29s thundered into the skies over Tokyo. Their payloads of incendiaries ignited a firestorm that reached up to 2\,800 degrees\, liquefying asphalt and vaporizing thousands; sixteen square miles of the city were flattened and more than 100\,000 men\, women\, and children were killed. \n\n\n\nBlack Snow is the story of this devastating operation\, orchestrated by Major General Curtis LeMay\, who famously remarked: “If we lose the war\, we’ll be tried as war criminals.” James M. Scott reconstructs in granular detail that horrific night\, and describes the development of the B-29\, the capture of the Marianas for use as airfields\, and the change in strategy from high-altitude daylight “precision” bombing to low-altitude nighttime incendiary bombing. Most importantly\, the raid represented a significant moral shift for America\, marking the first time commanders deliberately targeted civilians which helped pave the way for the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki five months later. \n\n\n\nDrawing on first-person interviews with American pilots and bombardiers and Japanese survivors\, air force archives\, and oral histories never before published in English\, Scott delivers a harrowing and gripping account\, and his most important and compelling work to date. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA former Nieman Fellow at Harvard\, James M. Scott is the author of Rampage\, which was named one of the Best Books of 2018 by the editors at Kirkus and Military Times and was chosen as a finalist for the prestigious Gilder Lehrman Prize for Military History by the New York Historical Society. \n\n\n\nHis other works include Target Tokyo\, a 2016 Pulitzer Prize finalist; The War Below\, and The Attack on the Liberty\, which won the Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Scott lives with his wife and two children in Mt. Pleasant\, SC.

SUMMARY:Meet the Author! Steve Lazarus Signing Call Me Sonny
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special thriller book signing with Steve Lazarus\, debut of the new thriller\, Call Me Sonny. \n\n\n\nAbout the Book\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShortly after a corrupt attorney pays a visit to an inmate in a maximum security federal prison\, people from the inmate’s past start dying.  Bryce Chandler\, a retired FBI agent eking out a living as a private investigator in the Florida Keys\, ties the string of killings to a shadowy murder-for-hire ring operating on the Dark Web.  As Bryce digs further into the murders\, he discovers the final name on the hit list is his own. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, a simple divorce case turns out to be much more than meets the eye\, as Bryce’s investigation of the defendant leads him down a path of international drug smuggling\, money laundering\, and violent henchmen bent on keeping him silent.  The two storylines run parallel to one another until they eventually converge in a final\, bloody outcome.  \n\n\n\n\n“Bryce Chandler is a compelling addition to the pantheon of hard-boiled fictional detectives. Lazarus puts his experience as an FBI agent to good use in Call Me Sonny\, and the book feels more realistic than most detective novels. Impossible to put down!” \n—Joe Weisberg\, Emmy Award-winning writer and creator of The Americans\n\n\n\nSteve’s debut novel was inspired by one of his real-life cases. After arresting a subject who threatened to unleash a bioterror attack on the Atlanta subway system\, Steve and his partner found themselves on the receiving end of a death threat from the soon-to-be convicted felon. And though that subject would spend the next 25 years in prison\, Steve couldn’t help but wonder…what if he could make good on his threat\, even from behind bars? The most logical solution would be if he hired a hit man\, and…voila! A novel was born. Written over the course of a year in Abu Dhabi\, the Florida Keys\, and Texas hill country\, “Call Me Sonny” was a labor of love incorporating the personalities\, anecdotes\, and experiences of Steve’s multi-faceted FBI career\, and if things work out as planned\, it will be the first in a series of Bryce Chandler crime thrillers. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Author\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSteve Lazarus is a first-time author\, retired FBI Special Agent\, and United States Air Force veteran.  He served twenty-two years in the FBI\, spending the first half of his career investigating drug trafficking organizations and violent street gangs.  Later\, he became a full-time bomb technician\, an assignment which led him to Iraq\, Kuwait and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terror.  After retiring from the Bureau\, he spent several years as a national security contractor in Abu Dhabi\, United Arab Emirates. Steve lives on the South Carolina coast with his wife Susan and their amazing wonder dog\, Aspen.

SUMMARY:Book Signing: Reading Jane with Susannah Kennedy!
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to be a part of this eastern leg of Susannah’s tour – come join in the fun and enjoy refreshments and some stimulating conversation. The book will be available to be signed by the author that day! \n\n\n\nReading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir and the book tour “Surviving the Narcissistic Mother” \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs the estimation of narcissism and its impact on children grows\, more people are identifying as the children of such an upbringing. They have been raised by a parent whose sense of self-importance overshadowed the child\, the child existing rather as an extension of a parental self that lacks empathy and often exploits their child. It’s estimated that nearly 60 million people are damaged by such relational patterns. Children of such parents are vulnerable to poor self-esteem\, lack of boundaries\, and co-dependence. \n\n\n\nHaving emerged on the other side of this phenomenon\, Susannah Kennedy\, author of Reading Jane: A Daughter’s Memoir has launched her book tour along the East Coast. The tour includes a stop at Main Street Reads in Summerville!\, where she’ll sign copies as well as address her path to healing. It wasn’t an easy one\, and might not have been achieved at all had Susannah’s mother not inexplicably taken her own life at age 75. When Susannah discovered 45 years of Jane’s diaries\, she had a portal into the narrative her mother created and lived. \n\n\n\nSusannah avoided plunging in for three years\, until she was driven to do so\, to understand finally the mystery her mother presented. What emerges is Susannah’s own story in contrast to her mother’s\, and ultimately leads her to finally shake off the constraints set by Jane’s need to control both the narrative and her daughter. \n\n\n\nPrevious events on the West Coast leg of the tour have demonstrated that Susannah is not alone. Nearly 5 percent or 1 in 200 people suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and the sons and daughters are showing up at book events — to take from Susannah’s story of healing the hope they might finally understand and heal their own. \n\n\n\nThe Reading Jane: Surviving the Narcissistic Mother Eastern Seaboard Tour will encompass 12 cities in October and November 2023: Boston and Gloucester\, Massachusetts; Newport\, Rhode Island; Owego and Woodstock\, New York; Washington D.C.; Montrose and Philadelphia\, Pennsylvania; Charlotte\, North Carolina; Hilton Head Island and Summerville\, South Carolina; and Savannah\, Georgia. For details on dates\, times\, and locations\, please visit www.sibyllinepress.com or www.susannahkennedy.com. Main Street Reads at 115 S. Main Street in Summerville will host Susannah on November 19th from 1-3 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the author: Berkeley and Oxford-educated anthropologist Susannah Kennedy was born in India and raised in the United States. Later\, she traveled extensively on her own\, first in Italy\, and then through the Middle East and India\, settling for two years in Egypt before becoming a reporter in Dallas\, Texas. At Oxford University\, she specialized in Arab culture and politics\, receiving her DPhil in social anthropology. She and her psychoanalyst husband lived and worked in Germany\, raising three children in a thatched-roof farmhouse in the countryside outside Hamburg. Her mother’s suicide and its aftermath brought them back to California in 2017. They now reside in Marin County.

SUMMARY:Bestsellers Book Club: The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman - WED This Month!
DESCRIPTION:This month\, because of Tuesday’s tree lighting and festivities in the square\, the Living Large Bookclub has decided to meet on Wednesday\, one day later\, November 29th. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be chatting about the newest hit by Alice Hoffman\, The Invisible Hour. As always\, book clubs are free and open to all\, and the book is eligible for the 10% book club discount. Refreshments will be served\, come join the fun! \n\n\n\nFrom the beloved New York Times bestselling author of The Marriage of Opposites and the Practical Magic series comes an enchanting novel about love\, heartbreak\, self-discovery\, and the enduring magic of books. \n\n\n\nOne brilliant June day when Mia Jacob can no longer see a way to survive\, the power of words saves her. The Scarlet Letter was written almost two hundred years earlier\, but it seems to tell the story of Mia’s mother\, Ivy\, and their life inside the Community–an oppressive cult in western Massachusetts where contact with the outside world is forbidden\, and books are considered evil. But how could this be? How could Nathaniel Hawthorne have so perfectly captured the pain and loss that Mia carries inside her? \n\n\n\nThrough a journey of heartbreak\, love\, and time\, Mia must abandon the rules she was raised with at the Community. As she does\, she realizes that reading can transport you to other worlds or bring them to you\, and that readers and writers affect one another in mysterious ways. She learns that time is more fluid than she can imagine\, and that love is stronger than any chains that bind you. As a girl Mia fell in love with a book. Now as a young woman she falls in love with a brilliant writer as she makes her way back in time. \n\n\n\nBut what if Nathaniel Hawthorne never wrote The Scarlet Letter? And what if Mia Jacob never found it on the day she planned to die? Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote: “A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities.” This is the story of one woman’s dream. For a little while it came true…
